  • The 2010s were an extraordinary time to be in the rail preservation industry. How did it survive its low points? What did it do to stand out from other entertainment and educational venues? Why do people go to such great lengths to make restorations and operations as good as they can be? Here, we aim is to provide a baseline explanation for how this industry works, what it does, and why it is important.

Damn, this was amazing, this is one of the only videos that made me tear up, being a railfan is one of the best decisions i made, though we may be several thousand miles apart, we all live and breathe as one, the preservation industry on that side of the pond is not to dissimilar from this side, as I've said before, we are railfans, we stand united, through thick and thin, we work together for a common interest, trains, it is my hope to get various different steam locomotives back on the mainline over here, and i hope I'm able to do my part, though i may be British, i can still relate to this, because i am a railfan, best of luck to all of you during this decade, hopefully the industry won't die, nay, I'll make sure it won't die over here

Living in Sacramento my whole life, railroad heritage has surrounded me since day 1. My passion from trains since I was a kid grew into a pretty solid interest and understanding of railroading in America, both then and now. I’m now an adult and still have so much to learn, but I’m pretty darn proud to be a part of this community, and amazed at how resilient we are, rising to the challenge in order to keep the railroad history of the US alive into the 21st century and beyond.

In my opinion, railroad preservation is one of the best examples of, if enough like minded people apply themselves to one common goal, the can do anything. There are so many steamers, running and not, that were rescued from the scrapyard and restored to their former glory.
Down here in Oklahoma, we don’t have too many notable locomotives. At our only Railroad Museum, we have a CF7, Three RS3s, an F unit, Two SW1500s, and only a couple more. Sure it’s not too many but every locomotive is one more piece of history saved.

In the last couple of years alone the amount of newly restored to operation steam locomotives all over the country has been nothing short of amazing. In the last 6 months there’s been at least 10 I’ve seen brought back and last year was about the same. Since big boy it feels like restoration has taken off and the fact UP donated 3985, and 5511, and the amount of work in progress restoration projects here in Texas alone is astonishing. Most of the display steamers in Texas I’ve stopped and seen are mostly being cosmeticly restored and if the funding is there to operations. SP 771 2-8-2 that was in Victoria Texas in my childhood is my dream restoration project
