Matt, I subscribed to your channel months ago because of how humble you are and how your passion for fishing just captivated me. I lived and fished in the Bay Area for six years and caught a lot of the same fish the same way as you do. I fish commercially in Hawaii as well as recreationally, but you have such a great personality and humility about the whole thing. There’s lots of show-offs around that are much less appealing than you. I’ve fished all around the country and when I want to see it done so naturally and real, I watch your channel. Come to Hawaii if you can. Totally different fish there but the techniques are basically the same. Fishing is universal. It’s about the great outdoors and being there. Thanks so much for doing what you are doing. It makes me smile, brother.

The kids know this stuff now, but I’m old. The internet in Hawaii was seen as something evil and fake. So we didn’t do it. I’m secretly trying to catch up but obviously not very good at it. If my Hawaiian friends saw a kid wasting time on their cell phone, theyed grab it and throw it in the ocean. Make them swim for it. Either way, it’s dead. They have to listen to their elders. To the ancient stories. That’s sort of cool in one way, they learned to dive. It’s changing, and the elders don’t like it. But thanks for telling me Matt has been to Hawaii, I’ll look it up. That Matt puts it out there, we see what we’ve done but are reminded that such a basic thing is so cool and under appreciated. It’s not raping and pillaging, it’s a few guys having fun. Commercial fishing was my job, and I saw how it’s depleated the stock. What Matt is doing is bringing to light that one man can fish and a family can eat. The average fisherman isn’t the problem. It that the supply and demand isn’t sustainable. A guy on the rocks with a pole is just doing what comes naturally. And that’s extremely cool.

Yo, what a great experience, man. I'm Cree from northern Quebec. I was partially-raised in the bush. No neighbors (there was another family was about 40km away). No roads (so that 40km would be like a day's ride by canoe on the return trip - which would be upstream and quite slow). No power (everything we have, except the camp's fires. is quiet). No running water (you appreciate your water use far more when you have to carry your own water up from the lake). No plumbing (faaaaawk). Anyway, my grandfather raised me - we don't know exactly when or where he was born, but he was definitely... of the Bush. I got to spend a lot of time with him in the Bush. Man, I don't even know how many nights we had like that... just me, my father, and his father... huddled by some dim light, laughing and sharing stories as we ate our catch/kill of the day while it rained/snowed outside.
Video reminded me so much of a fishing / crawdad trip I did a few years ago. I caught 3 good sized trout and an abundance of crawdads ( I dive for them , and pick the ones I want ). Beautiful day and ended up having a storm come in. Didn't stop us. Cooked some of the best food ever , rained on hard , slammed some cold beers........it's what life is about!

I'm just starting to hit up the Monterey area, trying my hand at fishing off the coastline (I'm coming in from the central valley) any tips or favorite place to go for rockfish? I've been making my way down the coast from Davenport, but havent found any good spots yet :/

I'm so loving your videos! Here above Los Angeles and below Fresno it's been raining too much even though we need it. Plus it seems freezing cold out and the mountains around us are covered in snow. My friend and I tried fishing half a day in between the rains with not much luck. At least we had your video to watch and we almost felt like we were there with you. Thank you for fishing because that lure you were using is what we use now to catch nice striped bass!
A lot of them are deep sea fish that’s why and they look really odd out here in California and other spots around the West Coast even flounder look odd with their eyes in the front of their head.

Dungeness Crab is the best crab. These guys have catching Fish and Crabs down to a Science. Reminds me out at The Sunshine Skyway Bridge back in the 80's Catching my first 92 pound Cobia on 10 pound test. I almost lost him because he was so heavy and 10 pound test is not that strong but, After about 15 minutes I got him up on the bridge with my friends help. I was amazed watching these two guys catch over $200.00 in Crab. I can so relate to everything he is doing. I haven't fished in years. They never had those kind of Crab traps that I knew of back in the 80's. Or, Maybe they did and I did not know about them. I wish I could have been right there with them after they cooked that Dungeness Crab. Congratulations. You really impressed me a fisherman of 33 years from 1973 until 2006. This video has me thinking about going back out to the Skyway again. And I still have everything but my Cast Net. Great Stuff!

I was born in Cali but raised in Texas so we crab a lil differently. We walk on the jetty with yarn and chicken thighs. Wed tie the chicken long enough and just throw it out as far as we could then slowly pull in. Some how it worked to bring the crabs close enough till we got it with the net.
Everything about this video. Awesome. Never had that much crab luck! Everyone says chicken for bait up here in the Northwest. Gotta try mackerel next. More underwater camera shots. Those are killer.

If you eat very much ocean fish you have eaten plenty of worms Halibut Salmon most fish have worms period! they die when you cook the fish and for the most part you want even see them. Theyre clean they have been eating the fish muscle so its not much different tan eating the fish anyway

I'm so loving your videos! Here above Los Angeles and below Fresno it's been raining too much even though we need it. Plus it seems freezing cold out and the mountains around us are covered in snow. My friend and I tried fishing half a day in between the rains with not much luck. At least we had your video to watch and we almost felt like we were there with you.

A lot of them are deep sea fish that’s why and they look really odd out here in California and other spots around the West Coast even flounder look odd with their eyes in the front of their head.
They're variations of predatory rockfish with big heads and big mouths. They camouflage well amongst the rocks.

Yeah they may be ugly but they taste 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙, especially Rockfishes like Lingcods and Cabezon. Fish tacos are sooo amazing with them lol.

Dungeness Crab is the best crab. These guys have catching Fish and Crabs down to a Science. Reminds me out at The Sunshine Skyway Bridge back in the 80's Catching my first 92 pound Cobia on 10 pound test. I almost lost him because he was so heavy and 10 pound test is not that strong but, After about 15 minutes I got him up on the bridge with my friends help. I was amazed watching these two guys catch over $200.00 in Crab. I can so relate to everything he is doing. I haven't fished in years. They never had those kind of Crab traps that I knew of back in the 80's. Or, Maybe they did and I did not know about them. I wish I could have been right there with them after they cooked that Dungeness Crab. Congratulations. You really impressed me a fisherman of 33 years from 1973 until 2006. This video has me thinking about going back out to the Skyway again. And I still have everything but my Cast Net. Great Stuff!

A good grab lesson: if the crab is brown under it’s full of meat if not it’s almost empty.
I was born in Cali but raised in Texas so we crab a lil differently.
We walk on the jetty with yarn and chicken thighs. Wed tie the chicken long enough and just throw it out as far as we could then slowly pull in. Some how it worked to bring the crabs close enough till we got it with the net.

If you eat very much ocean fish you have eaten plenty of worms Halibut Salmon most fish have worms period! they die when you cook the fish and for the most part you want even see them. Theyre clean they have been eating the fish muscle so its not much different tan eating the fish anyway
