Ballochmyle Rock Art, Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland.
East Ayrshire holds one of the most remarkable ancient rock art sites in Great Britain. Near Ballochmyle viaduct and just off the ‘River Ayr Way’ walk is two vertical sandstone walls which are saturated with ancient petroglyphs. It is likely our Neolithic ancestors carefully choose this location and painstakingly carved these fascinating glyphs which still survive in excellent condition.
The site is also known as Ballochmyle Walls and well known for red sandstone quarrying. In 1986 the two panels were exposed by estate workers clearing the vegetation. Over two large rock faces is many many ancient petroglyphs of mostly cup marks, these are the most common symbol, some of these cups are surrounded by a ring others have multiple concentric rings. A few cups have gutters or channels radiating from the centre.
Similar designs can be found all over Scotland especially in the Kilmartin area or various locations in Dumfries & Galloway. The indentations may have been coloured in as evidence of colour pigments have been found at other sites.
A few out of place glyphs here is a Deer and a circle with spokes radiating out from the centre. The carvings are likely Neolithic or Bronze Age making them circa five thousand years old. It is possible some carvings are from various time lines. It is not unusual to find similar cup marks at stone circles or standing stones.
What is unusual about Ballochmyle is the Rock Art is on a vertical surface, other petroglyph sites are on a flat or sloping rock outcrop. In April 2015 a laser scanning survey took place. This recorded the rock surface in minute 3D high resolution detail.
The meaning of these symbols is long long lost to us. A few theories are an ancient language, art, maps or nature spirits. Whatever the purpose this area was a very important place to our ancestors. A visit to Ballochmyle will reward you with one of the most extensive prehistoric rock art carving sites in the UK.
Ballochmyle is tricky to find nor is it signposted. The site is situated between the villages of Catrine and Mauchline, on a single track road, just off the A76. You can find the site marked on the Ordnance Survey maps. The site is just a few minutes walk from the minor road with a style and a small burn to negotiate to get to the cliffs.

This looks such a magical place 🙂
It certainly is a magical place, it is one of the best rock art sites in the UK. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, Martin.
I appreciate this channel so much. I can't get back to Scotland fast enough. Please keep up the awesome work and footage.

Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Definitely on the list 👌
It is worth a visit but a bit tricky to find. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
1:11 It looks like a huge smiley face ...with those two gauges for eyes, the rock protuberance for a nose and the gently curved crack for a smile. I wonder if other folks ancient and modern might see this natural pareidolia ?
Yes I see what you mean. Thanks for leaving a comment, best wishes from Scotland.
I think this face would appear to come alive and speak, when in an altered state of consciousness. Possibly the reason there is so much art about?
Is there a place we can view the scan that was done?
Thanks Martin , was looking forward to this video, and it did not disappoint. I must try to find the lazer scan images , to study the designs in more detail. I will be visiting for sure , first time I am back in Alba. 👍🍀
Hello CC! The site is a bit tricky to find, it is not sign posted, I hope you get to visit because it is one of the best ancient petroglyph sites in the UK.
Another great video and very informative. I visited the site late August. Lovely part of the world.
Thanks again Steven! I was there early August, I have visited this site quiet a few times as I am from Ayrshire, Martin.
Do you know what colours have been found?
Do you mean were the carvings coloured in?
@@BeforeCaledonia You mentioned pigments found at another site, it made me wonder what colours we have evidence for, from that time period.
Brilliant question: I'd be really interested to know too 😊 Also, were they all one colour or was there patterning?
The same glifs are all over the world. They witnessed electrical phenomenon in the heavens and calved what they seen in stone. We can create the same electrical phenomenon in Anthony parats laboratory.....
Hi, Yes! These glyphs are widespread. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
I think in Taiwan they have very similar ones. Of course people have migrated all over the planet so if the ideas went back far enough the diffusion could be due to that or indeed later independant concepts arising without any interaction is a common occurance in many isolated cultures.

Thanks for the info.
