Yep, that's when it happens, when it starts getitng cold out, which is why it happens in Octember. It's claimed that the damage to batteries happens in the summer with all of the heat under the hood, but the problems don't manifest until it gets cold out.
To measure amps, you have to disconnect one of the battery cables. You then put the meter between the disconnected cable and the battery post. You can only do that to measure drains with the key off as the meter probably only handles 10 amps. If you tried to start it like that, it would either blow the meter, blow the meter lead, or maybe nothing at all would happen.
You'll know when you put a new battery in; if it goes dead overnight or after a day or two then there's a drain, but it's unlikely. Car batteries just aren't made like they used to be. Once you replace it, start saving up for the next one. A dollar a week will give you 200 bucks after 4 years. That's about 14 cents a day. Years ago you could hunt arond pay phones and vending machines and find that kind of money. You can thank the Millennials for getting rid of cash payments at vending machines.
