I just added HOBBYSOUL Height 5.0'' Tires 2.2 tires, and the HobbyWing Fusion Se 1800KV motor to the GateKeeper. I was shocked how much better the GateKeeper performed. Thanks for your video.
It's a good test video. I also tested other tires. It wasn't bad. There were shortcomings and strengths. There are many reasons, but I think it's worth the test. These test videos will help rc users a lot. Good job. 👍😁😁👍👍💯
Always a treat to learn new stuff. Feels like although the added clearance helped with climbing obstacles, the high CoG shortcomings of the Gatekeeper were only exacerbated. Trade offs, as usual with vehicle dynamics, are what will dictate your results, and will align with your gameplan/strategy only depending on your use and needs.
For sure. It needs to get lower rather than higher, but even though it was bouncier and harder to control on 2.2s, the higher fun factor was undeniable :)
@@RCTNT Would you say a softer foam would've solved the bounciness? Maybe the springrate of the foam was made for heavier rigs, hence why it made it work a bit less with the suspension on this regard.
@@YoShImUrA53 interesting. You could be right there. Though the foams and tires aren't bouncy in their current form, they dampen things pretty well. I got the sense it was floaty on account of its high COG. Even so, you might be exactly right on that. Good thinking.
@@RCTNT I wonder how stiff the 2.2 sidewalss are... As a side-thinking alternative (i.e probably not a good idea), how about fitting smaller foams (say, from the 4,75 tires)? I wonder if the 2.2 rubber would collapse, negating of any benefit from the bigger radius, of if it'd become a softer "third stage" to adapt to the terrain...
@@YoShImUrA53 my feeling is this might actually work, but it would still be ineffective or at least, inefficient, at least with these tires. Diminishing returns, especially in comparison to the bigger issue of a towing center of gravity! I like how you think, though. If I was looking to compete with this in some weird clown car class, I'd definitely experiment with your idea on this. An extra edit to say actually you might be onto something here. I'll stew on it awhile.
I’m wondering if you still have the same opinion on the Gatekeeper and it’s suspension after running the Ecto, and even beating the Ecto with the gatekeeper, and the Ecto besting the Sendero. A rig you coined as the best RTR available. Thanks! And great channel BTW!
Hm, yeah that's interesting isn't it. I admit I can lose perspective over time given all the models I'm playing with constantly here. I'd better have another look at the GK here and think about it some more. The GK really beat the Ecto in that other H2H video I did 10 months ago, I just watched through it briefly now while I thought about your comment. Thanks for bringing it up. I'll think on it some more. Right now, I'm not sure! The Enduro platform is brilliant, overall. But which is the best in the family? I really don't know! We know Ecto beats Sendero but maybe I need to test GK vs Ecto some more. (I've got to get the Bushido tested, too!) Cheers
good video! now try lowwring it as low as possible, 2.8 trenchers, and 3s and see if it can do Yeti things! i agree that rear susp screams go faster, not crawl. that body is also super heavy...needs a good trim or a power wagon body to crawl
Very nice, I went and subscribed! I found your Gatekeeper video when I was watching on the TV, so then I went and checked your channel and this video is up, it is basically made for me! I just built my Gatekeeper but I had bought too small tyres (96mm), so I ordered a couple different options, cheap Louise premounted tyres, both on 1.9 and 2.2 wheels, so pretty much the same as your experiment. Plus I also bought some monster truck tyres because I'm stupid, ha ha. The Gatekeeper is my first 10th scale crawler, so I'm learning a lot. No idea what I need it for but it looks cool!
That was hilarious and awesome to read! It's fun stuff, eh? Thanks for sticking around, so glad you're here and more importantly, so glad you've found crawling! Good stuff! Enjoy your new beastie :D
I don't think the extra width would offset the loss of clearance, generally speaking. However, on some courses I bet it would do. For my local rocks, where there are many problems that test break over angle more than side hilling, I'd tend to thinking the stock track width is probably about optimal. Your mileage may vary, of course!
Well you've gotta compare apples to apples. The Gatekeeper here is something of a different machine to a TRX4. However, the Ecto is more like the Sport, and the Base Camp, for example. Comparing those would be more useful. I've done exactly that: ruclips.net/video/psFjmvRa2Mc/видео.html
Thanks for the informative video! I had the idea of putting 2.2s on my Redcat gen7 because the center diff housings are so large hit everything! Any thoughts?
Well, it'd mud like a boss and it'd look tough, but you'll sacrifice crawling ability overall, I'd think.. If you can borrow a set from a friend, maybe test first before you drop coin on the swap. See what you think. Generally speaking, you'll compromise it as a crawler, but it definitely adds novelty value and makes it quite bouncy and fun on a trail or in gravel and mud!
Definitely a good solution if you have a few smaller ones to use! (my BC8 has 2x 3S 5800mAh batteries in parallel and on bigger walks, I put 3x 3S 2200mAh batteries into my TRX6!)
You bet, that'd be the logical choice! But for anyone who has a GK already and is wondering about 2.2's, well, here's one answer. Thanks for watching :)

Solid rig isn't it. I'm not familiar with those tires. Glad you're enjoying it.
Did you guys change your pinion?
I didn't, because it was just for the video, but if running 2.2s all the time, it would definitely be worth it. Drop a tooth or two, yep.
Thank you for the quick response and making this video. 👌🏽

Thanks. More tests coming, with additional tires, additional trucks and different conditions (dry, wet, muddy). More data is good!

I’d lower it

You want 2.2s on a gatekeeper get a bomber lol
