I have been in that tackle shop and the Lindy Watzit grub is a great bait. You can rig it two ways and the tail works differently depending on if it’s up or down.
the little bait looks almost like the body to the old school foxey jigs which were kinda like a beetle spin. wore everything from panfish to bass and crappies out on them.
That tackle shop had a good supply of senkos

I love soft plastic crickets. My sister bought me some and I was like “ what is this? Oh well might as well try it.” It is now one of my favorite lures period. Caught some decent bass on it too

You can do a sort of Texas rig on that little bug if you use a smaller octopus hook. With a free floating 1/16 oz slip weight. Should work fairly weedless as well.

Thqt little tell bait is suposed to be a halgramite but it's way to short they are normally 4 inches long. They work really well for largemouth in northern ontario

BTW Those bugs are popular in Minnesota, many are sold as pre-rigged jigs "Bitsy bugs." Good multi-species jig.

Fun one! That smallie wasn't very small leaving you jumping for joy right out of the boat. He'd be in my frying pan. They can't resist a portable mallard duck for it must be an incredible bonus when they actually score a nutritious organic duck that can actually fit in their mouth. Little guy would have grown big and strong from that one rare opportunity if it were actually a real duck.

The Watsit is actually my all time favorite bait, I have a entire box full of them.... I tip them with a minnow and cast them from shore to smack walleye.
I found a bag of those grubs in my dad’s old tackle box once and they worked pretty well probably just cuz nobody else would ever throw them

That savage gear duck is an amazing lure. You have to put the spinning feet on the back and add the trail hook. One of the best top waters around. You were just fishing it incorrectly

we have orange belly newts here in new hampshire, lm and sm bass don't like them esp around the spawn

Lucky-E-Strike makes grubs like that. I've had decent luck with them for brown trout. Not my first choice though.

That grub/bug is a Whatsit jig body. They do pretty well for me.
AP come back up to Ontario its Walleye and Trout season and Bass and Musky are opening soon.

I think that the little insect thing that you were using is in imitation of a hellgrammite. It is the larva of the dobson fly that lives under rocks in streams. I have caught them live before using a 4 ft seine. They are like candy to smallmouths.
