Nene Valley Railway Winter Steam Gala 2013 + Derailed Britannia at Yarwell

- I went down to the Steam Gala Saturday and Sunday and managed to get some shots of Britannia before the unfortunate derailment, so when I found out I left Station Road and went down to Yarwell junction where you see the engineers trying to re-rail the loco.
The Locos in action were;

A large group of senior citizens 60+ filled with decades of knowledge, all helping to rerail another senior citizen, Brittania, 62 years old.
Wonderful. Respect gentlemen. Respect.
Love these engines , the steam and puff and the sound ! Great invention that changed and shaped in many ways , the world.
This is amazing Ashley! 50 years ago, I used to travel from Liverpool St to Harwich on the Hook Continental. That was when they used to load the cars on by crane! After a usually dreadfully rough North Sea crossing on the SS Avalon, I boarded the Rheingold in Hoek van Holland...a super modern electric Trans European Express with air con and tinted windows, all the way to Munich. So good to see Britannia with that head plate. Thank you so much for this.

collect the train numbers when I was a young lad of about 10-13yr old I am now

In the US, in both the steam and diesel eras, most freight locomotives have carried a pair of rerailing frogs, which are cast ramps with raised edges, that can usually resolve a minor derailment by guiding the wheels back onto the track. They are a formalized version of the attempt to wedge dunnage under 70000's wheels. They would have handled this single axle derailment easily. Search "rerailing frog" on google. Since it was at a switch near the points, the frogs would probably have been placed behind the derailed axle.
Of course, in the past, they were needed, since the US probably had more minor derailments than the UK, due to casual track maintenance and spikes into ties.
You wouldn't stop playing with it, and now look what you've done! :D
I'm still trying to get my head around how only 1 wheel derailed? Must have been very stressful for all the volunteers for the Gala.
I just pick my locos up and put them back on the track!

Typing this two years later, I completely lost interest int eh hobby because of the spending and just generally lost interest in model trains
Gosh! well, back in the 1970's I was a member of Nene Valley Railway when it was based at the sugar beet factory. I even got to drive one of the loco's up and down the short track at one of the open days. I think they only had the two loco's then, and I'm not sure if was called the NVR back then.

I think the derailment was a 1 off, as the points what Britannia was crossing are very tight, (bearing in mind other large locos have used them with no problem) and just by bad luck that the wheel just slipped down the inside as the loco turned, I don't think there was anything wrong with the track, its just a case of the loco being the very largest the points will take with a 50/50 chance of derailing, but I think Britannia did cross the points earlier the same day with no problem

Hi I’m neal willis I happened to be in the signal box day of brittania coming off i never did know why come off I would think would have been investigated never did heard if any reason derailment was it just bad luck or what any report came out was 8 years ago

There seems to be a lot of derailed locos on Nene Valley Railway. Is their p-way crew in need of training? A week on Keighley civs would soon sort them out.

Some wood packing be better for re railing and pack well forward of direction

And they changed their name from Nene Valley Steam Railway to Nene Valley Railway because they found it more profitable to run their 'specials' with a shitty diesel shunter instead of a steam loco.

(Part 2) The whistling I would imagine is just air being sucked in and blow out of the cylinders.For moving Britannia the cylinders mechanical lubrication would still be working even when cold,

Thanks for your comment, firstly I would like to point out that my camera does not have a manual focus, I'm only using a small advanced compact, it's a great camera for 1080i film (I only saved this in 720p). The cause of derailment, maybe it was just unfortunate as the points are a little tight. I would have stayed longer but the engineers couldn't do it then, they had to go back to the office and work out how to, it was completed at 2AM (I think).

I love the English locos, but can't stand the little toot-toot whistles. Glad American steam locos have a more fitting whistle for a 100+ ton beast.
I am completely the other way. It wouldn't be so bad if they Americans did not have to keep on and on and on blowing the things! I can never hear the actual locomotive on the US vids.
No offence to America in any way, but as 948Francis said the American ones are way to loud and long.

Julian Begg That's correct--when monster locos and mile long trains are on the move accross vast area's like prairys
, it kinda takes a bit longer for them to stop--especially when there's an obstruction on the tracks--animal or human. Therefore, it follows that plenty of warning of it's arrival is paramount, with long bursts of very loud whistles/chimes. This takes a hell of a lot of steam, and big locos can afford it--smaller British ones cannot, so they use very piercing short toot's. especially the work-horse shunter's and 'tanker's.

It's really hard to believe that a small Sentinel can shunt Britannia.
Britannia's gotta weight like, two-three hundred tons, right?
Something like 110 tons including tender, with a full coal and water load...possibly less.
LOVE those HUGE driving wheels! They look to be 6 feet in diameter!!
