  • In today's episode, we're installing the MaxxECU Street in the FP71HTA powered Evo 8. I've been thinking about installing an aftermarket ECU for a while, and we finally make it happen. We'll cover installing a new IAT/O2 sensor, setting up the new ECU and getting started on the tune.

Did you use just a standard bosch IAT?

I'm using the very common GM IAT

I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant with a 2.4. I am having a problem with getting the EGR and CAT monitors to set. There are no fault codes, and it idles too high. The base idle screw is all the way in, and idles at about 1,200 RPM. When connected to a diagnostic scan tool it shows the up-stream O2 sensor going crazy trying to adjust for an air leak. I did a smoke test on it, and the only place it showed a leak was at the throttle body throttle shaft.
I went to the Works company and bought a set of turbo throttle shaft seals from them. I installed them, and it still idles to high with the up-stream O2 sensor going crazy. I am at a loss at what to do to make this car run right. I have already replaced the MAF, EGR, EGR control valve, both up and down stream O2 sensors. .

Sorry to hear all of that, seems like a pain. Few other things I would check -- is the idle speed valve performing normally? Has it been replaced? What about the throttle cable? Can you confirm the throttle plate is shut when your foot is off the gas pedal? You could also check the TPS value at that point, i.e for Evos the spec is a reading of 13% at resting position IIRC.

@@supercarmio Is the idle speed valve the Base Idle screw? Throttle cable is adjusted correctly, and throttle plate is closed. Currently the TPS is set a where it came from the factory, and I have not moved it. Does the TPS effect idle speed?
When I took the throttle body apart to install the new throttle shaft seals I marked the TPS location, and reset it there. There could be a problem with the Throttle body throttle shaft bore being worn out. I can shoot one side of the throttle body with carb spray, and the idle comes up. Even after the new shaft seal install.
How do I check TPS? I have done it in the past with a Volt meter, but there are no specs for a Mitsubishi I can find for that. There is no info on old Mitsubishi's period it seems There is a ton of info on Muscle cars (old and new), and Pick-up trucks (old and new), but not Mitsubishi's. You seem to be one of the few people on this planet that has much experience with Mitsubishi's.

@@christophersanders5007 So from my understanding a failed TPS could have a failsafe to allow more air to bypass the throttle body via the ISV. You should have an ISV btw, separate from your screw: www.maperformance.com/products/oem-mitsubishi-idle-speed-control-2003-2007-multiple-fitments-1450a069?gclid=Cj0KCQiAsoycBhC6ARIsAPPbeLvSqJnOZgqYvB22bpJwqh08DyCwWO0noZrjxQOgVOyytp1X4CqnyogaAgU3EALw_wcB
Also, I believe some code readers that can display live values will be able to show the throttle position. Otherwise, it looks like Evoscan also works on any Mitsubishi according to this chart: evoscan.com/product-comparison/

@@supercarmio I may have fixed the situation. I went and got another TB from the junk yard, and installed new shaft seals into it like I did with the original TB. When I started the engine the idle was normal. The next thing I am going to do is adjust the TPS to .45 - .5 Volts at closed throttle, and then readjust the air bleed screw then that should have everything back to normal.
You could be right about the Idle Air Control (IAC) or TPS because the junkyard TB came with all those sensors, and they could have been good while one of my old ones was bad which is why my car is idling normal now.
