  • Richard McVeigh plays Healey Willan's 'Introduction, Passacaglia and Fugue in E flat minor Op. 149' on the organ of Truro Cathedral, performed during a live organ recital on 30th June 2023.
This is my favourite organ piece! It's often known as the IPF (it's less of a mouth full, right?) and was written in 1916 - just 3 years after moving to Toronto (Canada) from London (UK).
This piece definitely works with the help of a generous acoustic!
I hope you enjoy this performance of this behemoth of an organ piece. Let me know!

I think this really is one of the greatest 20th Century organ pieces written..seems to have echoes of Reubke and Reger..an extraordinary and uplifting work of art.

Had the privilege some years ago of singing at Willan’s church (Church of St. Mary Magdalene/Toronto).

Perhaps my favourite non-Bach organ work. I had the pleasure of recording David Hill playing it at a session when he was about 20 years old at St Johns' College. Wonderful "Tuba Mirabilis" on that instrument, of which this work made excellent use! This performance at Truro will be an ongoing favourite of mine too, thanks for uploading it! [Edited to say I've just reached the end of the performance and I'm crying my eyes out!]

This is such a great organ, and when at Truro Cathedral School had the pleasure of turning the music for the then excellent organist Mr Winter one time when in full flow.

A piece new to me! Shows off the skills of composer, organist and organ builder/tuner in a most attractive way. You have married the Truro feed with your own sound track in a seamless way - quite some fear I imagine. Just love the strings underpinned with a 32’ flue. Great stuff! Thanks.

Have listened to this again recently. 10:55 - 11:35 is stunning as full organ is progressively taken back to softly spoken stops.

I love your huge compilations of organ music. Wonderful to listen to in the car and at work. One of these days I hope you'll get to play the great Wannamaker Organ at Macy's. Not sure if the youtube link will be allowed here but I first heard it on this Hallelujah Chorus performance. ruclips.net/video/wp_RHnQ-jgU/видео.html Keep up the wonderful work!

Absolutely spell binding performance Richard. BUT why do people bring children to a performance especially if it is a live recording. Please ask that no children are allowed next time as it really spoils a recording.

I once attended a piano recital, during which a baby was - eventually - taken out bawling its head off. The pianist actually stopped playing while this was dealt with, then turned to the audience and remarked - "I love babies. Especially on hot buttered toast." Then continued the performance. Perhaps babies are too much, but the only way to expose children to live classical music is to take them to concerts. But some enlightened concert promoters have taken to putting on parents-and-kids concerts, which are a very good idea.
