- A raccoon was quietly eating when something caught its eye. It made a few submissive looking moves - we thought it might be an older raccoon it was seeing. Turned out to be a very large cat - weird interactions...
Raccoons usually bow and nod just to other raccoons in their own family, so it's really unusual that he greeted the cat that way! What a fluffy cat, LOL.
I thought the same thing - I was surprised to see a cat walk out after all that bowing the raccoon was doing. That was indeed a "fluffy" cat - lol
Racoon: that raccoons acting strange
Cat: that cats acting strange

Your comment just about sums up the interaction - 😉
Seemed like he was trying to let the cat know he was a friendly and they could share. Love to see animal interaction like this

It seemed the raccoon didn't know how to react to the big fluffy cat. It was a very weird interaction...
@@WRCatBWHQ Maybe he’s the Pepe LePew of the raccoon world.
@@Hajde_budalla We think the raccoon was just confused by the cat. It was a weird interaction...
@@WRCatBWHQ Yes, like how Pepe LePew was confused by the cat, also.
That’s a big beautiful racoon and the cat is beautiful I’m glad they got along in my back yard I’ve seen cats and raccoons eating together and then go on their way I think that’s beautiful 🥰❤️

It was a very interesting interaction. I think both animals were more interested in the other rather than feeling threatened by the other.
But sometimes they attack and kill cats.
Both of them are beautiful 😍
They were both looking pretty good - like they had just come from the groomers - lol
As one that once had a racoon as a pet, the racoon did not want to play or was that a greeting! It was a threat display! There were some snarling along with it to! I had seen it many times as the kit got older and took over the house!

Your experience with a raccoon provides some valuable input to the interaction of the cat and the raccoon.
The Cat looked like it was probably first or second time it’s been out the house.
It was more timid than the Coon
Yes, that's a big cat, but I don't think the raccoon is wanting to play. I think it's trying to intimidate the cat into leaving, or fight. Raccoons don't really mess around too much. This wasn't a large raccoon, but the cat would still have a problem to deal with.
That was really something! Loved the staring contest! Who blinked first, lol? That was a beautiful cat.
Raccoon looked playful - cat wasn't interested. It was a big fluffball of a cat - lol
That interaction is reminiscent of WALL-E trying to get attention from EVE!!! All that look from the cat seems to say "DIRECTIVE"....LOL!

It was a really weird interaction...
I think he might be in love with the weird white raccoon.
AWE!
That was really cool! And yes weird too. Not what I would have expected at all.
I was totally surprised to see a cat come strolling out. I assumed it would be another raccoon based on how the raccoon was behaving - submissive bowing...
Curiosity did NOT kill the cat...this time!
That was a "curious" looking cat - lol. I think it could have stood up to the raccoon
Beauty! Is the food there specifically for raccoons / skunks??🦨 🦝🐈⬛
Scott (the site owner) puts out a mix of corn, peanuts, sunflower seeds, and whatever seeds & nuts have fallen from the feeders above. All the birds and animals eat that combination...
@@WRCatBWHQ Except for the carnivores, like the Himalayan house cat.
@@gerryconwayvoice We have a number of carnivores and omnivores that stop by. Red foxes, coyotes, minks, cats, etc.
when cats call off the engagement and dont want to fight they walk away very, very slowly, the cat was trying to do that, but I dont think the coon understood. the coons tail wagging is interesting.

I think both the raccoon and the cat were a bit confused about exactly what they were seeing. They were both interested in checking out the other...
I have 2 different stories for you. Both are true.
We do live in a medium size town.
1) years ago (about 30) we had an outdoor cat. One night I took my boys into the backyard to see the mamma and baby raccoons on a lower tree branch where the boys could see them. The boys were about 5 at the time. We quietly walked to the tree and mamma and the baby raccoons were on the tree branch..and there was an extra tail..our cat.
2) More recently (8ish years ago) we kept seeing a kitten sunning itself on our sidewalk. We left it alone because we already had some indoor cats. However, my wife fed it on our porch.
On a cloudless evening, I went outside to look at the stars. As I stood there, I felt a pat on my leg. I knew there was no food out yet, and I was going to fill the bowl as soon as I went in.
I figured it was the kitten. Nope, to my surprise, it was a baby raccoon that was patting my leg. It looked straight at me, and then looked up to the porch where the food bowl was.
I looked down to my other side and there was another baby raccoon and the kitten.
I fed everyone and we ended up taking the kitten in.
It still chortled like a raccoon and washed its paws when eating. It took about 2 years before it meowed or purred, and it was taught by our other cats.
Wherever it was that night the mamna raccoon had raised this kitten.
We still have him to this day and he's a totally great cat. He gets alone with all of the other cats. We think that because of his upbringing he is food driven. Hes a bit overweight.
I hope you enjoyed these true stories. Does anybody else have similar stories to share?
Interesting story - Nature is amazing
Even it bows to our Cat overlords....
Very interesting critter meeting.
Agree - it was an interesting interaction and a little bit weird.
I'm thinking that the cat and raccoon might have already known each other already. They both look well fed, too.
We have watched animal interactions for over 3 years now and this was a unique one. We had never seen that big (well fed) cat before so I doubt if the raccoon had. Normally the raccoons are aggressive in defending their "space" but this one seemed a bit intimidated by the big cat. The cat may have been a neighbor's cat that was out exploring for the night - we'll never know...
I feel like the racoon was just smitten with all that fluff. He was twidderpatted.

It seemed the raccoon didn't know what to make of the big fluffy cat. The way it acted was really unusual - lol
That cat was just hoping to catch a mouse, rat or vole at the feeder, not a freaking raccoon!

It seemed both the cat and raccoon didn't know what to make of the other. It was an interesting meeting.
My kitties don't like my house possum, they jus stay away from him. They will interact a bit with my big house bunny. Not much...we all know how cats are!
I've seen videos of raccoons boldly go up to a cats bowl while cat was eating and no matter how many times the cat napped the coon on the head, it would manage to swipe a pawful of food. Then repeat.
That cat has huge - I don't think the raccoon knew what it was dealing with - it was more interested than afraid
@@WRCatBWHQ Himalayan cats are nowhere near as large as they seem... they're all FLUFF! I have owned two of them.
@@WRCatBWHQ My mom and I have theorized that maybe it thought it was another raccoon due to the dark facial markings? But was confused by its smell haha
@@Beesbeeswhatsonthemenu That's a good possibility - it was a pretty big cat - and a wimpy raccoon - lol
Cat:. Eww, just passing through bro, as you were.
Typical cat - not interested in the raccoon at all - lol
Himalayan cats are nowhere near as large as they seem... they're all FLUFF!
Whatever its actual size, the raccoon was definitely having an unusual reaction to it.
i sense a romance between the raccoon and the cat 🐺💓🐱
Nope - just interested in seeing a different critter. I don't think the raccoon knew quite how to act or react to the big fluffy cat. The cat, being a cat, was indifferent - it's a cat thing...
Raccoons normally don't take off following a noise; they stand their ground and try to look intimidating. At least that's what I've encountered with them.
The raccoons are interesting - and fun to watch - Thanks for watching and commenting
I wonder if they kinda sorta knew each other?
Thanks for watching and commenting -
We had lots of discussion when we saw this interaction. The consensus was that the two critters were simply surprised by seeing a different species and were unsure exactly how to act...
@@WRCatBWHQ How interesting! Both so delicately cautious....and cute!
Wow looks like they were trying to introduce themselves to each other and become friends. This was AWESOME! GOD's Creation is the BEST! AMAZING!
It was an amazing and strange meeting. The raccoon was much more interested in the cat than the cat was interested in the raccoon - lol
What do you feed raccoons?

Oh imagine if they started playing or something. Is that cat wild? It looks like a maine coon
We never saw that cat before this interaction with the raccoon. It looked like it might be a domestic cat that got out for the night...
@@WRCatBWHQ maybe the neighbors? May want to check. That's one gorgeous cat. Himalayan possibly or ragdoll very large. I love your comment.. Big cat- very large.
@@oceanlover297 I never saw a cat that "big" - I think it must belong to one of the neighbors
It looked too well groomed to be living rough I would think?
The cat is Himalayan. Himalayan cats are nowhere near as large as they seem... they're all FLUFF! I have owned two of them.
The raccoon wasn’t playing with the cat, it was trying to intimidate it by raising up and trying to make itself appear bigger.
After watching raccoon interactions here over the last few years, we were of the opinion that the raccoon was unsure of how to react to the cat. It wasn't "playing" it was trying to figure out how to approach the cat...
The cat became more comfortable around the raccoon, based on how the raccoon was acting. Then they went off in the same direction…curious
They are neighbor friends
That coons got a nice fluffy pelt on him lol.watch for coon hunters and hes a big boy.i believe this coon and cat know each other way they act.
Did you miss the cat's swallowing? That's a stress/fight response. Ears back. I don't know coons, but that cat came in curious, and left nervous.
@@avoidinglunatics1314 true after you said it I noticed
It looked to me like the raccoon was trying to appear bigger. But I dunno 🤷🏻♀️
We couldn't figure out what the raccoon was "thinking" - lol. It was very strange. We have been watching many raccoons for the last three years and they are rarely "submissive" when they see a stranger...
Anyone know what the racoon tail movements mean?
If you are referring to the "tail between the legs" movements, I would assume that is part of the submissive behavior - kind of like when a dog does the same thing. It is uncomfortable in the situation...
@@WRCatBWHQ No I was referring more to the flickering tail movements, never saw a a raccoon do that. Tail b/w the legs for a canine signals fear, doubt that carries over to a different species.
@@Greg29 Maybe this article can answer your question on tail movement - northernwoodlands.org/outside_story/article/animal-tails
@@WRCatBWHQ Article only mentions the banding on raccoons' tails used as camouflage, not movements. Oh well it remains a mystery I guess.
