  • "In 'Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown,' Charles Wesley merges his own faith struggle with the story of Jacob’s literal wrestling with God at the Jabbok river. Holding on with a fierce resolve, the speaker demands to know the name and nature of the elusive being with whom he grapples, and midway through the poem, both are revealed to him as Love." - Victoria Emily Jones
    This one's a bit out of left field for me due to the religious nature and story. I generally don't feel comfortable performing spiritual songs and hymns, due to both my lack of belief as well as my limited understanding of scripture (I was confirmed in the Lutheran church but I may have a better grasp of Protestant history than the Bible itself).
    That said, if I had to pick one single favorite song, it'd almost certainly be this one. As exquisite as I find the melody, the poetic lyrics are just as entrancing, even if I did need a breakdown to understand them. And it seems actually quite appropriate that of all the religious songs that might resonate, it's the one about struggling with faith that grabbed me.
    I need not tell Thee who I am,
    My sin and misery declare;
    Thyself hast called me by my name,
    Look on Thy hands, and read it there;
    But who, I ask Thee, who art Thou?
    Tell me Thy name, and tell me now.
    This is one of the many I've picked up from Tim Eriksen, whose style, delivery and repertoire is a constant source of inspiration.

    Every vid of yours that I watch, I learn a ton. You have a great gift for teaching no doubt underpinned by intellect and knowledge - the best base for teaching IMO.
    Granted, my trad base is small compared to yours. So I am entertained and taught. It doesn’t get any better than that!

      That's so sweet to say, I appreciate it! It took me a long time to feel confident or comfortable teaching, but it's something I'm really passionate about now, so thank you!

    I really enjoyed this hymn. I like the pieces you choose and also learning about the backgrounds of your material choices. The drone of the shruti box really adds to the mood of this hymn. Does the shruti box have any keys on it? When I first listened to this, I thought you were playing a concertina.

      Thanks so much! It doesn't have keys but rather little paddles that stop each hole, so you can have multiple open or switch them midway, but it's not as easy and seamless as a key/button.

      Even the demons are spiritual. You need more than spirituality, you need Christ Jesus, who is the One who has been crucified and now has triumphed far over every power, dominion, authority, and name. His is the only name that can save us from the wrath to come, and it is by faith in His name that we may find forgiveness of sins.
