The FEF-3 is actually programmed to break if it reaches above 140 MPH. For it to have broken mid-race means that for some time it exceeded 140 MPH, quite impressive for such a big old steamer.
Some things I would like to mention is that the 844 does actually have a higher top speed on level track. Something did happen with 844 in this video, but I’m not asking for a rematch. 844 also had to slow down much sooner because it weighs more than double the Mallard, Mallard being 104 tons and 844 being 223 tons. I’m just happy this race happened even if my all time fav engine lost the race.
Basic engine physics: -Larger loco with larger wheels= longer acceleration rate -Larger loco with large wheels at high momentum= more speed -Larger loco with a lot of momentum= Longer stopping distance And whatever happened to 844, I'd say she blew her steam chest. The wide open throttle with probably the most minimal of valve cutoff increased the steam chest pressure which was too much.
It wasn't because of the pressure, it was the speed of the pistons and rods - the 844 was designed for 120 mph, but it's modelled so that at more than 140 mph the gear and pistons start to suffer damage. and eventually things like the valves, packing glands, lubrication, etc. fail.
Grand Junction Model Railway it’s a design flaw with the engine. In the end, 844 would’ve won, but it exceeded it’s max speed (mallard did the same thing on its speed record run) all 844 had to do was exceed the limit of Mallards speed and hold it, but that’s not how the program works in the game. I believe in real life, 844 could more than likely beat mallard. If not the T1 5550 definitely will
8:14 Mallard: *coughing* Good God! What happened to you? 844: Ow! I think my pistons have burst! I'm not used to these speeds, but I think it's now taken its toll on me. I guess it's back to the works, again. *The 844 feeling very sorry for himself* Mallard: Oh well. You bloody surprised me when you overtook me, I'm still shocked from your overtake. But I must say, you're not looking good at all. Do me a favor and don't race at those speeds again. I'd hate to see you end up in the scrap heap. 844: Thanks, Mallard. Though still, all respect goes to you. You really impressed me with you're insane speed. Well done, Mallard. I hope we'll get to race again in the future. Mallard: The sooner, the better.
Mallard ran 126 in real life, but they had a problem with overheating the 3rd cylinder, infact right after hitting 126 they had to shop the mallard due to damage
The 844 takes longer to speed up and slow down because of how much heavier it is. This test also shows that the 844 is capable of higher speeds than mallard is, but since it was designed to withstand a max speed of 120mph it cannot run at those speeds safely.
Shame train simulator doesn't have Class J #611, as she was the pinnacle of American steam technology and was designed to achieve speeds similar to Mallard.
844 would've won if she didn't slow down, she has over twice Mallard's horsepower and tractive effort, as for in real life top speeds the Union Pacific never recorded it so it remains unknown, the FEFs were built to handle to 120 mph so that's a rough estimate. Also, I can say for certain that she didn't break.
james bradford No it doesn't. The Mallard class' top speed is only 94mph. The Mallard did 126 because it went down hill when it set the record. Also, the Mallard broke down when it ran that fast because it wasn't built to go speeds over 95mph. FEF3's did over 100mph on average in passenger service back in the old days and have a theoretical top speed of 130mph.
Plus, the FEF-3 was designed with engineering tolerances to allow it to operate safely at speeds of 120mph. There are unofficial accounts of engineers on fast mail trains running at 120mph or more to make up time after delays. They could also do that with much heavier loads than the typical trains running in the UK. The train that Mallard was hauling when it broke the record (and going downhill) was the equivalent of less than 6 lightweight UP passenger cars. The UP named trains that the FEF-3s hauled would have around 12 cars, sometimes as many as 17.
james bradford It's not faster and I'm not making excuses just because I'm "American", these are pure facts. No other class of British steam engines could get up to 100mph, except the Flying Scottsman. And first of all, I'm not even American, dickwad. Second, the Mallard can't do 126 on even level track, it could only do 94mph. You're just as ignorant as all the other British steam engine fanboys I've seen, if not, even dumber.
james bradford A train that isn't streamlined does not affect its top speed asshat. The Mallard did 126 going down a fucking hill, dumbass. You should also try and fix your grammar before arguing. 4:13 you can also see the firebox glow from the outside on the real 844! You should do a race betwen UP 844 and Evening Star (9F)! both were the last steam locmotive built for their respective railroad companies!
Mallard may be the fastest steam locomotive in the world, but our *44 has got something Mallard doesn't. Style and beauty ^^ Not to say Mallard's not a good looking engine, she is, but 844's is a sigh to behold as well ^^
The cylinder didn't burst, 844's steam chest blew. The pressure in the cutoff valve built up because of the minimal throttle input and caused the valve to blow. The 844 would have been fine if the Steam pressure was lower.
The 844 had stimulated to much damage to its pistons and cylinders due to excessive speed or going over 140 mph and since it had stimulated so much damage its stuff to make it work started to fail like its steam valve
5:27 844: Right! No more Mr. Nice Engine! *It's pistons have burst* Mallard: WHAT! But how! How in the bloody hell did he do that?! That's impossible! 844: Goodbye, Mallard! No offense, but you're too old to race a American beast like me!
Luke Heichlinger i have personality done train simulator tests and (if in not setting things up wrong) mallard is complete garbage that is out preformed by both Challenger and Big Boy
Mallard would of won anyway, it's the fastest steam locomotive ever. Your clearly just some dumb yanks who is jealous because the British won (Btw I'm Irish)
NeilTheBoxTankEngine the only reason Mallard is the fastest in the first place is because it was going down a damn hill! Plus the center cylinder failed while it was doing it. Union Pacific 844 on the other hand was designed for 120 mph but only got up to 110 mph when it was on fast mail trains back in the 40's 50's and 60's
What looks like happened with the 844 is the packing got loose and started leaking steam out of the Cylinder heads. This happens when there is too much pressure to the cylinders and causes steam leaks. The 844 would have easily beaten Mallard and in real life it actually could but Mallard still holds the record.
you know what i've been meaning to tell this for a long time about why the American trains are failing to win against the British locomotives. It's because the American trains are alot heavier than the British locomotives and take a longer time to stop, while the British trains are light and can stop in just a few seconds while American trains take minutes to stop. This is why i've been calling all your races unfair and i think you should change your rules so that they have to cross a certain point instead of whoever stops first is the winner.
So if you guys don't know since the 844 was designed for a max on 120mph and she was modeled that if it went 140mph or higher then her pistons and cylinders would start to stimulate damage and when to much damage was caused by the amount of speed the 844 was going at her safety value, packing glands and every thing else started to fail so she slowed down (I only know this cause the man himself smokebox which is the one who coded, modeled, and designed the 844 for this game said what I said but shorter so yes to the comments that say her safety value maybe to burst but failed she did not release steam from her pistons if that was they case she wouldn't have slowed down)
Class 43 VS P42DC, just to settle this for once and all. And then you basically have all e-locs, steamers and diesels fight against eachother. The colonies VS the motherland
844: Because it was the first to stop, not to make it to a certain point first. And if you considered that role, I definitely would have won and don't forget I weight over twice your weight so I have to slow down quicker. Mallard: Ah
6:24 844: Ow! Owwwww! Goddammit! My pistons have burst! Oh my god! It hurts so much! Ow! Mallard: And I'm in the lead again slow coach! Daylight may have beaten me, but now I have triumphed! See you at the finish line, old timer!

Do one we’re it is the Union pacific 844 vs big boy
hey lazerjet you haven't heard the Japanese bullet train vs the mallard
UP 844 at 5:23
MURICAN MUSIC INTENSIFIES
5:15 The Union Pacific 844 was just pushing through.
How do open a route to show all of your locomotive
How about a little interesting, can you make your version of the great railway show race?
The Mallard has defended its title as the world's fastest steam locomotive!
What makes mallard so fast?
Do A Race With All The Trains Of Thomas And Friends
Império Pré-Histórico i agree
Next race could u do 844 and 9F
Can you do the panier tank vs the 14xx
You know that Mallard is the fastest steam engine in the world because it was literally going downhill during the test.
yup and that's what makes me hate Mallard.
Luke Heichlinger i have personality done train simulator tests and (if in not setting things up wrong) mallard is complete garbage that is out preformed by both Challenger and Big Boy
There in Train Simulator 2020, the Kenny the UP 844 had false speed it rises up to 180 kph!
LaZeR JET,please do a strenght contest! Which loco can pull more?
I'm curious, could the 844 if given the chance to beat the world steam locomotive speed record? Could it possible achieve that?
You should do 9F vs Class 7
AllTrains51009 0 I think it was called f9 not 9f
Penka Genova an F9 is an American diesel engine.
Can u do TGV vs mallard
UP means Union Pacific?
can you do the tgv vs the acela express
Mallard won only because 844 was bigger and needed to start stopping earlier
Exactly!
Trublemaker12 it is Minecraftxbox08
FIRE HOUSE PIZZA um hi
Mallard would of won anyway, it's the fastest steam locomotive ever. Your clearly just some dumb yanks who is jealous because the British won (Btw I'm Irish)
NeilTheBoxTankEngine the only reason Mallard is the fastest in the first place is because it was going down a damn hill! Plus the center cylinder failed while it was doing it. Union Pacific 844 on the other hand was designed for 120 mph but only got up to 110 mph when it was on fast mail trains back in the 40's 50's and 60's
Mallard: yes im gonna win
844: hold my beer
This is my theory: british trains are faster, american trains are stronger
Not a theory it’s a fact.
@@Johndoe-jd Well that it true
Can you do mallard vs Big boy?
Can you do the 844 vs city of torru
Its possible that 844 broke a safety valve or broke a piston
Can you do flying scosman vs the union Pacific 844
Can you do UP 844 VS City Of Truro!
Em is that the yogcast music at the end?
They use that for there old vids idk if they still use it
What looks like happened with the 844 is the packing got loose and started leaking steam out of the Cylinder heads. This happens when there is too much pressure to the cylinders and causes steam leaks. The 844 would have easily beaten Mallard and in real life it actually could but Mallard still holds the record.
Can you do another race with 844 vs city of Truro please laser jet
you know what i've been meaning to tell this for a long time about why the American trains are failing to win against the British locomotives.
Do Union Pacific 844 vs. Flying Scotsman
its the blower
This is me
I love the big boy, but the Challenger is the biggest steam train that is running currently.
Can you plz speed test the 844 and the 261 if you can get that one plz
So if you guys don't know since the 844 was designed for a max on 120mph and she was modeled that if it went 140mph or higher then her pistons and cylinders would start to stimulate damage and when to much damage was caused by the amount of speed the 844 was going at her safety value, packing glands and every thing else started to fail so she slowed down (I only know this cause the man himself smokebox which is the one who coded, modeled, and designed the 844 for this game said what I said but shorter so yes to the comments that say her safety value maybe to burst but failed she did not release steam from her pistons if that was they case she wouldn't have slowed down)
844 definitely broke herself, steam was leaking out of the front and back of both cylinders.
Class 43 VS P42DC, just to settle this for once and all.
And then you basically have all e-locs, steamers and diesels fight against eachother. The colonies VS the motherland
Well, UP 844 has 3,500hp but is twice as heavy. Mallard has 2,400hp but is smaller by far. This actually was a pretty tight race.
you should do the pump car vs the pump car
Thats not the cylinder cocks open on the 844 to make the steam come out is it?
844 historically has been called faster than mallard and is considered the fastest steam train in history
Damn 844 looks like its breaking the sound barrier
AURRGGGGGG!!!!!!! 844 IS DA BEST!!
WHAT?!?!?!?! MALLARD IS THE BEST!!!!!!! (in my opinion)
FIANLLY! I BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mallard: Im fastest and best
844: im not even streamlined and i overtook ya
Mallard: but i still won
844: ...
Mancanics to the rescue
Hell I remember tearing through the east coast in a prr t1 with 32 heavy weight Pullman at 157 mph for 30 miles non stop
Oliver, I would like for you to do another diesel race but this time do an American diesel race
The next race should be a bunch of E2's. That'll be cool, for sure! :D
MAGIC BUFFERS MAN
That speed....I would die from that speed tbh
UP at 5:15 : he wont catch me, when i shift into maximum overdrive
Can you do mallard vs bittern
Both of them broke down lol!
Really are you sure about that if you are... I am going to faint, just jokin'
lazer jet you know the fan mail you got from nz
it was from me
This is like shooting star is coming through
Yeah how DO the physics of this game works?
