So awesome to see you get to XG finally. I was the one that brought them to Champ, so it's nice to see he's into them enough to pass them on. I really think you will love them. Even the non-rap songs that they do. I'm willing to bet that you'll love the old-school hip-hop/r&b vibe that they have.
I love that the lead singer for kokeshi has a kokeshi doll haircut. Without telling us, it was easy to figure out Alan picked DEVILOOF and Champ picked XG.
From rock to hip'hop, Japanese women are killing it right now! XG's mini-album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard chart. Cocona (1st rapper) was just 16 years old at the time of filming!
Great songs this week!, Kokeshi is just so good, they sound very different from most of the other bands coming out of Japan right now. Love her legit screams!
Great picks! Not sure if u have heard of maki oyama, just discovered her a days ago. Would glad if you have a listen to her tracks though, a release an album recently & the album is addictive.
The beginning of Kokeshi reminds me of the black metal bands I used to listen to a lot, especially the riffs during the blast beat part and the way the blast beats were played. They are apparently a blackgaze band (black metal + shoegaze) so that makes sense. It's not a subgenre I ever dove into and not everything I heard is necessarily for me (I am typically not a huge fan of breakdowns), but I am certainly subscribing and checking out more since this also had a doom metal vibe, which is an other genre I have listened to a lot over the years. I honestly think people that are fine with the blasty parts of Kokeshi will enjoy pure black metal bands as well (you can check out Sigh for a very unorthodox progressive/avant-garde Japanese black metal band). One of the reasons I started listening to Japanese rock and metal bands is because I had been listening to Western metal for 20 years and I noticed that I was listening to the same bands and genres over and over and the change of pace was fantastic. But I think something like this is a good changeup since I am nowadays mostly listening to Japanese hard rock/math rock/indie rock with some exceptions and this certainly sounded like a good way to have some variety.
Ok, Deviloof is cool but not really my vibe, HOWEVER 1. XG! They are killer!! will definitely be checking them out 2.KOKESHI! Damnnnnnn!! sounds even better hearing second time around..the vocalist's low growls rival freakin Lorna Shore dude!! gotta have more! and 3. FAMI!!
