    We have the garlic chives too, yes there is a difference in shape and flavor. I freeze in the gallon sized bag ( double bagged because it makes our freezer smell like onions at first) Then laid the bag down, as flat as possible. Once frozen I give bag a " squish" and "toss" the * locked, closed bag* on a table or counter to break up most "chunks" return to freezer. Then I can sprinkle as desired when needed. I didn't have room for a pan to spread them on.

    I started garlic chives from seed in early spring this year. It took them like a month before they finally sprouted, and then were growing very slow and were very thin. I started cutting them back once they finally reached about 8" tall. I've now cut them back 3 or 4 times and now they are getting really thick and completely grow back in a couple weeks to over a foot tall, despite 100+ deg. SoCal weather. They are in partial shade.

    Just watched your podcast. Expanding my balcony garden. I live in an apartment home. I have a area of 12 feet by 6 feet. I have double my space using cinder blocks and 2×4s
    To make the rails to have two levels.
    It's has a south exposure. I have great success in growing green peppers, green beans, potatoes, and carrots. I've decided to expand this out, adding chives and many other
    Things like onions, shallots. I've found your pod cast and am extremely happy with your information on chives and storage getting a lot out of growing them.
    I'm saving ,$2000.00 annually not paying grocerie stores for vegetables. Keep.up the great work putting out information helping all.of out here knowing about these thing's were not experiences in like the chives.

I can`t believe there are no wild onions around this area and that nobody ever started them on this rural lot. I`m starting a wild food forest here. People in the future will hopefully appreciate it.

    Hi Kim. I just started garlic and onion chives…and I live in south Florida!!! I didn't realize they are cold weather. Will they do ok if I keep them on the back porch, or just let them go and try again in the fall?

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  15 дней назад +1

      Given the right care, both garlic and onion chives can adapt and grow well in South Florida. Your back porch should provide a suitable environment, especially if you manage their exposure to direct sunlight and keep the soil conditions optimal. If they struggle through the hottest part of the summer, consider them a trial run and look forward to better growth in the cooler months.
      I hope this helps!! CK

      @@CaliKim29 Is that something that repels or kills or both? When I notice it's caterpillar time I go out to the garden several times a day and pick the caterpillars off with tweezers and throw them on the driveway under where the mockingbirds nest. They chow them down as well as mosquitos so I like keeping them fed.

    What time of year do you divide them?

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  3 года назад +3

      Hello PBJ, it doesn't really matter in southern climates, as they grow year round. In colder climates do it whenever they are growing during the spring, summer or fall before they die back for the winter. Watch this vid for more details, bit.ly/CaliKimDivideChivesEndlessSupply.

    Are chives pretty much the tops of green onions? Those chives look pretty big - mine are real thin

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  3 года назад

      Hello JD - No, they are different, although they are both part of the same plant family. Green onions have larger bulbs, stronger flavor, and usually the entire bulb is harvested. Chives are an herb, mild in flavor, perennial, bulbs are left in the ground and leaves are snipped for continual harvest. You'll want to regularly fertilize your chives to help them grow larger, mine get feed every few weeks with Vermisterra Worm Tea and Good Dirt Plant Food (links and discount codes in vid description) Enjoy your chives!

    I think you mean Herbs. It starts with an H for a reason, and the H is supposed to be pronounced.

    • @daisyblooms4813
      @daisyblooms4813 3 года назад

      1. Not sure if you intended it but your tone is quite rude. 2.There are lots of letters in lots of words that are not pronounced. 3. In American English, the h is not pronounced. The h *is* pronounced in other parts of the world.

    • @hollysharvest
      @hollysharvest 3 года назад +1

      Americans don't pronounce the "h" in herbs.
      Edited: I should say that Americans from the U.S. don't pronounce it. I think Canadians might. I should also say that there are a lot of situations in the English language where certain letters aren't directly pronounced.
