Don't kid yourself, they've already got it.
So, I'd like to point out some things that less tech-savvy people most likely missed, as someone who does have a significant amount of tech know-how. There's two things that jump out at me as being EXTREMELY problematic. Both have to do with the whole localconfig.vdf situation.
First of all, the fact that Tim Sweeney said 'we don't like using APIs' is something that should immediately be a red alarm to anyone tech-y who even knows what an API is. For those who DON'T know, what an API is, here's the basic gist- an API is essentially just an interface third-party programs can use to easily communicate with each other. They have defined protocols that streamline the exchange of information. (This is not to be confused with libraries, which are also mentioned on this subject, and are separate pieces of code used to supplement your own- not wanting to use THEM is completely understandable.)
To put into context what all that means, imagine a piece of Software, let's say Steam, is a big ol' building. It has multiple APIs for various functions; these come in the form of official, protected, monitored entrances that can direct you easily and safely to wherever you need. By saying they 'don't like to use APIs', Tim Sweeney is essentially saying Epic doesn't want to use these official entrances and instead want to use one of the hidden, much less protected and unmonitored maintenance entrances. That sounds a lot like their goal is less communication and more infiltration, doesn't it? Shady as fuck. Now, this could be a miswording on his part, but I HIGHLY doubt it. If it was, we probably wouldn't be seeing localconfig.vdf being accessed at all.
EDIT: A point was made regarding the subject of login tokens, and I ended up deciding to retract this part; it's not likely your Steam account could be compromised (albeit to a limited extent) with the information in localconfig.vdf. I'd still be a bit concerned about OTHER services accessed through the Steam client, but ultimately this point is much less of a big deal than I made it out to be. My apologies.
Needless to say, I've uninstalled the Epic launcher, and you really should too. This shit is shady as fuck.
Yeah, even EA/Respawn use the Steam API for adding Steam friends. The localconfig file has way too much sensitive data to be freely accessed by a third-party! There's a reason Facebook is always updating its API and closing down workarounds people find for it - it's a safety and privacy matter.
Thanks
Uninstalled it,and two games under it just now. Thanks. Spooky sht!

Seems like Epic went down the drain as soon as they phased out Unreal Tournament.
They announced they were cancelling development on the new Unreal Tournament Alpha (which had been in dev for years) right when they announced their new Epic Games Store. They said development was cancelled so more employees could focus on working on the storefront and Fortnite, lol... pissed me off as a long time Unreal Tournament fan. I often played the Alpha over the years and it was really fun, one of the only modern but old-school style arena shooters left out there. Now every other thing these days is hero-based and/or battle royale it seems... even the latest attempt at Quake they tried to turn into a class/hero-based version of it, sigh (I know Quake is different devs, but I'm just saying in general.)
@@DeathBringer769 agreed. Played UT3 religiously, and tried UT4 a little bit 2 years ago.

If it was only the hashed id of your friends on steam that are to be sent to epic why the hell don't they parse the json files they extracted to keep only that?
And by the way, "we're trying to not use Steam API because of security and privacy" HOW THE HELL are you going to access Steam's database without going through their API....manually?
That's called an SQL injection and is actually illegal since you're accessing data WITHOUT the permission of steam and WITHOUT restrictions and security measures put in place by steam's API.
I have a bad feeling about this...
Also the hypocrisy of talking about valuing security and privacy, then purposefully annihilating your own user's security and privacy by doing deep scans without their permission and taking their data without knowledge or consent, lol. Steam at least asks before doing a hardware scan, or before doing a software scan for already installed games. It's hilarious Epic is lecturing about "oh, privacy and security" when they care about it much less than even Valve/Steam does. It's just bullshit, hypocritical excuses from Epic.
That's not what SQL injection is, and it isn't illegal anyway. If reading data outside of first party API's was illegal then anything non windows reading USB drives would be illegal.
API's are standardized libraries of code for accessing a "design standard and protocol", among other things, but I was thinking more along the lines of accessing the FAT or NTFS file system data. You have, however, indirectly pointed out why not using a certain API is not "SQL injection". The Epic software may not have used Steam's API, but it did use the operating systems API. It's less structured and requires more effort, but it's more flexible. Even the phrase "security measures put in place by steam's API" is nonsense. If your security measures can be bypassed by simply ignoring them, then you have bigger problems. Steam's API isn't a security feature, it's a _convenience_ feature.
"accessing private data of another company's customer without their explicit consent IS illegal" - How so? Illegal where, and under what law? I'm a customer of hundreds of companies, many of whom are privy to the same private data. This is a program that a person willingly runs on their computer accessing a file on their computer that it is allowed to open based on the permissions set by the multitude of security layers that are available to a user to secure access to sensitive data.
How would you even go about writing such a law? Why would you want to? It would make developing software of any kind a legal nightmare and would only hurt free software and smaller shops that lack the legal teams to deal with such a heavy handed law. What you run on your computer is your responsibility, and no others. If you don't want a program accessing a certain file, then you already have the tools to prevent it. Wouldn't you rather use those than hire a lawyer and spend months litigating?
@@michaelkreitzer1369 i'm thinking back to when everyone got mails from everywhere about "we've updated our privacy policies" because of the GDPR that was passed in the EU. maybe the collection of data from people without them knowing it falls under the illegal category?
plus, the only reason people found out about the data collection was when people discovered that their data was being collected, which requires the installation of the software. the way Malware is successful is because a file was downloaded onto the computer and was executed. to my knowledge, the only thing keeping Malware away is knowing what you download, and since MANY downloads on the internet can be faked and presented in a "legit" way, it can fool the unknowing. just look at the countless download buttons there are when browsing Pirate sites. the same goes for anything software related that's harmful to overall security.
a lot of people were fooled into downloading what they thought was a new games platform and later discovered they had downloaded chinese spyware bullshit. you can only prevent a security hazard from entering your system if you know what you're dealing with, and at that point it's a conscious decision and totally on you if you already know the risks associated with it. they target the ignorant because they don't know any better.
All that road map shows is how underdeveloped the epic games store is compared to pretty much every other platform, for crying out loud they don't even have a God dam shopping cart feature!!

Now imagine that same phone starts locking down phone carriers like verizon and at&t to exclusively work only on their phone for one year forcing you to use their underdeveloped phone? They would be sued into oblivion in no other industry would this type of exclusivity be tolerated so why do games have to just roll over and deal with it?

This (stealing data and snooping) is a VERY common practice in china. So much so people I have talked to about it just shrug it off like, "well, its normal, so?" Even things like Flash player (chinese version) will pop up with adds on your screen whenever it likes, other programs and apps (even for phones) just take your information. Since all the competition is blocked In china the people have no choice but to use those apps or programs.
My point? well 40% of Epic is now Chinese, owned by Tencent, a company known (in china at least) for taking users data and turning games into pay to win. I only ever used Epic to play around with the unreal engine but I don't even want that on my computer now.

As a gamedev myself, it makes me upset that this is the route that the industry has taken. It's always about how much money you can crank out and almost never about exploring innovative ideas and just having fun with what you create.
I'm glad at least a few people out there are still sane about this Epic store crap. I get that people feel Steam has a monopoly on the market, even if they don't ACTUALLY (because there are quite a few other distributors out there, not to mention any publisher freely able to start their own distro completely independent of Steam, even setting their own exclusivity parameters if they want to).
The simple fact is that Steam built this shit. When people like Tim Sweenie were writing the PC platform off and consoles were taking over the market, Steam more or less single-handedly took up the torch to move PC gaming into the next phase of its life (digital distribution) and to keep it relevant on a larger scale. It obviously worked. Steam has never been perfect and myself and many many other people hated it when it first came out but it has put itself into a solid position as the premiere PC distribution platform from a time when PC gaming was deemed "dead" in many circles.
Now everyone says Steam's greedy for standard profit sharing. Now everyone's saying Steam's a monopoly because people are invested in the platform, even when more and more publishers are branching out to use their own platforms instead of Steam. If you want people to be interested in a new platform you have to give them some reason to be and showing up out of the blue to shove money in developers' faces to force consumers them onto your inferior platform, all the while undercutting consumer confidence at every turn is NOT the way to do it.
It's not a matter of loyalty towards Steam because I never cried for having to download Origin, or Uplay; I buy games on GoG, I've supported developers more directly through various indie projects and what not. I do however respect the fact that Steam played a huge part in helping to build the thriving PC gaming ecosystem we have at this point in time and I kinda resent some other company showing up late to the party and trying to bully their own piece of the pie and dictating how Steam should run their business. Epic had every bit as much of a chance as Steam to get into the market before Steam rose to prominence in it.
TL;DR -- Steam ain't perfect but I'll pass on having Tim Sweeney as my savior from it. He's dishonest, disingenuous and not the sort of person I want to do business with.
But...but...Muh competition!

It should be a red flag that Epic released a currently inferior launcher, proceeded to aggressively make games exclusive to their store and then being neglectful about privacy. Epic Store was never an option, it was a attempt to take games made by other publishers and lock it to a single location so they run the entire market; it's like consoles but worse because it can run on any other program just fine. About the "Roadmap" bit, don't believe anything about it. Epic is notorious for creating roadmap tasks (on their trello), and then they just let them sit there for years.
You can look at the Trello for the Unreal Engine 4, the trello is full of tasks that are many years old and are clearly abandoned, and they just keep adding things to it (usually what's "hype" right now, like VR, or what will please their big industry customers).
All those cool features they are "planning" are likely just in there as marketing PR, to make the launcher look better than what it is. I wouldn't be surprised if not even half of that is going to be implemented in 2 - 3 years, based on how long it takes them to implement crucial features into their engine or marketplace (e.g. security features, or basic search features).
Exactly.

It's pretty clear why they are securing exclusive games for themselves. Their actual store is barebones early access and there's zero reason to use it. So they are trying to force everybody to use it. Such heavy handed approach might work in a short run, but every game they take away is another bunch of people swearing to boycott them and the publishers going along with this nonsense.
Things like this are exactly why piracy exists. If you don't want people to buy your games and make it harder for the people who do, then they won't buy them...
"Piracy is a service problem; not a price problem" - GabeN
That makes a lot of sense who knew
The Chinese are known for making things really cheap since all companies are connected to the government. That's how they reach their tentacles out, and the US companies are all too willing to toss peasants to the side for money.
