I really don't get it why the US has only 2 parties, in most places in the world there's no way AOC, Warren and Bernie would be in the same party as Biden, Clinton and Bloomberg
Theres actually more parties, but the tea is, the electorate doesn't ever consider them bc of the aforementioned 'electability'. The 'other' parties (independents, libertarians and conservatives) are often less full of hot searing bullshit than the dems/reps, but underfunded w/ no organization behind them. The dems/reps have enormous amounts of that so, those are the only relevant parties.
It's because people have a tendency to vote for the person that they think has the best chance of winning. If it's between a third-party candidate that they really like and a major-party candidate that they're okay with, they'll vote for the major party candidate because their chances are better. Because our voting system is based off majority, people gravitate towards two parties. Also technically, Bernie's an independent
@@paulineliu8286 I thought he was an independent but not anymore. And that tendency exists, but there are some ways to avoid it(but then you need to change the system)
Thanks for successfully explaining caucuses in a way that didn't make me zone out or sob in a corner. I've been doing enough of both with the standard primaries.
I loved this! Coming to this video as a British person with little to no understanding of US politics, I had no idea what to expect. I’ve left with a deeper understanding of American politics, plenty of food for thought and some new reading material for quarantine, all without the video being too complex, intense or in any way boring. Thanks Dan! 🇺🇸✨
"you're gonna win the nomination because people miss your cooler more attractive friend" OOF also I brought a stapler to school because unlike some people I am PREPARED
I hate how Bernie is consistently refered to as an old white man when he would be the first ever Jewish president if he won. I hate that identity is only important to establishment types insofar as it fits their narrative.
dan i love these new long form videos they are truly so good also, my favourite set decoration moments: - hillary standing next to that candle on the bookshelf - those two giraffes all the way in the background
as much as i agree with your points, dan, i don't think it's fair to simply state that sanders vs biden = "two white men", seeing as sanders is jewish. i understand your point - that we still ended up with a fairly non-diverse pool of democratic candidates (considering the starting point of the race), and that sanders, ultimately, "looks" like " a safe choice". but he will not have the perspective of the world of a white (non-jewish) man, as he faces (some) discrimination too (ie the nazi flag someone brought to one of his rallies recently). ps. loved your jon stewart-esque paper tapping at the end
i don't know what it is but watching dan talk about literally anything makes me very calm. you're making me learn shit about politics that no one else was gonna teach, so thank you.
Not really interested in US politics, so I thought I was here just for the banter. The banter was good, but so was the analysis, and now I'm interested. Can't wait to have my hopes crushed in November, cheers!
"In 2016, Hillary Clinton lost [Michigan] by 11,000 votes" and I, a resident of the bluest district in the state, have been Drinking To Forget ever since
What a fantastic video, you did an excellent job at explaining all this stuff ! As a European following with attention American politics I had no idea what caucuses actually were, that's a wild process ! Loved your Watergate joke, but feeling personnally attacked as I brought a stapler to school in my pencil case and you didn't need to come for me like that ^^' Anyway, this was a great video and thank you very much for the time it must have taken you to edit all of it :)
This is a very good video, but I have one issue with it! Yes, Biden and Bernie are both old white men, but you cannot discount Bernie Sanders' Jewish heritage as an important part of his identity, and why some less than accepting people might not be willing to support him. When you consider the rising wave of anti-semitism in American (and all around the world for that matter), a Jewish president at this point in time would be very progressive.
Wonderful video. Please continue talking about politics, your take on it is one that informs me without making me feel stupid, and I am so grateful for that 🌻
funnily enough, the news graphics at the beginning didn't even make me blink until you were like "can we make these go away" like jesus maybe we do have too much stuff going on in our newscasts it's like a powerpoint presentation on steroids
Some thoughts: - Please do the accent more. - John Hickenlooper had excellent branding and I'm so glad he's running for Senate. - Illinois is demographically the most representative state of the Democratic Party. - Iowa has a law saying they have to be the first contest, NH has a law saying they have to be the first contest. It's an economic issue, being first in the nation brings huge money to the state. - I'm really interested to see if you think Bernie should drop out now? - I'm also really interested to see your thoughts on UK politics? It's evident you're on the centre-left, but I wondered who you like the sound of from the UK Labour leadership?
I never really comment on RUclips (I think this is my second or third comment although I've been watching since 2008), but this time I just have to mention how much I enjoyed this video. It is so great to have a topic presented with that much honest passion and an impressive amount of knowledge AND great humor - and plus at this time, so refreshing to be focusing on another big piece of news apart from the huge and obvious one. It's like getting an escape from the scary current events, while still hearing about current events and thus feeling adult-y and serious. ^^ So, terrific job, thank you, and I hope you feel like making more similar stuff. :)
Deadset forgot I was a patron until I saw my name in the credits 😂 obsessed with this video though, my fave you’ve ever done... reading is fundamental and honestly, would watch Ru host a debate in that style.
Considering I fall asleep when I try to read up on politics, these videos are very helpful. . . Also that American accent was absolutely amazing. Made my day 😘
When you started "opuleence"-ing and then opening the library? I broke, and had to rewatch cus I laughed so hard. Also, great, informative and terrifying video.
Dan: I admit I was cynical going into this video because I study politics and live and breathe this stuff. But you very much nailed it. One thing: the only (and I mean only) good reason for Iowa and NH to go first is that it forces candidates to go to states that aren’t huge media markets, so they have to meet face to face with voters instead of campaigning by TV interview (which they start to do after the first 4 states). That being said, there are states that are equally as small with small media markets that should be the first as they are as more representative of the country and Democratic electorate (Ohio, Pennsylvania or Georgia to name a few). Seriously though, I really enjoyed this! Would love to hear you go into depth about more topics, I loved the Oscars and 2019 election videos as well.
On another tangent, as a citizen from Chicago, the Covid quarantine has made voting difficult. The state has no intention of allowing a new vote to be held. 🤬
M Tri yeah. There is a lot of talk (and bragging) about American Democracy but there is very little in the way of actively ensuring people have their voice and making certain every vote counts. Then there will be lots of discussion and blame thrown around regarding voter turn out as though this is the system modern voters would pick. As though it isn't preferred by those who hope to benefit from the flaws in the system. Sorry about the negativity. Sad, frustrated, anxious, and feeling just a little but hopeless over here. Have some emoji animals to counter balance it. 🐶🐱🐼🐷🙊🐙🐳
Man, I'm so glad Washington state moved over to a mail in primary (like all of our other voting was) this year. It's wild to me that so many states make people go to physical locations to vote. I thought everyone voted by mail here when I first started engaging politically (2015/2016, yes I was very late to the game). Caucuses are a whole other level of insane. Also, you explained caucuses better than a lot of actual US news sources I listened to, so A+. I don't know why you want to torture yourself with our crazy, but I'm glad you do 'cause this is top notch entertainment, and I find it really interesting to hear what people from other countries think of our politics.
The problem with putting all the primaries on one day is that it would automatically ensure that only the richest (or best funded) candidates would be viable from the get go. Even a single state level campaign is extremely expensive between advertisements, staffing, travel, event costs, etc. Typically campaigns use early successes as talking points for further fundraising. Dan didn't go into this in the video, but a lot of the people mentioned (like Corey Booker and Kamala Harris) dropped out even before the Iowa caucus because (in part) they couldn't raise enough money to keep going.
Thank you for making my night better with the crap painting that our election has become. It's still in a gallery and some people think it works because the contrast is worth admiring but most people understand its crap on a canvas. If that made any sense, great. I've had two drinks and the fear of being in Germany while my friends and family are either panicking in Illinois or still trying party keeps me livid. And even though it's scary to be in this situation, it's also fascinating as well.
