I don't know if you talked about it and I missed it, but in 999 there is a huge difference in writing between Adventure mode and Novel mode. You don't notice it at first, and the game has habit of switching you into the Adventure mode, but Adventure mode has significantly worst writing. Many people in the remaster are playing the worst version of 999, and I've noticed in your video you've been playing using the ADV screen...
Adventure mode is basically exposition mode, literally "tell, don't show." Without spoiling anything, in Novel mode you would get something like "With a twisted grimace on his face, he slammed the table with his fist, and then wordlessly left the room." In Adventure mode the sentence would be rewritten to: "[Junpei]: 'Did you guys see that? I can't believe he just angrily left the room.'"
The rewrite was done because the developers wanted to make the game feel more action-y. Why spend three sentences on painting a picture of an angry person, when you can just say that "they're angry" with one sentence, right?
Anyway, Novel mode is basically the original DS script, and the superior version. If anyone reading this still haven't played 999 and is planing to, then I must implore you to play in Novel mode at all times.

As someone with prosopagnosia I will say, not completely accurate. But not horrible representation. Could be better could be worse.
There are different levels of prosopagnosia. I have a more mild version where u simply cannot remember or picture faces in my mind. When I look at a face I see a distinct face. However I do not remember what that face is once I look away. Even my own face gets forgotten once I look away from a mirror or picture. Some people, which I’m guessing it is in this case, might see faces as all being the same.
However, just swapping clothes wouldn’t work. Especially if this guy has had prosopagnosia his whole life. Most people with prosopagnosia develop ways to cope with having it. There are many other ways to figure out if someone is someone else. First off, hair. None of the hair in this game is the same. It would be very easy to tell that the hair was different. But other things such as body type/shape, skin color, defining features (glasses, scars, moles, etc.), voice, and even smell can help someone be identified.
If he had time to murder he would have had time to figure out that he was going after the wrong guy. St the very least he should have noticed afterwards. If the guy screamed while dying (as he probably did) this guy should have recognized that the voice was different. Not the voice of Snake.
Prosopagnosia isn’t about the whole person, but the face. The big mix up is when you have two very similar looking people. Or when someone you know is in a place you wouldn’t normally see them. It may have been just a few hours in the game but I feel like this guy should have been able to at least tell that the guy he murdered was wrong. Or easily tell that Santa and Junpei were “pulling his leg” because that’s NOT HOW IT WORKS. Santa has completely different hair and features from Junpei! Sure when he looks at them the face would be hard (if not impossible l) to recognize, but everything else would be!
Of course I can’t speak for everyone’s experiences, but based on both my experiences and the experiences of others I have talked to, this wasn’t a super accurate representation of Prosopagnosia.
I’m glad that it was included and it wasn’t horrible representation. But I feel it could have been a bit better.

@@Sherkel it’s a good question! It does affect me pretty much the same way. I do find animated things a little easier to tell and I typically don’t mix up characters. But I can’t draw them from memory. I’m worse with tv shows though. Or anything live action. Thank you so much for your input as someone with prosopagnosia! The voice thing also occurred to me too, since I’m someone who is a big fan of voice actors. Even if he wasn’t familiar enough with Snake because he only has heard his voice for a little bit of time, he knew the other CEO guy really well and even if it was disorienting to have him appear suddenly in a place he didn’t expect he should have at least known there was a difference even if not immediately recognizing the voice.
The same can be said with Santa and Junpei, but I’m more inclined to give that one a pass because the trick that Junpei caught him in was not him not recognizing Junpei. He did accurately recognize Junpei, but he was using the wrong thing to recognize him with. Instead of talking about the fact that they look nothing alike, he immediately needed to “prove” he was Junpei by talking about the bracelets. But that still doesn’t explain that Ace didn’t even try with other physical properties not connected to the face or clothes. Please feel free to correct me if i’m wrong but people with prosopagnosia can see differences in hairstyle/colour and skin colour (at least on the body), right? So he should have at least pointed out that Junpei has darker hair and is more tan than Snake.
Still, even if it’s a little contrived I liked the twist about Ace having prosopagnosia, because I hadn’t heard of that condition before. And even though Ace was an awful person who decided to kidnap kids because he wanted to use the morphogenic field to work around his prosopagnosia, it felt like it was less about his condition making him a bad person and more about how Ace is a control freak with too much money who couldn’t accept that his condition meant that people had an advantage over him, ie., his ego is the cause of his evil, not his condition. So as you said, not as bad as it could be.

    16:20
To be fair, in 999 if I recall it's mostly a few people doing all the math in their heads, Lotus is a coding genius, Snake literally doesn't have a better way to do math because he's blind, the others are responsible for the game and already had years to think about what combinations would happen and who to give the bracelets to and just had to spit out what numbers would and wouldn't work. Junpei uses a notebook he conveniently has which Clover also borrows multiple times, Seven doesn't do math, he's just like "I wanna go in this one." and 9th man is dead before any math happens, Ace isn't present in most of the math scenes for one reason or another, and when he does do math he's got multiple reasons to be good at it between running a company, being smart enough to invent soperill and ya know... designing the game itself. So the only "normal" people in here are Junpei, Clover and Seven and they don't do much math in their heads... 9th man isn't normal.
In my opinion as a math person myself who may or may not have been doing math in my head the whole game, they made the math a lot harder than it needed to be as well, instead of just counting and looping at 9, they were like "okay, so we got 7, 8, 5, 6, and 1, so that's 28, so the digital root is 2+8 which is 10 and the digital root of 10 is 1+0 so guess that means we can go in the number 1 door" which is really dumb to do especially in your head, I thought when they brought up different bases they would be like "oh, the digital root is like base 9 if you replace 0 with 9!" because that early into the game I was doing the math that way, and then it didn't happen and they just kept doing the math the clunky way

    • @Chaos-vm7cy
      @Chaos-vm7cy 2 месяца назад +6

Don't wanna sound like a math nerd but 7+8+5+6+1 equals 27, not 28.

I wish they kept the color detail from the first game in someway to the other games.
In 999, they use a certain graphic a lot with the Transmitter (Red) 》 Receiever (Blue). There are five characters who can access the Morphogenetic Field: Clover, Snake, Akane, Santa, and Junpei.
Clover was in the Nevada building, a Transmitter. As such, her character is designed with reds and pinks in mind. Her brother Snake was a Receiver. He was designed with blues in mind, in both Present-Day and 9 Years Ago.
Akane, 9 Years Ago, wore a pink sweater and red tie, as she was a Transmitter. Her brother Santa wore a blue scarf, he was the Receiver. However, in Present-Day, Akane wears purple, a 《mix》 of red and blue, because she Received info through the Morphogenetic Field from Junpei, who wears a red flannel and blue vest, he is both a Transmitter and a Receiver.
This is such a clever character design choice that I would've loved to see played with in Junpei and Akane's appearances in the other 2 games (like if his bolo tie was red or if his shirt was more purple than black).

So when I was playing VLR, I was really, and I mean REALLY, bothered by Clover's writing. I was so annoyed at how much dumber she was compared to her past self in 999. Clover had actually been one of my favorite characters in 999 *because* she was so weirdly smart at times, which seemed to contradict her appearance and demeanor, and I appreciated that contrast. But in VLR, she seemed dumb as a box of rocks in comparison, and it was driving me nuts.
Luckily for me, at that time, I was also reading a number of my dad's favorite science fiction books, and I had started a book called The Legacy of Heorot. Heorot's story is much different than the Nonary Games (really, it's more a retelling of Beowulf), but it follows an expedition composed of brilliant scientists and geniuses, who put themselves into deep freeze before embarking on a long journey lasting hundreds of years to reach a remote planet in another solar system to start a colony. One of their problems, though, was that when they finally got there and unfroze themselves, they found themselves unable to comprehend their professions as well as they used to, and some of them were *significantly* dumber than they were when they left Earth. Turned out, the deep freezing was flawed: it was supposed to freeze the cells of their bodies quickly and uniformly, such that the cells would remain intact... but cells don't want to remain intact when getting frozen because the water inside wants to expand when turning into ice. And so despite the deep freeze being quick enough to freeze ~most~ of the cells before they could expand and burst, it didn't catch all of them. So the expedition, quite literally, lost brain cells while travelling in deep freeze, and now they were trying to get a colony going with like, 30% less brainpower than they had at the start. Neat (and terrifying) concept!
So when I got to the part in VLR where it was revealed that Clover had been put into a deep freeze, I was like "Aha! That's why! She seems dumber because she IS dumber!" In retrospect, I seriously doubt that was the reason behind the change.... I think honestly, Clover's drop in intelligence is really just because the writing between 999 and VLR got worse. But that concept from Legacy of Heorot gave me enough copium that I was able to finish the game all pleased as punch that there was an "explanation" lol

I think an important thing to add about the remaster of 999 is that due to the ability to ignore “novel mode” with all the prose, is that a whole bunch of additional repetitive lines were added to be voiced.
This leads to an experience where when playing on “novel mode” you will see a lot of repetition between what Junpei is thinking and then saying as well as other quirks which bog down the writing and its pacing. This of course, coupled with the reformatting, make an already confusing situation less comprehensible.
It’s a shame but with the quality of life, VA work and availability of the steam version still make it the best option for new players.

I totally get why people don't like the remaster, because being able to see both screens at the same time throughout the experience is actually important for the end bit.
They could've made what was happening more explicit in the remaster in a handful of ways, but the really cheeky bit can't really be emulated...
    ***Spoilers***
Like, c'mon, turning the DS upside down? That's the most WarioWare ass shit, I loved it.
Also, more spoilers, and it's really not important, it's just something from the logs. Phi was actually also sent to the same time as Delta and then that Phi was sent *again* to 2008. So there were 3 of her. There are also some subtle hints that the Phi that was sent to 1908 is 2008 Phi's adoptive mom, but it could be anyone and it wouldn't make a difference.

someone told me about the “youre always zero” when going through ZTD. his mistake! i figured out the twist as soon as he said it, and i hadn’t even played in Q-team yet! then i figured out the Q twist with the “enter Q’s real name/you cannot commit suicide”. i also got the sigma and tenmyouji twists in VLR. anyway. i love this series and its a lot of humor and i love how it plays with what it means to be a game.

Wait this only came out 3 weeks ago? I just barely finished Virtue's Last Reward, but I beat 999 on the DS a year or two ago and absolutely loved it. Cool to see you make a video about this series! Time Dilemma is one of the most confusing stories I have ever read, but I love it. I'm also the type of person whose favorite Sci-fi movie is Primer haha, so that makes sense.

You know, while playing Zero Time Dilemma, I had this theory that Eric was Zero from another timeline, and there was a substantial amount of evidence to actually prove it... Then the game revealed this alien with purple eyes and I just stood there baffled for a good hour or so. Even if the clues were there, Delta kinda soured the experience for me, more so because objectively his character would be SO incredibly suspicious and that's the real reason he was hidden.

How reductive. It wasn't just the final puzzle that made 999 fans dislike the port. It was the redundant changes in the writing, the ugliness of Novel Screen, the final plot twist not making much sense if you only play with ADV Screen, the bad voice acting, Junpei constantly talking to himself, and lots of other issues

The Theseus Ship thought experiment determines your mindset on identity. If over time you replaced a ship piece by piece until all pieces have been changed with different ones, is it still the same ship? One answer can be yes since the ship is identified as its entirety. Another answer can be no since none of the original components are present meaning it is fundamentally a different ship. It is considered a paradox because both answer can be considered correct depending on how you view the question itself.

Also, i wanted to know Santa's age so i looked at his wiki and Somehow. Scrolled through it without seeing his real name . I dodged so many bullets when it came to spoilers with 999

4:36 Never7, the game shown here, is its own can of worms entirely. If you read it it becomes very obvious that Uchikoshi wanted to create a time travel sci-fi thriller but was contractually obligated to make a dating sim about college girls on a beach. So it ends up being this bizarre mix of both but he clearly put more effort into the sci-fi stuff.

Some RUclipsrs playing Danganronpa spoiled me the twist of Zero Sr's true identity in VLR; and yet, that game has so many twists that I was caught off-guard on most of all the other reveals (even Tenmyouji's identity, as some of his poses reminded me of Santa).
Thank God for ZTD's bad animation, silly-looking models and dumb plot-twist; because it tried so hard to be dark that it would had ended up as a misery-fest otherwise.

My friend recommended this series to me, and I bought all three games, and I rank them by how they are ordered. TLDR: Play the games, they are fun in their own right, if you get stuck never be ashamed to use a guide for help.
The creativity and puzzles and character models were top grade. It didn't try to go unreasonably out there, and kept to a general narrative. In which interactions with all the characters were a treat. The twist ending with Akane being the villain was awesome.
VLR was great story wise, again adding on to the concept, but instead changing the terminology for no reason. It had a flair in being a story where you got three separate stories, that connected back to one idea. You had the over arching Zero the Third threat, but also a bomb threat, escape from the bunker, and a murder mystery. They each went well together making a lot of the stories feel fresh, and it needed that with how many endings their was. The 3D models were on the goofy side, and made me miss the old 2D models. But they have a flair that reminds me of older games. I had a blast with the reveals, until old lady Akane was an accomplice. Does this lady love murdering a small group of people?
ZTD is a decent game, and I would have put it off longer if I didn't watch two thirds of this video. I was expecting the hat trick where they reveal Akane did it again, and thank god that wasn't it. I was a little miffed by the nonlinear story telling, as I had unlocked all the death options. So keeping a straight storyline was very confusing. When I figured out what the narrative wanted, I liked it. I wished the characters interacted more instead of being in set groups. Carlos's group was a downright favorite. Diana came in second as Q team was just there. The world logic just didn't logic, when you through a bunch of word soup and hopping it sticks. I would have believed a lot of out comes happened because each lead character had residual feelings from the morphogenic field from the previous option. The thing that gets me is that we don't get a wrap up to Sigma's storyline with a few words or even an animation, and the escape room puzzles are gone long before the game is over. It felt like a waste to toss out the bread and butter of the series before the game finishes.

I haven't played Danganronpa. I watched someone else play but I don't think I could stomach it myself. It was just gross to watch sometimes. The plot was really stupid and the bad guy controlling Monokuma felt way too edgy in the cheesiest way. I forgot their name. Despair Lord or whatever.
