How to DETHATCH YOUR LAWN with a MOWER. DETHATCHING UNIVERSAL MOWER BLADE.

  • A Dethatching mower blade. Bad idea? maybe…. I purchased a Dethatching mower blade from Oregon blades to “give it a spin’ and see what happens. This is something that I've never used before and I have always wanted to. They tend to get lackluster reviews due to the damage that they cause to growing grass. Fortunately today, we are out on a lawn that is still 90% dormant.
    Here's what I can tell you, it is super aggressive. I would not recommend this on anything that was not fully dormant. It absolutely does more than a standard homeowner style D Thatcher like a SuJoe scarifier. The little wire spring loaded flails are five times thicker than on the electric SunJoe dethacher.
    Here's what this means for you: it will rip and tear and shred and pour dead and live grass blades up. If you actually had a bad fat problem this would tear into it for sure. Because the height is set by your mowers wheels, it will dig all the way down into the dirt. I don't ever recommend this heavy of a mechanical intervention, and honestly this was way more of just a curiosity.
    I could see how you could actually have some pretty good luck with this thing cleaning up dead matter from a dormant lawn and I imagine that the grass underneath is going to come in super strong because of it.
    If you want one…. Here it is

    I've used these for years and they actually do a pretty good job. What I have always done once you put that blade on is to put the mower on level concrete and lower it down to a point where you can just begin to hear the tongs scrape as you roll the mower back and forth (not running) and that sets the blade at a perfect height.

      @caseysanguins9490 2 года назад +15

      That is exactly what I do and have done for years. Sketch as all get out, but put the thatch blade above your normal blade in an "X" and you get even better results and it sucks up much of the debris into the bag. Just make sure the mower is always moving or you get nice little rings in your lawn.

    • @augenmaugen
      @augenmaugen 2 года назад

      @@caseysanguins9490 sorry just making sure I understand, do you mean put the dethatching blade on last (perpendicular to usual blade) so it’s closest to the lawn surface? Thanks.

    • @caseysanguins9490
      @caseysanguins9490 2 года назад +5

      @@augenmaugen above or below, depending on mower type and what centers the blades. You obviously want them securely attached, but yes, one on top of the other and then set your deck height accordingly. I run two normal blades, perpendicular, at all times.

      What???? The dethatching blade is installed IN PLACE OF the regular blade. Don't put two blades on at the same time; no manufacturer would ever recommend that, to my knowledge. Set the tips of the metal fingers a little high, because you can always lower the mower if you're not happy with the results. Too low and you will scalp the lawn badly, ripping out the living plants. Ask me how I know!!!@@caseysanguins9490

    I use one. I love it. I will say I use it on a lower level where it just touches the soil. Probably close to where you first used it. It makes the lawn look like a mess, and I'm sure my neighbors are wondering what the heck I'm doing. It really works great, and I would not even consider getting a dethacher. I had a lot of moss this year. So helpful for pulling that up. For overseeding it is a must. Really helps with opening up your lawn and getting that soil contact.

    I’ve used one for quite a few years, I lower the front end of the mower, that way when turning or stopping for a bit of time, you push down on the handle to lift the front end up, that way the springs don’t mutilate your grass. I’ve had luck with this way of doing it.

  • @stephenkidd1012

    Bit of a different situation with me since it's already June and the grass is well grown and already cut several times. I've been studying up on tools to scrape up creeping Charlie and thatch so I can overseed. This works to a degree but doesn't get the Charlie to the roots. Simple raking does. What I notice is that the dethatching blade cuts the grass very close. That's not good to keep the grass strong and able to resist weeds. So I'll wait till early next spring or the fall to use this. I've owned one of these for years but the first time I used it I wrecked a spot of the grass where I used it. Had it set too low I guess so I showed away from using it ever since. Encouraged by your video and having just given it another try, I'll use it fall or spring. Thanks!

    • @Troy-Echo
      @Troy-Echo 2 года назад

      Overseeding sucks in my opinion...that's why I prefer grass types that spread via stolons or rhizomes, or both as my Zoysia does. Kill the weeds with post-emergents, then keep them at bay with pre-emergents, and the lawn just fills in itself. When you overseed, you have to stop your pre-emergent application and that opens up the lawn to a new batch of weeds while you're putting down new seed. to cover the spots where weeds died, or grass died from age or fungus/disease.

    We had one of those blades when I was a kid,about 50 years ago. Had the steel tines with the little springs at the ends of the blade. Chewed the shit out of the grass unless you kept moving constantly. I now have a 20" Stihl battery mower. I saw a version of this blade with plastic tines that I would like to try,which people say works great in their product reviews. Also,I am just trying to avoid hours of raking,so this should great to get the overwinter crap loosened so I can collect it easier.

    I'm so glad you did this with the timing you did. I just got my dethatching blade yesterday, and my lawn was just lain sod last year in a very clay-heavy environment here in southern CO. There's just no way the lawn is going to spring back without cleaning up the mess of dead stuff (my lawn looks very similar to the one in this video), and I cannot justify either the space or the investment a dedicated dethatcher would take up.

    On giant lawns, that have had the same stripes mowed for a couple summers, the wheel tracks are lower than the blade path. The ruts lead to green wheel tracks, and scalped middle and sides of stripe look. Lawns kepts short stay dry, and bugs that eat dead grass wont thrive.

    Interesting! I've had a thatching blade sitting on my shelf for abut two years, used it yesterday on Bermudagrass (central Alabama, coming out of dormancy, very durable). It was hella aggressive, but when I "vacuumed" the yard afterwards, the grass was not destroyed and I filled up appx. 1/2 of a 55 gallon drum liner.
    There's still _plenty_ of thatch in the lawn. I guess I'll do it a couple more times, after I give the grass a few weeks' recovery time to see whether it did any good or not.

    The tines on that blade look to be similar in thickness to my tow-behind dethatcher. The tines on mine are much longer and have some give with the springs. For pulling up some debris with a large area, I use the tow-behind dethatcher and then go over it with the lawn sweeper to clean up.

Battery, power cord or spark plug/plugs. Do not want a severe accident and injury happening to you. It's easy to overlook but is very dangerous due to an unexpected start. Not trying to be a nagging voice but just don't want you to get seriously hurt. Just some precautions from a lawn care guy. Expect the unexpected.

      Bermuda shouldn’t be dethatched. No need if you cut it property and scalp it in the spring. Bag the clippings when you scalp and you’re good.

    Don't buy this if you run Honda mower with blade brake, as it doesn't clear the brake guard and cannot rotate. Also mine was missing washers.

    Hey Dude, Why not try to be a little more informative instead of trying to audition for the next "kick ass" B movie. Show the blad up close so we can see how it's supposed to work before trying it out for instance. Anybody can push a lawn mower. Show the difference between the two types of blades and how they work. Thanks

    You did not show a close up before and after of the results so thumbs down.
