Your knowledge of voicings, phrasing, motifs, and just music in general is phenomenal. I am a pianist/composer really trying to improve my soloing. My biggest struggle is deciding whose teaching I want to run with, as I have wasted a lot of money over the past 30 years on literally hundreds of various books on technique, theory, harmony, etc., only benefiting from a handful. So far yours has been the most helpful in terms of immediate application and realistic usability IMHO. Thank you for your generosity!
This is a very useful lesson. I would suggest that instead of using the typical yt infomercial-sounding hyperbole in the titles - "amazing" or "must-know" - "useful" would be fine. Your reputation is intact, we're here because the lessons are good, useful, helpful, and that's all you need.
I love the way you give practical advice and exercises that I can start practicing and applying to my tunes right away. This is how jazz piano should be taught!
A fantastic lesson, also in terms of teaching methodology. You give solutions like mathematical formulas which I love. You keep putting new challenges in front of me. I am not a professional pianist, although I have been playing since I was a child. After the age of 55, when I did my "life tasks", I study jazz harmonies every day and lately I have been playing in hotels and restaurants. Thank you so much for wanting to share your knowledge, may it be rewarded in your life.
Holy sh!t bro just a few weeks ago i started experimenting and practicing with diatonic chord voicings and now you drop this! you just blew my mind what crazy stuff you can actually do with that technique thank you so much
Wow. You are not only a great player, but a wonderful teacher. I grow with each video you share. Please keep it up! BTW, played Body and Soul with the late great Spider Martin and Sonny Stitt. Love the human element.
Just experimenting with this 'diatonic' approach on My Foolish Heart and it really opens up so many possibilities and creates more fluidity. It gives you more scope and control of the keyboard. Thanks again Noah!
Thank you very much for making this tutorial. We all owe you a lot. Have you ever thought to do a mini course for solo piano ? I would be very much looking forward to it if you were about to. Cheers!!!!
Some nice sounds - reminiscent of 'locked hands' technique. Puts me in mind of Hoagy Carmichael. Wondering, though, if I wanted to thin out the voicings, what might be a good approach?
Amazing video! When you're moving diatonic voicings up and down a scale, what scale are you using over the Bb7 b9? Also I struggle to figure out what scale to play over minor ii-V's for the right hand. Do you use the melodic minor a minor third above the root (i.e. C melodic minor over A half diminished). Same with the dominant chord. Appreciate the help in advance!
Hey Noah, I love your videos but I need guidance and I've been struggling. I'm new to jazz on piano and I love neo soul. I'm good at playing on guitar and I understand concepts. But I can't physically play anything jazzy on the piano. I've watched a lot of your videos and you show many things but idk how or where to start with voicings and major 7 or neo soul chords confidentially. Is there any exersize you recommend as a beginner to start with neojazz chords and voicings? Any help is greatly appreciated 🙂, Austin
Hey ! Something I still find confusing is the left hand ! How do you choose how to change notes ? Im not sure how this happens and I tend to play by linking both of them haha as you play it feels like you just randomly change basenote. I guess there is a lot of 2-5-1 but I dont always see it so..
Hi Noah, So when we use diatonic chordal voicing triads in a song, we are not thinking of extensions or alterations, but just the chords of the scale with inversions of triads being determined by the notes of the song at the top? Am I getting that right?
Yes that's right. It harmonises the melody (the note at the top) with diatonic chordal voicings. I think he was right to also talk about inversions in the same video, as another technique that you can mix it with, because in my opinion diatonic voicings cannot always work (you have to use your ears). Especially on the first beat of a chord you want to emphasise the actual chord, and an inversion will achieve that (since you're playing the chord, not some extra notes). but then within a chord using diatonic chordal voicings is great (or other voicings that are not triads, as he mentioned, as long as it sounds good). But I think there are points where you want to highlight the harmony, and be more restricted to the chord. That's why mixing is always good.
Boy that transcriber is annoying and misleading. Like it displays a F Sharp in the E flat minor chord which obviously should be a g flat. I guess it's because the visual transcriber references the key of C. Can you change that so it spells the voicing correctly?

Hey you’re very welcome. I know how that can be and have experienced that myself to an extent. Glad you’re finding this stuff helpful!!
the happiest part of this video for me is being able to truly keep up!!!!!

Teachers like you are a blessing , thank you!
If there were more pianist in the world this guy would have over a million subs. Great teacher and material, thank you.
😃🙏 thanks Lou!
The octave voicings sound a lot like the stuff Errol would play in his right hand. It’s a really nice airy sound. Thanks for this wonderful lesson 😎!
Very true, Richard! You’re welcome 😃
Awesome ❤️ Thank you ❤️
Yes, yes, magnificent my friend thanks you
Most helpful piano I’ve seen i a minute

So glad you like it and that it’s helpful!
This is very helpful. I see this as the road to getting that Erroll Garner sound!
Glad it helps!
Every video has so much great information and breaks down what I’ve learned for a while in a much easier to understand way. You are amazing
Thanks so glad you’re getting a lot out of them

Dude, ur vids are my main resource for new piano techniques or just anything new and interesting so I can stay learning and make new music!
Definitely studied Errol Garner for this video. He’s one of the Goats 🐐. Awesome job!! I hope to add this to my study ✊🏾
Great!! THANX
Amazing lesson. I got one of your packages a few months back and it’s been enormously helpful in my playing. Thank you for your quality work!
Great concept! 🔥💃🏼
Very nice and interesting. This approach sounds much like Bill Evans (subscribed)

Thanks Noah.. another great tutorial. So much useful info in there to work on I'll be returning to it a lot!

Very useful techniques and very clearly explained!
Noooooooah wow thank you this really helped me!! Thank youu
And honestly your mistakes and rusty parts are encouraging me to go through the mundane bit of the actual practice 😂 👍🏽👍🏽
Hey so glad it’s helpful! Thanks for the comment
👍 awesome
Brilliant ! Just what I have been looking for !
Thanks Trevor glad you found it!
Thanks for the tip and the lesson! I loved it!
Amazing stuff man, thank you so much.
my brain is melting
Nice
Great, educational, even spiritual, sound-wise!
Wow Noah, your videos continue to impress me. So fluid, well put together. I've learnt so much from you. Thank you!
Hey, you’re welcome Julian! Thanks for the comment
Do you have a video of how you get your live piano keyboard camera so accurately framed in the scene?
Some nice sounds - reminiscent of 'locked hands' technique. Puts me in mind of Hoagy Carmichael. Wondering, though, if I wanted to thin out the voicings, what might be a good approach?

Great video as always man! However, I have to ask... why are the undersides of your fingers blue?🤔
Hey Noah, when playing octaves , diatonics in the right hand, my problem is "sloppiness" how can I improve this?

@@WoodyGamesUK Thank you for answering my question! Excellent explanation. : )
Is that a technique ?
That means may be one day i will do that ?
You will if you practice!
Pro tip; actually feel something.
