1. Junia is a woman's name in the Roman era. Junia Secunda, was an ancient Roman woman who lived in the 1st century BC. She was married to the triumvir Marcus Aemilius Lepidus. No man was called Junia in Ancient Rome.
2. There is no Jewish translation of a man's name into "Junias", it does not exist.
3. Joanna is a Jewish name and Junia is the Roman equivalent of Joanna.

American reformed teachers are making a great impact here in Finland. We have very few reformed churches, but now people in them are increasing and many share the same testimony of getting into reformed theology through internet!
I think Junia was a female. There are other important women in the bible. And if the name Junia is common and Junias apparently wasn't even a real name....

United Bible Society actually printed a retraction after translating “Junia” as “Junias” and they admitted they were wrong. Nothing in history can confirm that Junias was a regular name in that time, while Junia was. A 200AD - 250AD, P46, manuscript has the “Julia” transliteration. You say egalitarians tend to stretch things??!! Please…..there is so much wrong with this.
(Sigh)...Greek sentence structure, people. Allow me to explain;
1. The use of gender in language was for categorizing nouns. Junia is actually spelled with an additional (s). So the true translation was Junias. Iounias. Used similarly the way male and females today would share names such as;
Gale, Kim, Billie, Angel (which was my dad's name), Charlie, Blair and so on. Unfortunately Junia as a female apostle has been propagated by the catholic church and has made it in many english translations which are JUST translations. Example of how translations screw things up just look at the NIV which leaves out a notable 30 verses from Matthew through the epistles. Some dealing with the deity of Christ.
2. In the Greek, the sentence reads that they..."are of note (notable) among the apostles." Meaning that the "apostles" thought very highly of them. They were not apostles, just well regarded by them. So Junias could have been male or female, and imprisoned with Paul since the Romans didn't care one way or the other. However females with males in a roman prison often led to sexual misconduct of some degree.
Stick to the original languages and you won't go wrong and start a whole new doctrine.
James White being ambiguous because he doesn't want to admit that all the evidence including in the subject he so eagerly wants to get his doctorate from "Textual criticism" points to the fact that Junias was a female Apostle, even Daniel B Wallace a leading figure in this field wrote a whole journal arguing for this fact, I know James being a reformed preacher does not want to hurt the feelings of his peers who don't tolerate female preachers, this is how you know James White is not an honest man, at least also he is looking out for his reputation in this field of study since he so badly wants his work against the KJV be taken seriously
Where did Wallace argue for that? I know for a fact he wrote a paper against that reading so it’s unlikely he wrote one in favor of it.

@@jordandthornburg The text literally says Junias was an apostle that's why the debate was whether Junias was male or female and Wallace argues she was Female
@@fernandopaulus9088 no it doesn’t. This shows you don’t know the issue very well. Wallace wrote a paper arguing exactly against that conclusion while maintaining she was female. That is not the main debate. I encourage you to look it up. It’s easily available online. I think it was coauthored by someone name Bure.

I think the Bible is clear that women can’t be pastors or teachers of men, however, not only was Junia an apostle, but Deborah was a prophetess and Phoebe was a deaconess. So clearly women are not prohibited from all Church positions
I wouldn't consider a prophet/prophetess a church position.

In the earlier church deacon just meant servant.

Jonathan Billings scripture EXPLICITLY says women shall not teach or assume authority over a man. Its clear.
My NASB says, "Junia." It was published in 2020 by the Lockman Foundation. Junia was "outstanding in the view of the apostles." Rm 16:7
I use the AV, which also has the name Junia.
In context sounds like they are both males. But of course if you want to solidify your argument that women should be pastors and apostles then you will read into the text what you desire. And that is wrong

John Chrysostom wrote, “Greet Andronicus and Junia . . . who are outstanding among the apostles”: To be an apostle is something great. But to be outstanding among the apostles- just think what a wonderful song of praise that is! They were outstanding on the basis of their works and virtuous actions. How he thought it should be translated or interpreted, not now it should be translated necessarily. Those aren’t the same thing.
