What strikes me in Thiem's backhand execution is how long his weak hand continues to guide the racquet, until very shortly before contact. Only then does it separate and travel back to keep the shoulders in line and avoid over-rotation of the trunk. See frames after 7:22. I guess that he creates so much coil with his take back / straight arm that he feels the need to direct the racquet longer to avoid mishits.
Thank you, great work. I don't think the high backswing is a good thing for intermediate players however. It's a typical clay stroke, allowing the longest course to accelerate the racket head, but it makes it harder to adjust the height of the racket at time of contact. It's a lot easier to prepare the shot at the level you expect the ball to bounce, or a bit lower for a topspin and higher for a slice, and then adjust if the bounce is unexpected...
Great point. I tool believe the most important part in the early stages of development are learning to "find" the ball. Taking huge swings and cuts at the ball diminish feel and control. Once a player becomes more accomplished the strokes, especially on clay, may lengthen. Thank you for your comment! John Frausto
Thanks John I will, this is the first video of yours I have watched, I will check out the other ones you have, hopefully, you have similar ones on the forehand and backhand volley
I think as of now in late 2017 I think he has the potential to win Roland Garros many times in the coming years, though he’s also developed into a great all court player. If he continues to play well, I think he has potential to win quite a few majors. He’s really improved his mental game along with his physical prowess. I’m so excited to see him playing in 2018 and onwards toward the future.
I also believe he has the potential to win a major, Roland Garros is the most likely GS he can win first. If he can stay healthy he could dethrone one of the top 4! Thank you for your comment, John Frausto
Very nice footage and analysis, thank you! So, would you say that when traveling to the ball, it’s best to get to your left foot off at all possible? What happens when you have no choice and land forward on the front ,right foot? You’re less likely to produce as much topspin? What’s that shot called?
I feel that landing on the front foot (going forward) makes it more challenging to impart more spin on the ball. If you truly want more topspin, you must be able to "throw the edge" of the racquet up and across the ball. Your shoulders may tilt back more so to throw the edge more vertically. I hope this helps. JF
Thank you for your comment. The all two hand backhanders for the most part still hit one hand backhands but it's usually with slice. I myself hit with a one hand backhand, I hope it sticks around for a long time! All the best with your tennis game! John Frausto
I still have a one hand , I find the two handers can hit from almost any stance , and get out of jams easier . Almost like it's a cheat stroke to me 🤷♂️I mean they can jump, stay open, close , whatever .
Superb John, many thanks. Question: What do you mean by the hand being "inside" the ball - and then transitioning to "outside"? You mentioned this is true in baseball too? Outstanding stuff.
Great analysis, thank you! I think he can win any of slams but needs more variety in his game and to display less negative emotion on court, channel it into the next point.
I agree. I just watched the Women's 2018 Australian Final and both Caroline and Simona have implemented exactly what you have said into their games. It's not as easy as it may seem. Thank you for your comment! John Frausto
Unfortunately I don't have video of these two players. I am thinking about ways to do analysis with these up and comers. More to come! Thanks for your comment! John Frausto
Topspin Tennis Thanks, I'll make sure i check back in. As a one-hander, I'm in hog heaven with all of these young (Thiem, Dimitrov) and next-gen (Shapovalov, Tsitsipas) players with beautiful and varied one-handed backhands. I love watching your videos, as I am self-taught. I find them very helpful. Keep up the good work. 🎾
Hè has to go that high with his arm to generate power just because his arm is stretcht , hè has to start at bounce while Federer can wait till raise of THE ball , so Yes its different in preparation and timing I would not teach iT that way to beginners or recreation players Will hè win a grand slam , well if THE 4 big once stop playing hè has posibility
Thank you for your comment. I agree with you and not teaching this to juniors or beginners. I like to keep the the stroke simple and efficient in the early stages. Thank you for your comment. John Frausto
Great video, even if it's still difficult for me ,tecnichally speaking. Anyway i have a question for you :) :who has the best one handed backhand between Federer, Gasquet , Thiem and Wawrinka. I'm talking about the efficacy of this shot and not only about the beauty; i think Wawrinka has the best one but Thiem is very close to him , but this is just my opinion and i would like to read a comment of an expert like you ! :)
yes he can win a major and my bet is that he will win 2 or 3 when the "big 3" start to slow down, he has a big chance to win RG if Nadal slows down, clay is his best fit for his style.
Topspin Tennis so it’s true that professional players tend to switch grips (example eastern to semi western) on the type of ball that’s coming and shots they want to make?
Topspin Tennis By the way, the answer to your question “can he win a major at the tour level” I think was answered this weekend. Yes, he can! Making it to the final of the French Open (6 matches in a best of 5 scenario against the top players) is proof that he can win a Masters 1000. The question now is whether he can win a grand slam title.
honestly, I do not think he will get a grand slam title because djokavic is to good and will not stop, theim might have a chance later when its just zverev and other young stars
1:32 "Can Dominic win a major?" 2019 says "yes"! Thank you for the video - great analysis of his technique.
That "yes" is already a reality at the US OPEN 2020.
Nadal vs Thiem at US Open yesterday was the best game in recent memory..Thiem will move to #1 and stay there for a while..amazing backhand !!
Could you analyze Denis Shapovalov's backhand?
What strikes me in Thiem's backhand execution is how long his weak hand continues to guide the racquet, until very shortly before contact. Very detailed observation. Thankyou sir👍
Thanks a lot for sharing this video it is great to watch the shot in slow motion and your commentary on the technique is amazing
Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Look for more videos in the future! All the best, John Frausto
Thanks John I will, this is the first video of yours I have watched, I will check out the other ones you have, hopefully, you have similar ones on the forehand and backhand volley
You bet. I am headed to the Western and Southern Open on Wednesday. More videos to come! Thanks for your support! John Frausto

You are welcome. Thank you for subscribing! Enjoy your day! JF
I saw that match against Thomas Muster and Dominic was so impressive. Dominic will definitely win GS's.
Celine, wow...good for you. I would have loved to watch that match. It was the changing of the guard for Austrian tennis! JF
Very nice footage and analysis, thank you!

what kind of grip does Dominic use for his backhand?
Thiem is using an eastern backhand grip on his backhand. Thank you for your comment! JF
Wrarinka opens his chest more than Dominic and especially earlier. Good analysis. I love Thiem.
Thanks for your comment. Interesting observation, thanks for pointing it out! JF
Yes he can win a major!! Us Open Champ 2020!!!! Lets Go!!!!!!
A big win for him! JF
I love all the one-handed backhand players these days. Definitely a dying stroke cause everyone seems to play two-handed now.

I need to check it out! JF

what is his back hand grip?
Hi, what would say about his game in 2019?
He was so close to winning a major in 2019, 2020 could be his year. Djokovic is his biggest hurdle at this point. Thanks for your comment! JF
Can please do a analysis on Carla Suarez Navarro backhand ?
Jonlon Smith, Will do. Thanks for your suggestion. John
Topspin Tennis hey when can you
Hè has to go that high with his arm to generate power just because his arm is stretcht , hè has to start at bounce while Federer can wait till raise of THE ball , so Yes its different in preparation and timing

could you also do a wtp player analysis?
I will work on doing a WTP Player. Who would like, Caroline W or Simona Halep? Would like the forehand or backhand or both? Thanks! John Frausto
Great video, even if it's still difficult for me ,tecnichally speaking.
Anyway i have a question for you :) :who has the best one handed backhand between Federer, Gasquet , Thiem and Wawrinka.

Michele Grassi wawrinka senza dubbio. Anche se io includerei pure quello di Gasquet
yes he can win a major and my bet is that he will win 2 or 3 when the "big 3" start to slow down, he has a big chance to win RG if Nadal slows down, clay is his best fit for his style.
He is so close. He has the game, can he put it all together over a 2 week period? Thanks for your comment! JF
I don’t think he’s using an eastern backhand grip. More of a semi western forehand grip for his backhand
It does slide over closer to semi-western grip on some shots. It really depends on the incoming ball and his intent. Thanks for your comment! JF
Topspin Tennis so it’s true that professional players tend to switch grips (example eastern to semi western) on the type of ball that’s coming and shots they want to make?
Dimitrov opens his chest the same at the end of the motion : ruclips.net/video/JtX4keRY9r8/видео.html
Thank you for your comment Team-Tennis.fr! Great pickup.
You are actually wrong about his grip. His grip is not strong eastern, it is modified eastern.
I agree with you, it is a modified eastern backhand grip. Thanks for your comment!
He closes his eyes when he hits the backhand.
Interesting pickup Abelardo! Thanks for your comment! JF
Since yesterday he can
Correct, it's great to see he got his first GS! Thanks for your comment! JF
He never bends his arm at any time, but the downside of such a hammer blow of a backhand is that he can never disguise his slice.
His swing is similar to Henin. So long
Correct, it's how he generates so much power! Thanks for your comment! JF
You said “the video on the left” multiple times for both videos lol what about the video on the “right” 🤣
Good pick up, I need to work on my directions:) JF
His take back kind of reminds me of Justine Henin’s 1HBH
A little bit, great observation. Thank you for your comment! JF

His backhand grip is an eastern/weak eastern grip
not strong. Gasquet and Almagro have strong eastern backhand grips
I think he can win a major. But don’t take my word for it😏
He has won one, he has the game to win more! Thanks for your comment! JF
FED has the GASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
honestly, I do not think he will get a grand slam title because djokavic is to good and will not stop, theim might have a chance later when its just zverev and other young stars
He will win RG tomorrow!
It didn't happen but he is close. Thanks for your comment! JF
Stand sideways!
What do you mean stand side ways? Is it regards to his stance? JF
@@topspintennis yes, 1 handed backhands executed better w sideways stance, and better control of ball direction
Is not the same figure if you look at the face of racket
It 's a short continental grip, and he keep 's the angle between his arm and the racket as close as possible, are you blind?
Ugly backhand but effective.
I actually think his one hander is a thing of beauty....but I do appreciate your comment! JF
@@topspintennis Other ugly but effective backhand: Gasquet's
@@lvargas7306 I may have to do an analysis on his, he has a BIG swing for a little guy! Thanks for your comment! JF
Not ugly at all your nuts for thinking so
definitely. Also Messi can't play football and Rembrandt was garbage
