I started out as a strummer, then started putting a lot of time into my fingerpicking two years ago, now I can do one or the other. The next challenge is to start mixing them together in a piece. Thanks for the video.

Best explanation I have seen yet for the logic behind finger picking. I can't tell you Hal how many people (when I have asked) have replied to my question about what strings are plucked when, attempt to answer by covering ALL bases for all patterns with rather than giving a starting point with an explanation. i.e. Answers of: "Well, it depends..." and "whatever sounds good" or "I just do it" without explaining what "it" is. Your explanation is the difference between a pure subject matter expert and a subject matter expert who can teach (you are the latter, of course!). So, thanks a) for giving me a starting point; b) explaining the logic; and c) showing the pattern close up and more than once. Yours is the first time I have seen someone demonstrate (i.e. on your 1st demoed pattern) the fact that one picks the bottom string at the end of the pattern and then again at the beginning when it repeats; the same for the top string. No one has ever been able to demo that as effectively, and frankly never knew what I meant/couldn't answer when I asked if I should (in fact most seemed outright baffled by the question or assumed it was obvious)...translation for all this: you're amazing, sir. Thank you!

Hi Hal. Part of me is gutted that you have given away my secret - I've got a couple of simple patterns going and my group thinks I'm a far better player than I am. But the other part of me is grateful for what you are doing. Looking forward to learning more from you.

Thanks Hal for the video. I always have trouble adding in chords while finger picking. I guess I just need to work on the finger pattern longer (muscle memory) before trying to add chords.

Hello can I use any fingers I wish .when finger picking any song 🤔 I’m a beginner.

Well you can, but I believe you'll benefit from training your hand to use your thumb on the 4th string (G), your index on the 3rd (C), your middle finger on the 2nd (E), and your ring on the 1st (A).

hi Hal I have a very jerky youtube so it a bit tricky seeing what you doing would you mind telling me .... I'm playing GCEA= G =4th String C =3rd E=2sec A = 1stString
    are you playing the second part of video 4/3 4/2 4/1 ----- 4/3 4/2 4/1------ 4/3 4/2 4/1 hope you understand me thanks

Hi Grant. It's actually 4/2 3/1 4/2 3/1 in the second half of the video. That is pluck the 4th string, then the 2nd string, then the 3rd string, and the 1st string and repeat until you can't stand it no more. lol.
