  • Horrifying images from the BBC camera crew sent back to Rwanda just days after the end of the conflict. The gorilla protectors scour the refugee camps for the park rangers who had been in charge of the Mountain Gorilla research centre. Interesting video from BBC natural history video 'Gorillas Revisited with Sir David Attenborough'.

flea: And I forgot to say that I know a dog who chases rabbits and kills them for fun / sport (the dog does not eat the rabbit). The dog was not trained to do this but does this for fun anyway.

@MsCoolcar I assume you do more than just troll? They are, even if you do not agree with their priorities, doing some good. Being human is about more than just subsisting. They are saving a unique element of the country the Rwandans may in future have the opportunity to be proud of (and incidentally bring income to their country once back on its feet) and that would otherwise be lost forever. David is one of the great humanists of this world, it is a pity you do not see this.

Many animals kill for sport, to compete for a mate, to eliminate a threat to their family or to eliminate the competition for food. Even if some humans kill an animal for pleasure that does not justify forcing 200,000 Rwandans to face starvation. They have a right to hunt for food. It is appalling that some who have food to spare show no remorse for condemning someone else to face slow starvation. Save the whales, let the humans starve. It is too perverse for words.

A cat hunting a mouse for something other than food is called cat and mouse.
What point are you trying to make here?

I don't know anyone who wants to kill all the animals. I just returned from a visiting 3 countries in Africa and there is staggering poverty everywhere. Tin shacks and thatched huts everywhere, even in very congested cities. Their answer is not robbing the rich to give to the poor. The answer is having sufficient work, food and income to make poaching unnecessary for either survival or big profits.

fleafleaflea8 :Only humans Kill for sport....and where did we get the phrase "cat and mouse", if not for sport of it? And when a new alpha male gorilla displaces an aging (or sick) alpha male and then proceeds to kill the defenseless offspring that's somehow better??? And when one penguin pushes another into the water to flush out any hungry seals hiding beneath the ice, that too is somehow better???

Well, i can understand killing a gorilla for food in a matter of starvation, don't necessarily agree with it but in desperate situations i can understand it. But killing a gorilla for sport I cannot tolerate, they are too close to humans.
What next? Hunting and killing humans for entertainment? It cannot be justified. But if for food that can be justified, though i dont necessarily like the idea I can sympathise with the situation of one faced with the prospect of slow starvation.

Your at a safe distance save the animals snobbery says a lot about how you were raised. While you are stealing the food from the mouth of the Rwandan children perhaps you should share their pain and starve with them for awhile. It might cure you of that elitist snobbery.
