Kudos to you Fred, for standing on your principles. The finished bourbons I’ve tried at Whiskyfest did not make me want to buy a bottle 😢
I appreciate the sincere honesty as well as the explanation about finished bourbons. I also like the idea that label it as a whiskey that was formally Bourbon.
Awe Fred thanks for the shoutout! It’s time to recreate some videos 🤌
An honest review is never a letdown! Amburana is not for everyone nor is it done well by every distillery. I compare amburana to cilantro. Either love it or hate it. I really like it but have had several that are terrible (looking at you O&E). Starlight is my favorite and I really enjoyed the Rio. Keep the honest reviews coming!
Great comparison
Loved your reaction to this because now I know I'm not crazy. I called this cinnamon bun covered with honey and give me a traditional bourbon profile anytime over this.
We did a tasting of this over the weekend and we described it as a mashup of a honey bun and cinnamon roll 😂
Completely disagree on the opinion on this one, but I appreciate the honesty. Cinnamon Toast Crunch for me, and it’s nostalgic as hell. On to the next one!
If you don't like it, you can send it to me - I absolutely LOVE that bottle. I gotta be in a certain mood for it, but man...
To me, I smelled a lot more of the honey (I can see your medicinal to a point) and a backup note of cinnamon. On the palate, it was straight Cinnamon Toast Crunch...
I appreciate your candidness and honesty, as always.
I got few bottles left if you’re still interested mate
@@AnthonyKmlBrownhow much?

I’m not let down at all. I think these finished products have been getting over hyped for too long. Appreciate the candid response to it!!
Matt Ward, VP of BS (lol) for Penelope, was out in Las Vegas last week. He said this Rio takes a lot of filtering due to the honey finish. Makes it expensive to make. I haven't tasted the Rio but have another Rye amburana finish that is fun sometimes but one in the collection is enough.
Agree 100%, should be labeled a finished product and not a straight bourbon.
finished bourbon pushed to the point of being a liqueur. not one for purists. but as a dessert drink...pretty delicious if thats your thing.
I'm glad I'm not alone on not liking it. I have a bottle that I don't see myself taking a pour from too often again. . . RD1 was much better as its far more subtle with the finish.
I do not know what the big deal is. Penelope has never been in my wheelhouse, but I do know a lot of people that are very excited about this bottle.
Are there products that you like finished in amburana? I enjoy the RD One and Barrell bourbons finished in amburana. I also have a Rare Character rye finished in amburana that I haven't opened yet. Just curious.
I’m right there with you Sir. The finishing should never overwhelm the Bourbon, only enhance. Plain and simple. Too strong!
I'd love to try this myself, but I completely understand where you're coming from. Loving all the reviews lately. Thank you!
I’ll give you an Amburana note you’ll remember forever especially since you grew up on a farm around horses…it’s Horse and Mane or horse fly spray. Agree with you 100% Fred. Just don’t get the Amburana craze
I’ve been through 5 Penelope toasted bourbon picks and 4 architects and have been disappointed in all of them for the price. But picked up the new toasted rye and that stuff is great
Taste like cinnamon, toast, crunch. It definitely is an acquired taste if you were typically the normal bourbon guy.
I’m with you on it, let people go crazy for not, leave the better stuff on the shelf.
I appreciate the honesty🤣
I appreciate this review I knew this was hyped for no reason
Id advise to have amburana products as last pour. It screwed up my palate for the night. I like finishes where it compliments the whiskey, let the whiskey shine through. Anburana just overpowers everything
It's alright. You do you and i will do me. I appreciate your honesty, as always!
Fred, I’ll stand on this soapbox with you!
Don't like Penelope and I don't like finished whiskeys. Happy to miss this one. Thanks for the review, Fred!
I'm with you Fred! Keep Bourbon, Bourbon.
America!
I agree 100%.
One of the only bottles I regret buying is a Penelope.
I have yet to try any Amburana finished stuff. I'm just skeptical of the new fad and not sure it's worth the extra cost associated with these finishes.
Well you can send that bottle my way I’ve been trying to find one to try it.
I have a bottle of Glenfidditch Fire and Cane rum finished scotch that is completely undrinkable. Chemical smell and taste. Totally get what you are saying.
Could I have the rest of your bottle, I'll enjoy it!
It is what it is. Palates vary - widely. Otherwise there'd be ONE "best" whiskey, and a few others. There are ideological purists, and immature cheap flavored crap lovers. And everyone in between.
I like good whiskey, finished and / or straight. Bourbons, ryes, single malts, American whiskeys...
Drink what you enjoy
And Fred, stick to your honest thoughts and reviews. It is what it is
Have to admit I am curious about the amburana finishes, but I'll try to find a reasonably priced pour in a bar before committing to a bottle, or agreeing with Fred
hype bottle imho seemed really thin to me
This is one of your reviews that I completely agree with. Some of my friends say they love it. I think they are full of shit fanboys. 😅. Thanks for the history of finished whiskey. Cheers
I didn't dislike it as much as you did lol. With that said it's not for me either. To me the bourbon gets so lost in the finsh they might as well slap a fireball sticker on it! 😂
Thanks for being honest. I’m not a fan of jaeger either.
💯
Raise your hand if you knew Fred wouldn’t like it from the jump. There was no way with all his talk about labeling finished bourbons that he wouldn’t allow his self to like it. It was classic foreshadowing.
That said, I don’t love Amburana finished whiskey either. Just too weird.
Today on bottles Fred’s going to gift…
The audio level in this recording seems extremely low. Listen in my car and can barely hear at normal to above normal sound volumes.
Could it be a generational thing, the distaste? I think a lot of the younger generations (not to age you) have come up on finsihed products and I would say a lot of the younger folks love 'em, seek 'em out and might I even say is their bag vs a pure bourbon. I could go either way, but I think this is product is exceptional, which I didn't think would be the case. 7.5oz later on my bacehlor party final night, I was phening for this more than I could explain here
I'm not a fan of Amburana finishes. I have a bottle of RD1 and just can't get into it.
Lol, I hate cough syrup. Definitely doesn’t bring up good memories. I’d have to try this one before buying to see for myself.
New Bourbon Name: “Penelope “BO” 😂 Manly-Musk Aromas.
I love the RD One Amburana, but I agree with Fred, not a fan of this one
Wonder if you like Churros or Cinnamon Toast Crunch. That’s what he smells like to me. Maybe you like those but not in whiskey form.
Anyone who hates this, feel free to hit me and I'll gladly trade it off your hands haha
Is it Dead Cat 🐱 💀 Bad???
Thanks for that honest review. I dont get what the fuzz is about on this one? Nose full of eucalyptus, almond and honey. Palate is the same...so overwhelming. Honestly all that comes to mind is the piss pucks in the 🚹 urinals. I can't even call it potable. 🤮 Least I know I'm not crazy...thanks Fred! Your face btw...priceless 🤮🤣
Honey*
Wait. Did i mispronounce?
Left the y off in the title
@@FredMinnick Big fan! Just wanted to point out the missing letter in the title. I appreciate all the info you provide in your reviews. Ive been collecting for a few years now and watch the majority of your reviews on bottles I may be able to get my hands on. Keep up the great work Sir
Never heard of it. Just another bourbon the average Joe will never get a chance to taste.
If memories of being a sick child, locked in a room with nothing at your disposal - except for cough syrup that your parents are forcing you to drink - is your thing, then this is for you. Lol. Oh boy, Fred, you and Club Marzipan better hope that barrel pick is full of whiskey and not something from the septic tanks over at Penelope.
hate to laugh at your pain, but your reaction was classic...
I don't like it. 4 times.
Lol I laughed out loud at the face he made.
