- Today Show Opening segment footage from April 6, 2003, documenting the sad death of NBC news journalist David Bloom, who, along with Soledad O'Brien, were the then 2 lead co-anchors of the weekend version of TODAY. David died from a pulmonary embolism while covering the war in Iraq. This was shocking news for me at the time since I'm a news junkie and I often watched Weekend Today for my weekend news updates in the morning, I included the show opener and a couple segments documenting David's passing.
So odd seeing Tim Russert say that Bloom's family will be part of the NBC family forever - and yet he'd die 5 years later.
I know seeing both of them so heartbreaking
Hard to believe it’s been 19 years since David Bloom died.
I can’t watch David without wanting to cry. Rip my hero
R I p Tim russert
20 years ago today. Boy, time flies. i saw this live and cried! Gone way too soon.
Ironically, Mr. Bloom passed away at 39 which also was the day after my 8th Birthday!
And 20 years later I’m around David Blooms age when he died. I am 40. I was 20
When he died, would turn 21 in May 2003
He was my favorite journalist, I remember watching his reports from the desert and then hearing the news of his death. He was gone too soon, RIP!
Back then I got much of my news from David Bloom/Weekend Today/NBC...and Mr. Bloom was a professional indeed, very good at delivering the news and working in the field to gather the news. I remember being so sad when I heard of his untimely death...and at such a young age.
I still remember this. All of this. In a way 9/11 and David Blooms death went hand in hand in my memory. We would have our tv on 24/7 as the us headed towards Baghdad with David Bloom reporting. Still miss him thought I knew him only through a box on my nightstand.
Katie Couric was surprisingly emotional here.
Tim Russert is also gone . The two of them made news actually interesting to watch.
When Soledad O'Brien Left NBC News For CNN In July 2003
20 years go by very fast, may David bloom rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing.
Can’t believe it’s been 20 years.
Hard to believe
I can’t believe it either. I’m now about David’s age, age of 40 20 years later. He was 39 but would been 40 next month according to this
He pioneered a Hi Tech vehicle that could help make the impact in the field and beyond. The Bloom Mobile is iconic and the blueprint for power vehicles combing advanced technology with reporting capabilities is genius. RIP Mr. Bloom and thank you.
I am remembering my favorite journalist DavidvBloom loved him today 20 year anniversary of the independence of Iraq David was instrumental in that
David is always remembered in my home! He was the best journalist! And so missed...always think of his family...such a beautiful family he had...so glad Melanie is remarried..❤
I'm crying watching this. It's just so sad!!! I'm living in a hotel, just met a drunk a day ago who proclaims their love for me. I can't be with a drunk, not even a rich one.
People at MSNBC have wicked humor, playing Cry Me a River in this same segment. Really? 😅
And only five years later, we'd lose Tim Russert.
What was the beautiful piano music in the beginning
Did anybody else notice that he is holding his leg?
Stop that damn piano!!!!
It’s been 20 years now wow
Another example that time flies...
