    My 2 cents, the company that owns/operates the ship skimped on maintenance and the ship was pushed into the bridge by the wind and the current/tide. That’s why we have the Infrastructure Bill. A lot of critical US infrastructure is really old, and Congress and the States have long put off spending money to renew it. There always seemed to be something more important. At some point old infrastructure and bad luck coincide, and this happens. Or a train derails, or a truck fire collapses something. Maintenance is important - it’s tempting to put it off or skimp on it, and you can get away with it for a time but sooner or later it will catch up with you. And it’s usually a lot more expensive to fix something that breaks than it is to keep it working. Planned preventative maintenance ain’t sexy, but it is what keeps everything moving.

    Five minutes after losing power isn't enough to get tugboats and reverse the engine, which will take 30 mins to stop the momentum of the ship. This is like in the Titanic movie or real life.
    The question is how this ship lost power. How do you prevent this type of accident from happening in the future.

    • @neilharrison7555
      @neilharrison7555 2 месяца назад +1

      NO! It does NOT take 30 minutes to stop that class/size of ship. They were at maneuvering speed, so 7 to 8kts max. From ahead maneuvering to stopped "dead in the water" would take approx 8 minutes MAXIMUM, probably less. That night the wind speed was 35kts, which when the ship lost forward propulsion would have blown the "Dali" to her RIGHT side, i.e. towards the Key Bridge pylon. Let's all just wait for the NTSB/USCG to complete the INITIAL investigations, to getan accurate picture of what actually happened.
      Each individual ship has, by Regulation it's "Operations Manual", ("ISM Manual") which has sections on things like who does what on the Bridge and in the Engine room, with specific sections dealing with Arrival and Departure from Port, operations when under Pilotage (remember "Dali" had TWO Chesapeake Bay Pilots onboard) procedure for maneuvering in Harbour Waters. The list of scenarios is almost endless. Also, there are written down instructions of Responsibilities for individuals to carry out under various scenarios - in essence, everyone should know WHAT to do and WHEN to do it and what NOT to do in various scenarios.
      The Preliminary findings will be interesting. The FULL findings will take some time and will, I am sure identify "root cause" as today's jargon would call it.

    • @user-qs4yi9lb3i
      @user-qs4yi9lb3i 2 месяца назад

      Uh...no that is not correct. Multiple maritime experts and engineers have said the mass and velocity of the ship would have destroyed those barriers and still hit the bridge. While they may have decreased the velocity side of that mathematical equation, the mass was always going to win. Physics is a bitch. The bridge was a truss design . Think of your house roof trusses. Take out a support wall and the entire roof comes down. Most of those experts also say had she hit any other type bridge design there still would be significant catastrophic damage.

    • @Goldsteinphoto
      @Goldsteinphoto 2 месяца назад

      @@user-qs4yi9lb3i Maybe. But if you look at the shape of some those barriers it is quite possible it could have diverted the path of the ship if struck at an angle.
      Plus, since the bridge support did stop the ship, a strong enough barrier can be built.
