RIP Bugs, one of the greatest ever. I first saw Bugs in 1971 at a free Nitzinger concert at Lee Park in Dallas. I was amazed to see they had a girl playing the drums, not real common in those days. Here she is again back playing with the Bugs. I could go on and on with stories about the times I've seen Bugs but I guess I'll just say thanks for all the memories. I just wish I had seen him playing more. Same thing with Stevie Ray, I saw them both about 7 or 8 times, not nearly enough.
Saw Bugs play at Sneaky Pete's and the Bijou in Dallas when I lived there in the early 80's it was a 3 piece both times if I remember right. Watching this video I had forgotten how great he really was and I have never seen a guy play with 2 slides at the same time that was great as well.
First Band I saw when I moved to Dallas. Had a couple of guys sit in with him that night. SRV,Delbert and Jimmy Vaughn, The Brewery (85) cannot describe what that was like. Must have seen bugs another 20 times after that.
Last time I saw Bugs, I was living in Angel Fire, NM. He headlined Red River's 1st blues festival. We talked about all the times I had seen him in Longview, Tyler and Kilgore. We had a nice visit. Rest In Peace, Blues Man.
As a nineteen year old Vietnam vet, just back home in Oak Cliff.I first heard Bugs at the Cellar at Commerce and Central in Dallas. Now I'm an old man and Bugs is still kicking ass. I've jammed with his bass player Kieth and that guy can do things unreal. Kirby Kelly is fabulous as a solo act on acoustic slide and great vocals. I gotta see those guys together Live.
I had the privilege of doing sound for Bugs a few years back at Deep Ellum Blues in Dallas. He was a gentlemen and easy to work with/for. Got him to autograph my LP copy of At Last too! He was a Texas guitar legend that will be grealy missed.... RIP Bugs.... Heaven just gained another great guitarist for their band.
I saw Bug's twice got his autograph one of the greats Kirby Kelly no slouch either both of them ripping it up saw this lineup twice had a keyboard player the first time the second no keys still was good I was sad when I found out Bugs passed away Rip Bugs Henderson
As your #1fan from Palm Springs California (now in Montana)... I have all of your CDs except for the "Floating Head". I very fondly remember the couple of times I talked to you on the phone. There's a very large hole in the Time-Space Continuum since your gone.
Saw Bugs in Wichita Falls, TX a few times. He was kind enough to autograph a Strat that a club owner allowed me to bring in. I still have the guitar and it just became that much more valuable to me tonight as I just learned Bugs passed some years ago. RIP.
I met bugs a long time ago in the restroom of the Texas cafe better known as the spoon. It was midnight and I was complaining. I said who is bugs and when is gonna play? He said son son let me reel in this snake and will see. He blew the place up.. thanks bugs. R.I.P.
Decided to check Bugs Henderson out because I am a huge Dimebag Darrell fan and I know this is one of his influences. Its always interesting seeing were particular parts any guitarists playing comes from.
Got to see Bugs damned near weekly when he was guitarist for the Cellar's house band in Dallas in '68 - '69. Hell that's the main reason we went . . . well that and watching the occasional drunk or just showy girl strip onstage.
I used to drink with Bugs when he played ant the now defunct Pearl's Oyster Bar in Austin, Texas. Now Joe Bonamuso has filled Bug's legacy and taken it to where it needs to be. Unsung legends that ARE the real deal.
Pearl's didn't take reservations, but we brought so many with us when Bugs played, they'd reserve tables for us. Man he would put on a show! We probably ran across each other there. Also saw him play the band's sweet sixteen gig at Poor David's Pub over on Lower Greenville, in Dallas, and at The Waterworks in Waco. Man I miss Pearl's. Best ettouffe and rice and beans in the world!
Kirby, if I knew anything bout' the blues when we were kids kickin' it around for fun I would have said lets forget this rock stuff. I didn't know anything and still don't..lol
Bugs was the happening thing on Commerce at Central across from KLIF at The Cellar. That was in Dallas,1969. A great place to be after 13 Months in Vietnam.
Being from Dallas, Bugs played a big part in my early influences on guitar. Rocky Athas too. Bugs was great to listen to even though I never was able to see him live, only on the January Sound studio jams that went on late night on Q102 or was it 98FM? Anyway, in my musical travels, I got to play at Robin Hood Bryan studios in Tyler, and even recorded a few tracks with ex "mouse and the traps" keyboard player! RIP Bugs!
Yeah, man. I got it right on my favorites list. Have you checked out guitarslinger groups at yahoo? It's all about Johnny...You sound like you might like it! DL
...Thanks for that sweet memory, Ronnieguitar99 ; -- could this excellent drummer possibly be THE, as mentioned by John Nitzinger when introducing Texas Blues/Jelly Roll at the Mar y Solo festival in Puuerto Rico ( search: 09) Texas Blues/Jelly Roll - Nitzinger @ Mar y Sol Festival for video , "...Fancy Spades world renowned female drummer of distinction on the percussion section..." ?
..Halloween night, I'll drive 5 whole miles to the B.A.C.A. clubhouse in Olden...where BUGS will be palying...HELL YES, it's gonna be a good night, packed tight, in a tiny venue...
I'm sure that Bugs is a great guy and the music is beautiful. Where are the Black Blues men and women in the blues bands? It will be a great day when we all can just play and just be. My question disturbs me, but I see the pattern so often. The music is so deeply buried in the lives and sufferings of Black people and the music dies a slow death. Each group should do their part to keep Black people connected to this music. A tree torn from its roots will soon die. Peace!!
That was really mis-leading,"MONSTER",lol! Tad Hillin didn't show/play anything special, boring tone! It was your typical bar band playing for some spare pocket change, plus it was very Jazzy! Obviously, you loved it,...it just didn't do it for me.
Bugs is the definition of stellar and integrity. I wish he were still here cuz I go see him again!

No matter how many times I come back to listen to this, it brings tears to my eyes every time.

Always loved Bugs, not just for his fantastic guitar playing, but for introducing me to Kirby Kelly; one of the best slide guitarists on the planet.
