  • Single-handed application is a good way to practice. A few tips and tricks:
-Set yourself up for success by pulling the red tab across your body instead of away from it. You have a better chance of getting solid initial tightness
-practice with gloves on if you wear them often
-focus on windlass placement so it is accessible
-for practice just turn the windlass once or twice, saying to yourself that you would turn until bleeding is controlled
-you may have to visualize the wound by exposing it to ensure bleeding is controlled
-reassess tourniquet tightness after any patient movement, or at least every 5 minutes for the first part of your assessment
-when should you record the time of placement? When you have the time take the time, do not let it interfere with other life-saving interventions
-always finish your tourniquet application by securing the tail!
-try not to cheat by using the injured limb, you likely won’t have full function
Remember to use training tourniquets and not your operational tourniquets. Don’t worry I do not one a single absurdly large left shoulder, it is the trainer by @trueclot

What a great demonstration. The tip regarding the orientation of the red tongue of the Tourniquet is brilliant!

I've had to do this to stop myself from bleeding out after severe trauma to my lower arm and it's almost impossible to get a good application with a sleeve in place. Take the 2 seconds to remove any clothing and prevent having to remove the TQ and re-apply, which hurts even worse than the original application.. Even after clothing removal, I still had a bit of seepage. I was using a CAT II.
Did plenty of TQ apps on other people but it's much harder to do on yourself right after trauma.
I'm trained up on CAT and RAT style TQs but when my own life was on the line, I went straight for the CAT.
