- "I'm that lucky guy who found his hobby and was able to turn it into a job."
William Dalrymple is a multi-award winning and bestselling historian. Growing up on the Dalrymple family estate in North Berwick, with an almost Edwardian childhood, William was sent off to Ampleforth College at just eight years old. It was there that his passion for history grew and he spent his free time on archaeological digs and getting lost in history books.
William has gone on to turn that childhood fascination into an incredible career. He has written numerous bestselling books including White Mughals and The Last Mughals. His latest book The Golden Road is out now..

The empire podcast is an absolute historical delight.
Love William Dalrymple. My favourite author. He's brought such an extra depth of understanding to my travels in India.
My main concern is how to survive all of these financial and political crisis, especially in light of the US political power scuffle. The government has really called things more difficult for its citizens, and we can't sit back and bear all the consequences of the bad governance
I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than $21k passively by just going into crypto investment , and I don't have to do much work. Inflation or no inflation, my finances remain secure. So I really don't blame people who panic
How
..? Am a newbie in crypto investment, please can you guide me through on how you made profit?
Thanks to Mrs Ksenia Alice
She's a licensed broker here in the states
I'm surprised you mentioned and recommended Ksenia Alice. I came across the testimony of one of her clients on CNBC news last week.
Eating a masala omelette while watching this. Great fun! I'm Indian, 10 years older than WD and grew up in London. We were taught no Indian history at all at school. We DID learn about Empress Matilda's escape from prison... which couldn't be more irrelevant, and the "other" Anarchy, the feud between her and King Stephen..... I read Dalrymple's books to help fill in the huge gaps in my understanding of the country where I was actually born. Given the huge elephant in the room-the former British Empire, this needs to be better addressed in school.
Fantastic author. I read City of Djinns as a young undergrad at Edinburgh in the early 90s and have been hooked on everything he writes since then. Great interview.
He seems such a likable person.
I prefer james obrien in this context, as opposed to talking over guests and browbeating them, even if he is usually correct to do so. Excellent interview
William dalrymple is one of fhe greatest in modern times. Dude is a walking encyclopaedia. Golden road and anarchy are absolute gems
Your channel is a source of wonder and inspiration. Thank you for your creativity and diligence!⛵️😺🥤
Everyone should read William Dalrymple.
Fascinating man and James is a wonderful interviewer.
Loved this Conversation
Thsts a bit of an insult! To India! The Greeks learnt a lot from India.
Like what?
And so did the Rest of the World.
Thanks to Dalrymple the
Wonder and Glory that was India is now known to the World. Science Mathematics the Arts and Music and Argriculture and Cuisine and Theatre.
Okay?
But what specifically did the Indian teach Ancient Greek?
@petervinberg6823 - maths, philosophy, agriculture and civility.
Chess...and the Art of War , although these days we are a Nation of Peace.
The Ancient Greeks and Persians tried to invade India many times and failed. The great Religious epics Mahabharatha and Ramyana were probably source material for much of greek theatre, and everybody should know that from India the symbol 0 appeared and changed the course of maths and Astronomy for ever. Its even said that some of stories in the great religious epics formed the source of the Old Testament.
So like LBC and this show with James O'Brian. ❤
A superb interview thank you
Stephen Runciman!! Obscure now but will always be on someone's lips as you really shoukd read book N by Runciman, so well written from impeccable sources.
what exactly is bizarre about that childhood?
it was a long time ago. Anyone can say that.....
So boiling lobsters is ok but boiling humans is not?
I think it's left up to interuptation
Yes and then came the British and completely devastated India leaving legacy of poverty, economic inequality, and human rights violations.
Are you kidding? Bald and Bankrupt has just done a vlog there and India let all the great stuff the British left turn to dust.
@@jimwest7107 Oh Tucker Carlson entering the comments section
@@jimwest7107yea I can’t believe those Indians left all those great British things like famine
Common law and the biggest Parliamentary State on the planet. The EU could learn something.
@@aleph8888 well, I guess stealing Indian wealth and resources while starving millions to death was well worth it, right? At least they have a parliamentary system to show for it
INDIA WAS NAMED AFTER THE RIVER INDUS WHICH IS IN PAKISTAN 😊😊
