- Superclusters - regions of space that are densely packed with galaxies - are the biggest structures in the Universe. But scientists have struggled to define exactly where one supercluster ends and another begins. Now, a team based in Hawaii has come up with a new technique that maps the Universe according to the flow of galaxies across space. Redrawing the boundaries of the cosmic map, they redefine our home supercluster and name it Laniakea, which means ‘immeasurable heaven’ in Hawaiian.

The amount of work by astronomers that went into constructing this map of superclusters is really enormous.
It's the result of decades of painstaking measurements and study.

scientists need to prove their ideas are true before it can be accepted which is why science is such a powerful tool. it splits things into two groups stuff we know and stuff we don't know letting us build off of what was learned previously

I believe it can be achieved in a matter of time. For example Google, SENS, or even 2045 Initiative are working on that matter. Some prominent futurologists are even saying that human immortality will be achieved before year 2060 :)

With all the amazing places and discoveries we have made on earth I can only imagine what might be out there in deep space. If instant space travel was possible you could explore for an eternity and just be beginning to scratch the surface. Sounds kind of like the basis for "No Mans Sky". I am actually into back yard astronomy. Maybe sometime I will post a video to my channel about my Discovery 15" f/5 Truss Tube Dobsonian Telescope. It's been upgraded with 3D printed parts. On the best of nights I can just make out the spiral arms of distant galaxies. Every time I look into the eye piece I feel really small.

I used to clip and save newspaper stories about the Universe. The announcement of Superclusters of Galaxies was in the newspaper in the late 1950's early 1960's, I was in 4th. and 5th. and then 6th. grade at the time. I remember when they first measured and announced the size and age of the known Universe a few years later. Sadly I lost all those clippings of stories somewhere during my life as I am now 64. I think my family, brothers and sister or parents must have found them and thwown them out thinking thery were meaningless. But as a child I used to enjoy teaching those who would listen about the solar system, the galaxy, clusters of galaxies and finally superclusters. Most people had no idea of this science. Funny as it was published in the newspapers as I have already said. I am still always reading any publication on astronomy and our Universe. My most favorite subject in my entire life!

Born too late to explore the Earth, and too early to explore the universe. All we can do is stare up and wonder what might be out there.
I dont see humans creating infinite energy anytime soon to make wormholes, reaching speed of light requires infinite energy as well and zero mass, even if that can be gotten around relativity predicts it will take infinite amount of time to travel from point A to Point B at the speed of light as time stops at for the thing traveling at that speed also lightspeed is too slow for interstellar travel beyond some of the closest stars too us. so yeah we wont be exploring the universe my man, we're more likely to go extinct first.

Observable universe is just a sphere around every observer, so aliens in another galaxy would have their observable universe shifted from ours. They could observe the universe a bit farther in their direction and a bit shorter in our direction.

@@Neil6393 Pretty sure I never said it's impossible, but more improbable. Also Stephen Hawking is a theoretical physicist, not an astrobiologist. Just pay attention for Pete's sake, the size of the universe does not guarantee the widespread existence of life, just as the size of the moon does not guarantee the presence of a ladybug. They're two completely different subjects. The most you could come up with on the subject would be a hypothesis, not even a theory. Again it's like assuming there's some nightmarish apparition in your room because you gotta take a shit and feel weird.
I love rewatching this video. I use it as a reference whenever someone mentions galaxy migration, The Great Attractor or other epic space stuff. It's surprising and disappointing how many people have never even heard of Laniakea.

Being at the centre of things ain't all it's cracked up to be.
If we were at the centre of the Solar System we would be in the middle of a nuclear reaction.

IIARROWS to be honest with you if you understand the Big Bang and expansion of the universe then you will learn that there is no border to the universe. In a weird way yes we are the center of it. But so is another galaxy. Basically wherever you observe the universe is center of universe because of the rate of expansion. I learned this recently it’s cool.

Sadly what is in the night sky may not be there if we were to instantly travel over there. The light that we see is just “Old Light”, Light that has taken many many years to reach us. For example, a star around 10 Million Light years away from earth would shine light towards us, and we would see it. However, that light has taken 10 Million years to reach us, so what we are seeing is just an old picture of what said star looked like 10 Million Years Ago. Anything could’ve happened in that amount of time, so it may not even be there should we teleport over there T_T.
But even knowing this I too still imagine seeing other clusters and galaxies in person. Maybe one day humans will be able to actually travel like you said ^_^

The fermi paradox doesn't state that we are alone. It just brings up the question: "Why haven't we discovered alien life yet and why are there almost no signs?".
There are a lot of theories. Maybe alien life is rarer than we think. Maybe aliens don't want to get involved with us. Maybe our understanding of the universe is extremely incomplete.
There are tribes in papua new guinea who don't believe in white people because they don't have contact with the rest of the world. The government are leaving them alone and maybe the aliens are doing a similar thing.
Another theory is that every civilization is killing itself before it can inhibit other star systems or an entire galaxy. The distances between stars are massive and it takes a lot of very advanced technology to travel this far. It takes technological knowledge that may also be dangerous for their own civilization, f.e. artificial intelligence.
Maybe one day, on our search for alien life, we instead come across alien artificial intelligence. Scary thought but who knows.

It is funny to me that on a cosmic scale many systems look like neurons inside our brains. Those purple ones shown in the video in 00:50 resembled it.

It's amazing how we can see galaxies (Andromeda, Triangulum and satellite galaxies of our Milky Way) from Earth's surface and with the naked eye, just stunning.

Interestingly enough, they discovered recently that their might be multiple universes, meaning Laniakea super cluster is nothing but a small part of one particular universe, the multiple universes resemble a book where each universe is like a page, and outside this Universe cluster which consists of multiple universes there's another Universe cluster

If you want a update of the whole universe. They think that our whole Universe is at least 7 Trillion light years. Compared to the visible Universe of only about 90 Billion light years. And they calculated that in those 90 Billion light years there are at least 2 Trillion Galaxies. Now imagine the amount of Galaxies in the whole Universe. The observable Universe expands each year by about 60 Trillion kilometer.
