    Such a great video. It may have been a one way conversation but I enjoyed the company. Listening to some of the parts of your journey connected me to the hobby even more. Based on this video, it seems you and I have a lot of similarities in what makes us… us.
    Very inspiring and just what I needed as I look at my diode laser and a bunch of black foam core board that’s been sitting on my shelf for what is way too long.
    Thanks for the company while I had my morning coffee. It was a great way to kick off the day.

      I really appreciate that. I wanted to see if I could add value while I was away from the shop and answer a recurring question in a way that was interesting.
      I’m glad to have kept you company. With any luck - you’ll enjoy some of the upcoming stuff as well.
      Thanks for your comment. Dust off your laser - and get building!

    Keep it simple (build),
    keep it flying (with just enough positive angle of attack). :)

      Which do you prefer - plastic gear or metal gear servos ?

    • @usefulaircraft
      @usefulaircraft  Месяц назад

      I’ve pretty much gone all metal. Plastic gear servos work - but they can be prone to crack a gear in a rough crash, where the metal gear ones tend to hold up better. Bear in mind - most servos if you tear into them have plastic gears inside - so even the metal ones can be broken. I just read the reviews, and buy mine off amazon - usually in packs of 10 or 20 at a time. They’re relatively cheap - and I love building a lot of different things with them - so I always keep spares on hand - so I go through them every few months or so - but it’s better to have a spare or two than lose a weekend flying because you’ve got one bad one.
      Thanks for your comment.

      I don’t do well with idle time - this may become a thing when I’m on the road.

    I know the feeling of dumping hours into a build and watching it crash into more pieces than hours I put into them. It sucked and I did it so many times with my printed planes till finally getting one in the air. Tbh I need to get into the foam board builds cuz I tend to crash a lot too, unfortunately I like to haul ass through as many gaps as possible hahah 😅

      I’ve been with you on the frustration of watching that plane go to pieces. And I may or may not have flown some gaps myself - not always sucessfully.
      And don’t get me wrong - I think 3d printed planes are awesome - I just can cut one faster than I can print one. Both have their advantages and their advantages - and the dudes that design some of the 3d printed planes are really skilled with some of their designs.
      I’m just a huge fan of stuff you can make, and the creative folks bringing new things into the hobby. Keep building, keep making, and keep printing.
      Thanks for your comment.

    Around 35 years ago' I also built my first RC airplane. It was also the Wanderer. Learned to fly with it. Patches all over that thing. But it flew like a dream.

      They did fly nice, mine just didn't fly very long sadly.
      That style of build was more art than anything. Just beautiful.

    Do you plan on making a video on this hex you mentioned? I’d love to hear about that.

    • @usefulaircraft
      @usefulaircraft  Месяц назад +1

      I may. Right now it’s just more parts and a slow burning build, but I’ve got to clear some space and get some other projects out of the way first. Once I have the time and the bandwidth, I’ll keep y’all posted. It may be a month or so - but I’m excited about it. Thanks for your comment.

      @@usefulaircraft I’ve been working on a hex for a while now myself. Even seeing the design that you went with would be interesting.

    Great video, when I look at a chart for the KFm family I see that the original KFm-1 had the step on the bottom. Now that said, nothing with foam board is going to be a perfect KFm because we don't have much control over thickness when just folding or stacking but it can still be fun to play with and you can certainly get acceptable flight characteristics as you have demonstrated.

      They work remarkably well for their simplicity. I’d love to hear what you build if you start building.

      I just posted my first set. It's a bit of a test, to see how they work for builders, but if things go well, I'll put my other aircraft up as well.
