Watched this on BBC 2 back in 1995. An epic hard rock band with such a colourful history. They knew they were good but they also had such a great sense of humour.
This documentary is great, these tree docs are hidden gems on RUclips. A generous family member recently bought me all the Rock Family Trees books they're awesome.
I totally believe Nick Simper's playing is important part of their early success. Not only because it was him who suggested Hush, but because of his vivid rocking style. Too vivid for Blackmore's ego I guess.
Only Ritchie and Paicey survived unscathed. Rod and Nick got stabbed in the back, Ian and Roger were both forced to leave, Glenn became a cocaine addict for 15 years, David lost his rock star vehicle, Tommy was given a torrid time from Ritchie's fans and ended up dead from heroin, Jon died of cancer. Ritchie caused most of the problems in Purple, his moods had everyone fooled that he was to be feared, but he gets other people to do his dirty work, the classic cowardly bully. Yes he's a great guitarist, but he got away with murder because the band wouldn't stand against him. Tommy was plenty good enough to replace him, and he was nicer for sure, but drugs and apathy stopped that lineup from succeeding.
I remember as plain as day getting stoned at a friend house the room was all smoked out but I remember him handing me the Machine head album and saying check these guys out, He was the guy who had all the latest albums an always a big bag of weed...I can't tell you how much I miss the 70's and I mean all the seventy's Led Zepplen, The Who, Episode Six, just kidding about episode six but I could go on an on, to bad you don't really realize at the time the fantastic time your having, at the time you're having it, it's always after it's over...THANK YOU VERY MUCH ROCKHERBERT72 for posting this
I hate how Jon Lord threw Ritchie under the bus in this documentary. When he talks about Ritchie suggesting to go for a more soul based sound and replacing Ian and Roger he makes it sound like it was all Ritchie. Jon went along with it all VERY happily, he agreed with getting rid of Ian and changing the bands sound. Ritchie May be a knob but the others were weak and spineless back then.
I wonder if Deep Purple were to be inducuted into rhe Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next year, would Rod Evans and Nick Simper be included? And the late Tommy Bolin as well? Wish them good luck. RIP Jon Lord 1941-2012.

The late John Peel did the narration on this. He championed the band back in the early 70's.
R.I.P Jon Lord..
deep purple is a great song..

So, if it wasnt for Richtie's granny, we'd all be grooving to "Concrete god's in rock".
my how ian gillan evolved from that sugary beginning. lol thank you!
I liked the first family ha ha, I mean, the first Deep Purple as it were, with Rod Evans.
Evan's was a great vocalist, but he couldn't scream, which kinda goes along with hard rock. He sang some great tunes off the first 3 albums.
Seeing Gillan in Episode 6 made me squeal! So funny! ^)))
70е Настольгия Деер Purple! супер Лутьшая группа в мире!
Thanks for posting Dude! Saves me having to do it . .
Лучшие навсегда❤
Pete Frame's trees are everywhere.
Deep Purple sure turned David Coperdale into a rock star he had it down when he formed White Snake
Anyone noticed that "Zephyr" was also on the band name list (3.32)!
Yes I noticed that.
Coincidence: Ritchie's medieval tendencies:
Anne Boleyn/Tommy Bolin. Pretty close.

Episode Six was sure a far cry from what Giiian would become
I got the book Rock Family Trees. I've seen a few episodes on Veoh but I'm not sure if I've seen this episode.
Ian Gillian is one of the best rock singers ...

I think those members should all be included.
RRHOF has never made sense.
What is the name of the song at the beginning of the video
The real tragedy of Mk4 was the death of bodyguard Patsy Collins.
Had they not continued that would never have happened.
Sadly, Jon Lord has joined them :-(
And now both Iommi and Lord battling cancer...........not good.
Seems to being doing ok now. Sad bout Ozzy being diagnosed with Parkinson's.
