  • This week I'm answering your questions in a Q&A - whether you have a sewing question or something a bit more general pop it in the comments below for a chance to be featured in the next video and thank you to everyone who took part previously and provided the questions for today. I think there are some really useful and interesting questions and resulting sewing tips and ideas that came out of this one, which will be useful for a lot of people. I chatted about overlocker needles, extra fabric for pattern matching requirements, lining skirts both with and without a waistband, finishing raw edges without an overlocker, dropping the waist of a sewing pattern, different types of sewing and overlocker thread and storage, coverstitch machines and linings for jersey fabrics. Phew there's a lot of sewing chat there! As always everything is linked below.

Great video!! I know I would absolutely love a tutorial for adding & installing a lining to a pattern that doesn’t already include one. I sewed a blazer to which I’ve wanted to add a lining for years 😅 I’m sure the method would be very similar to that of a skirt. Thank you Lucy!

@CurveAppeal I don’t know if Lucy is going to reply to this question, but adding a lining isn’t difficult once you’ve sewn your jacket. Basically, if you have a lapel on your jacket, you’ll only need to use the font, back and sleeve pieces for the lining. You won’t need the neck, facings, or pocket pieces. You’ll construct the front and back as usual and add the sleeves. Of course, the hems on the sleeves and body of the linings will be shorter than the jacket so that they don’t stick out from under your jacket when worn. Since you’ve already made a jacket, it means you’re an accomplished seamstress. Just look at your store bought lined jackets to see how they are sewn and do the same with your jacket. I have no doubt you’ll have success!

Thanks Lucy! Great info there especially with overlocker machine needles as that can be an area where sewers can get confused about what they should use. I have an Elna overlocker which is now 30 yrs old and have had good use out of it sewing kids clothes and still going strong. When I went to my Janome store they recommended to check my manual and did get the equivalent needles and they also advised that you could use the same needles for stretch and woven too.

Hi Lucy, another great video with so many helpful ideas! Can you tell us the pattern you used for your red animal print top and if you used the knit binder to attach your neckband? Looks like a 15mm single fold? I like the neckline and would like to buy this pattern. Thank you.

Stitching in the ditch on a waistband only to find I've missed the interior fabric may be my greatest sewing challenge. I even use wonder tape. Along the lines of what you were suggesting with overlocking the interior waistband edge and leaving it longer, I have an Armani suit that uses a similar technique. But instead of overlocking, the bottom of the interior waistband is extended by about 2cm and the edge is bias-bound with a narrow strip of bias tape. (I hope I've explained that clearly.) It's a very neat finish which is, for me, always the goal. I have a stack of shorts on the cutting table that I'll be applying this technique to.

Hi. Great video. I have a question about lining. You talked about lining a skirt. Generally, what type of fabric is used for this. I made dresses and skirts this summer and I hate it when you can see through it in the sun. Or if not lined, what sort of fabric is used to make a half slip. I like dresses because they are cooler but adding another layer- lining- defeats the purpose because I get too warm in our humid summers. . I made a sleeveless shift dress from linen and lined it with something but it made it hot and heavy ( cotton or cotton/ poly), I ended up cutting out the lining afterwards just above the waist. What’s a good fabric that is cool in summer, breathable and doesn’t stick to the garment?

Excellent question for when it's 95F and nearly equal humidity! Have tried lining with fine cotton, silk chemise, and "wicking" poly but still overheat. Maybe my outer fabric was more the problem? Those outdoor July weddings have always been hard to dress for!

Just catching up with the video. I line just about every skirt and dress, if making for really hot climate I have used muslin, really thin almost gauze cotton, and for my thin knits I use a white or light coloured cheap stretch mesh - NOT the kind you’d use in a bra, but rather drapey and really open structure (airy). I hate when clothes stick to my backside when I’m dripping with sweat (I’m Scottish and anything above 19C has me sweating), so I may only line the skirt portion of dresses, but it really helps how skirt moves and drapes. I line even if pattern does not call for it. You can some times treat mesh as underlining and sew jersey and mesh as one, no need to think too much if done this way.

Thanks for another great video. Is that a new Husqvarna sewing machine behind you? You also mentioned using woolly nylon when making active wear. Was that in the overlocker or sewing machine?

Hi to your correspondent who asked about using viscose jersey lining as well as outer: might I suggest a cotton jersey instead? It's more stable than the viscose jersey would be, and still avoids polyester! (I make a lot of jersey dresses, tend to use my cotton jersey offcuts as bodice linings for comfort). Sian on the Kittenish Behaviour channel has quite a lot of information on lining jersey dresses.

Hi Lucy I love all of your videos, I have a question for you. I am making an unlined Liesel + Co yanaka jacket sewing pattern in a heavier dark multicoloured velvet upholstery fabric, but realised to my horror that it is white on the inside! I am wondering how to go about lining the inside or (bagging it ?) so as not to sew hong kong seams, but ultimately to hide the white inside please? With many Thanks from Australia - Tracey xx

Is suiting used as a lining fabric? How many samples could we buy? would you line a crepe dress?

Hi Lucy, I have a pfaff passport 2 and my question is why does my bobbin case keep jumping out of place. It did it quite a lot when sewing my last garment and I think it is to do with the fabric. It was a quilted jersey which is quite thick. It doesn't seem to do it with cotton.
    Thanks

Thanks for the video. The extra material requirement is helpful for me. I try to get more material than I need but I've been caught out in the past by not checking the width!
One questions from me. What sewing tools would you say is worth investing in verses ones you can get away with buying cheaper? I'm thinking about things youre likely to buy once like rotary cutters, scissors, scissor sharpeners, quilting rulers, french curves, etc., as well as things that you'll buy repeatedly like needles, thread, bobbins, pins, etc.
The last thing I want to do is damage my machine or fabric, but things do add up quickly!
