The Tervuren is a medium-sized, square-proportioned dog in the Herding dog group. Males stand between 24 and 26 inches, and weigh approximately 56 lb. Females are finer and smaller. It is recognized by its thick double coat, generally mahogany with varying degrees of black overlay (completely missing overlay on males is a serious fault), including a black mask. A small patch of white on the chest is permissible, as well as white tips on toes. The Tervuren may also be sable or grey, but this may be penalized in the show ring in some countries according to the standard of the registering body. While the FCI permits any type of red (mahogany) coat including pale yellow (sand colour) and grey the AKC has stricter rules regarding colour. While the FCI states that fawn/mahogany is to be preferred, grey colour is a fault under AKC rules.

I don't know dog breeds well, but learning a lot on this channel. I've never heard of this dog breed, ever.
These are gorgeous dogs :) I'm a hop, skip, and a jump away from On-the-Lamb. My girl is getting older. I'm still curious if she can do it.

Many people don't know about this breed :) I have a Tervuren too, plenty of videos on my channel, if you're interested. What the ladies said was so true.
My neighbors had two of these when I was a kid, one after the other. They lived a couple of minutes down a slope, and the dogs used to escape and come visit our sheltie (who did not appreciate it).
The terv isn’t a breed it’s a variety of the Belgian Shepherd breed. The AKC botched up the classification.

Too bad the AKC botched up Belgian Shepherd classifications. This is a variety not a breed and the AKC is limiting the genetic pools because of ridiculous politics.

You should do a video on the AKC's newest breed. The Azawakh. It's a sight hound that's also a livestock/guard dog.
The black Belgian Shepherds are called Groenendaels. I have heard they are somewhat different when it comes to protection work too. Great video, wish these ladies were living much further north!

I herd that the fci says that they’re in the same breed with the AKC they’re different And I also heard that you could read both of them together
Everywhere except the USA they are considered the same breed.My Mal is actually half Terv.In Canada she is a purebred but in the U.S. she is considered a mutt.
For me I think they should be the same breed all together all three of them But that’s just my own opinion

We have a gorgeous little Welsh Corgi but we are wanting a dog with more leg to move faster/farther distance. Always loved the Tervs, how do they get along 'real world' with other herding dogs? Would be raising her with our corgi girl from a pup. Our corgi is incredibly smart and we trained her for field work with vocal commands. Hoping she could help the pup learn!
Check out the channel « Rancho the Dog » , you can get a grasp of what is a Real Life Terv lol. Wonderful dogs, a bit velcro, and easily trainable. If you are dedicated, I don’t see any issue getting a terv pup.
Many people hear Belgian Sheperd and thing Malinois. They barely know about the varieties.
as Belgian pronounce it please correctly: ter vü ren. See German ü pronounciating, as it is not the English u pronounciating. These 4 variations are considered the same breed; originating from the Lakenois. Lakenois are from Laken where they were linnen guarders. Malinois from Mechelen were guardians and herders. Groenendalers are more herders, also guardians. Real Tervurens are short or rough coated, not long coated. So longhaired Tervurens are not standard to Belgian breed norms. So they all came from the same background, being selected for what they were good for. Coat was secondary. I don't see a longhaired Tervurens crossing smoothly dense rural Belgian terrain.
as I recall it now: I knew a neighbor who had a Malinois police dog which I volunteered to do pack work with. After seeing the bite marks on my arm, the owner a police officer told me the dog would jump thru 1.2 cm thick glass windows on command.
an error slipped in: longhaired Tervurens are standard to Belgian breed norms. Lakenois should be rough coated, not long haired. Drying linnen, do u remember?

how about a video where you have herding dogs working with live stock protection dogs! I understand this can be hard as the LGDs don't appreciate the herding dogs scaring the sheep....can be problematic. Also, I have seen Huskies being used to herd. It would be nice to see non standard herders although I don't think huskies would be non standard in Russia, just here in America. The dogs we have today are driven by what is available from breeders but the breeders in the US focus on the show ring so you get what the showman wants and that is aesthetics not ability.
Oh, that is why you wont find the Swedish Elkhound (Jamthund) in the United States as the Swedes don't want their hunting dog ruined.....but the Finns have no problem selling the dogs so now there is a guy in Canada trying to start a breeding program in the Western hemisphere. Fortunately, he is a good breeder and responsible.
