BSA bush to bearing conversion #1

  • Back again (what, so soon?)
    Inspired by the engine I did some work on in recent episodes and having collected some parts with this very thing in mind, I'm heading off on another project before finishing the multitude of others I have already started (sound familiar?)
    The BSA (and others) timing side bush conversion to roller bearing.

    Well there you go. I didn't realize that punters were having there A10's & A7's oil end feed for the crank modified, I always thought that was the preserve of the A65's of which I owed one. It was a '64 model and it blew itself to bits before I knew that such a mod was being carried out by some small engine mechanics in my city. Hope it goes well and will keep up with the videos you put out on your progress. Thank you. (I knew a fellow from Stafford years ago - Greame Chester I think he had a garage).

    Looking forward to this project Ade. I need to drive up to Staffs and hunt around hedge bottoms. No BSA bits in the ones around here unfortunately! If you ever decide to sell AG Engineering polo shirts I'd happily sport one in my workshop. Dean in Oxfordshire.

    I really enjoy your videos - thanks for sharing. One suggestion - you might want to put "what" you do in the title for the videos (welding cast aluminum, milling bearing races, etc). I think more viewers will find your channel with the additional search words...

    Wonderful. I have a A10 engine that has been bodged like yours so I'll be following very closely. I pulled the crankshaft out of a cupboard where the garage had flooded a few years ago, it has suffered quite badly. I'll send you a picture if thats possible. Thanks for these wonderful videos.

    What do you think is the most common thing to cause a big end to let go like that? A few years back I had one let go on a fresh rebuild with about 100 miles on the engine.It caused major damage but I was able to save the cases.Im not sure if the bearing spun or what.It was a standard crank with standard big end bearings and torqued to specs.Now the old girl has about 3500 miles on it and is holding out very well.It was the timing side that let go.Lets just say that the first few miles were a bit nerve wrenching not knowing what caused the damage in the first place.So far so good.

      Not sure with this particular engine, the Bush actually looks reasonable, no sign of turning or seizure and despite the damage, I don't think it had previously been dismantled, little butchery, no stripped threads etc. I'll try to address some of the questions in a video soon.

    Did you call yourself an amateur machinist? If you are an amateur, I am an unborn machinist, lol. If you can make something out of that collection of rough aluminum cast offs, you are not only a pro but an artist. Good stuff as always, looking forward to watching the rest of the build.

    I had a number of BSA A10"s and A65s , every single one had bush main bearing trouble , its a very poor design , sad they never improved it when the A50\A65 was launched .

      I completely agree, the first BSA bush I did (hand scraped back then!) was on a Thunderbolt, they had the perfect opportunity to change to roller and end feeding the crank then, but I suppose stuck in the thought bubble, regards Ade

      @@AGEngineering when i was a boy on the farm we had a B.S.A 650. Gold Star ro run around on, we decided to takeit apart and service it on an old coat on the ground in the wind and rain of North Scotland, of course that idiea went sideways,,,

    If only the BRITISH MOTOR CYCLE industry had
    A little more back bone and knocked the rough
    edges off the very basic engines ,
    Basic engineering balancing fly wheels etc etc .
    Scrap sand moulding turned to injection moulding
    We would still be leading the world.

      We're to big to fail, largest motorcycle company in the world, we'll just rest on these laurels and not invest... 😢
