wow - just randomly came across this lad just a picking an a sing away - made my day and I'm sitting here with man flu but feeling better for listening to the blues lol thanks for a great upload, from the Scottish Highlands
Alonzo, I'm a few years older than you (I think) and just started studying classical guitar after 50 years playing blues and folk, nearly as well as you (but not quite). Like you I wish I had made a "real" study of the guitar decades ago. But it's not too late. I'm doing it, and I'm loving it. And it's very good for the brain as you begin to age. Please don't consider it too late, man. You won't regret it, I promise, and it gives you something more to do in your elder years, as there is unlimited repertoire for classical guitar, all skill levels. I'm practicing more than I have for years, and like I said, I'm loving it. It improves you all the way around. Whole new dimensions in guitar playing. Yep, have to learn to read music, but it's worth it and not too bad once you get into it. I'll preach this to anyone who will listen: study classical guitar! You'll never regret it no matter what your age, no matter what your musical interests. Like you, Alonzo, I loved Leadbelly. Had a 12-string for years, and was playing Fannin' Street, Silver City Bound, DeKalb Blues, John Henry, etc. I also learned by playing along with Dave Van Ronk records. Backwater Blues, Black Mountain Blues, Come Back Baby, etc. Met him once (Main Point, Bryn Mawr, 1965) and told him he had taught me guitar.
No matter Alonzo, that's a song that I played some 20 years ago because I'm not only musician but I'm also hydrologist...Congratulations for your interpretation.
Well, I didn't wake up this morning... Just kidding. ;) Amazing performance! Played this once during my piano lessons. But Blues sounds best with a guitar.
@Wolta I appreciate your interest and even more, I appreciate your being a good sport, but yeah, um...I learn it by ear. And never play it the same way twice. I do regret not having learned to be a reader of music back when I still had enough brain plasticity to do it, but oh well. Can't have everything!
Danke sehr for all that, and I guess my main vocal influence here is Leadbelly. I think "improvise" is indeed the word you mean, though I'm sure I could "improve" on my solos if I practiced more! Thank you once again.
Aargh!!! Enschuldigen Sie mich, bitte! I accidentally toggled the thumbs-down icon. I have to wait a day until I can fix it, but I will, and danke sehr for your comment.
Danke sehr for that, but I don't quite know how to show how it's played beyond playing it, which I did, on this video. I wouldn't necessarily play the same things if I did it again anyhow!
@winnipoo1 White folks can sing blues. Young folks can sing blues. Anyone who can understand and relate to being down can sing 'em, and that's a big category with a huge bunch of people in it. But thanks for your praise!
@TheDawisu Thank you for that! I've had almost entirely supportive and positive comments, though a couple (which I have deleted, being someone who believes nobody has an automatic right to criticize others' work publicly) have been angry and contemptuous of my not being "black" enough or "poor" enough or "country" enough to perform this song. Musical purism has always been ugly and sad, and purists live in an artistically constricted world.
Well, not really. Ein very kleines bisschen! And I bet even that isn't quite right, but anyway. And that's TWICE TODAY I hit the wrong icon. I'll fix it tomorrow, I swear!
@DieDeiflVomHof: well, I first heard Leadbelly sing it when I was 15, so I guess it's taken 47 years to get it to this point. I suppose I had it pretty well nailed by my early 20s, I guess.
Thanks. If I knew how to do tab, I guess I would. But I've never used it, and this particular performance was, like always, whatever I felt like playing at the moment.
+Daniel Deutschen Thanks! Sorry to say, I can't help you, never having used tab and not really knowing how to tab this out; it was a spontaneous performance anyway.
I started playing in 1962, at age 15. I've known the song since those days, from an album of Lead Belly's Capitol Records session in 1944; and as for memorizing how to perform it, I never did; I never play it the same way twice. What's on this video is improvised.
just doing my music homework ;)
Simply excellent
All I can say is ............... wow ! you make playing the guitar look SO easy.
( ANOTHER standing ovation) :)

Well, thank you. Never have really cared much for my own vocal tone, but surely I'm blessed if others do!

Geile Stimme :D cooler typ
@Gamesgamer1337 I've used all sorts of keys and tunings on this song, but it's normal tuning on this performance, in E positions capoed up 3.
Gut!
@letterli Thanks. My guitar is a Martin DC-Aura, which is kind of a D-41 with cutaway, pickup and more bling.
Gut;) Nice;)
wir habens euch in der schule gespielt
aber deine version is richti geiol
wir auch! :D
Also: Don't worry. Leadbelly himself probably started with "Smoke On the Water."
Danke sehr for that, but I don't quite know how to show how it's played beyond playing it, which I did, on this video. I wouldn't necessarily play the same things if I did it again anyhow!

teach the tab it`s your duty everyone wants to play like that
Thanks. If I knew how to do tab, I guess I would. But I've never used it, and this particular performance was, like always, whatever I felt like playing at the moment.
I'm pretty sure the answer is "I Learn it by ear" but do you have any tabs? :P Otherwise I'll just look at this video and try to learn it :)
make a tutorial pleaseeeee, thx in advance
what tune is it you use is it the normal guitar tuning or an open tuning ?
any tabs avaidable? would really enjoy them

for how long have you been playing the guitar and how long did it take to memorize this song?
