    There’s no shortage of truck drivers, there’s a shortage of professionals.

    I'm a retired trucker of 40 years on the road , watching your video's ALMOST makes me want to be back out there. Three things still anger me , poor pay , ELD's and the lac of professional drivers. After thinking about what I disliked in my life in trucking there is one thing I failed to mention "groceries warehouse employees" , 99% of them must be children of dispatchers who for some reason hate truckers.

    I tell companies I want $15 an hour for every single hour I’m away from the terminal. They never agree to that. Why shouldn’t I be paid at least that? $1800 a week for 5 days should be a minimum. It’s not too much for the responsibility.

    There's also a roofer's shortage. I have an open offer for anyone who wants to reroof my house for $50, but I never have any takers. People are so lazy.

      Who tf is going to roof an entire house for 50 dollars? That's at least two days of work. Offer at least 200 dollars and maybe someone will actually roof it.

    Someone should highlight in Big Media why those who draft anti truckers laws have never driven or even have a clue about truck driving? This is so stupid. Would anyone wana ride airplane with pilot who has never flown before?? There should be some stipulation over who can qualify in drafting, designing and implementing trucking laws..Period!
    (Love the idea of taking a week off for fishing all at same time..to make a good valid point)

    Dave the ATA has literally screwed the whole industry over from the ground up! They had laws made and passed that they thought would help the mega carriers that actually bit them in the a**! The ELD is a prime example, they fought for it and now they don't want it! They priced freight so low to get all of the loads and priced the smaller companies out of business, now even the larger carriers are going out of business! I as an owner of 3 trucks want to pay good drivers more money but can't because I'm not making enough to pay more. With 3 trucks and the time I'm putting in am not even making enough to pay myself a decent wage. Not to mention the majority of driver's that I interview for hiring don't have the qualifications and are not the quality of driver I am looking for to begin with. You're right there isn't a shortage of CDL drivers out there but there's a shortage of quality professional drivers! And that's why the insurance rates have increased so much. I went from paying $140 per month ten years ago for full coverage insurance to now paying over $1500 per month per truck! My registration also went from $100 per year to over $2,000 per year in the same time frame. And then you add in the extra costs of fuel and extra maintenance on these newer trucks and the cost of new trucks have more than double I'm making a lot less money now and paying 10 fold more than I was in expenses! We can all blame California and the ATA for 99% of all of it! Thanks for the video Dave!

      @@SmartTrucking oh I know, the trucking industry as a whole is in a very sad state! I pull belly dump trailers for several contractors here locally and get around $100 per hour gross per truck but their price board tells their customer if they want gravel hauled that they charge around $130-$135 per hour then they call me to haul it for $100 per hour. 20 years ago I was making a lot more money when I was making $55 per hour and paying $2.25 for fuel than I am now at $100 per hour and $2.75 fuel!

    Those of us out here actually doing it, know there's no driver shortage. Because the law of supply and demand says, if this were true, drivers could set their own wages.

  • @thetruckersmanifesto3873

    I've never thought striking would end in higher driver wages, as an owner op with the gears of what's really going on in my head all the time I've wondered if if we all, as a group were to just slow down to 55. Fuel prices would drop slightly and the stuff they would need shipped would slowly pile up. Over a period of time they would have to pay more.

    All the truckers do not have to go on strike to make a difference; Just the tanker drivers that haul diesel will do the trick, and shut America down. That would stop all truckers, farmers, construction, and ships. Shut down for two weeks, and it will take America three months to catch up, and then they will pay an honest wage....just one mans thoughts!

A thought about getting the ball rolling is that maybe you could reach out to some other trucking channels here on RUclips and see if you can get them on board with some sort of week off agreement and do a joint video where they can endorse the idea.

    I work for a company that’s pretty rough. You can make good money but you gotta really work for it. I don’t leave California and I’m home everyday, bring home a little more than 1k a week and I don’t work weekends unless I want too. My buddy that I convinced to get into trucking, went through it with swift. They had him working OTR on the east coast for weeks at a time and he’s barely making 800 a week! That’s some highway robbery right there, I would not like to be away from home and my family for bottom of the barrow scraps like that. Good thing he ended up quitting as soon as he was able to get home because it wasn’t worth it and he makes double the money for being a barber.

    this isn't just trucking. Cost of living has increased significantly and just about every blue collar racket doesn't want to pay what they should. I'm struggling with that very problem now. they don't want to pay the national average I&C (instrumentation and control tech) pay where I work and they're calling my bluff on quitting to find the wage I need to have a decent life for myself and family.
    Prolly gonna switch up, earn my stripes and get my cdl and drive local. Tired of living on 430 a week.

  • @rileymcfarland
    @rileymcfarland 4 года назад +2

    I think one of the biggest issues that truck drivers face is being in unsafe situations due to criminals and low lifes. All drivers without any felonies should be allowed to carry concealed weapons across state lines without the threat of loosing their job from their carrier's who violate the drivers God given and constitutionally protected rights. I just graduated CDL school to get my Class A as a backup plan and if I do end up driving I refuse to drive OTR for anyone who wont allow me to carry protection.

    • @rileymcfarland
      @rileymcfarland 4 года назад +1

      Also if the drivers stop delivering to areas where they cant legally carry, then that place simply doesnt get their goods. These places need their goods more than the drivers need to deliver there. Drivers have all the power in this nation, once they all come together.

Looks like they were driving too fast for the conditions and were completly out of control when they needed to make a sudden stop. Some of the drivers ran across the highway in case the whole scene started on fire. Scary indeed.

    Two weeks notice used to be noble and just. A place like CRST, Schneider, Swift,ect; They will have you drop the truck off opposite of where you live, and then make you find your way home. If you live in Pennsylvania, you will be sent to California. If you live in California, you will be sent to Pennsylvania.

Last week I was down to 800, never missed a day, doing the same runs and miles....I quit, after waiting 3 hours in a door with a run that was 6 miles....tomorrow I’m looking to get on with a friend, 2000 a week and my own truck... these companies will do you dirty, it’s on you to be smart about your money 💰

    Schneider has 19,300 employees. If you divid $9,000,000 by 19,300 you get $466.33 per year. So even if the CEO earned nothing, it would not have a significant impact on the wages of the other employees.

    Well if they weren't so picky. You turn over one semi loaded with TV's and suddenly they don't want anything to do with you.

    Why do truckers debate whether there is a driver shortage or not? If there really is a driver shortage then the drivers are worth more (a good thing) and you will see pay increases like we did in 2018 and higher load rates. As a driver you want a driver shortage!

    @ 18:35 - the government doesn't step in because they cause most of the problem, and hate to admit when they're at fault.
    I think the week off in the summer is a great idea, if only it would happen.

    Why is the logistics software so poor? The trip planning should be more of a science. The shippers should have a fine if the load isn't ready on time. The process needs to be more data driven. The drivers have to wait too much. Not that the drivers should become a cog in the gears, but the entire trip should be more predictable.

      Couldn't agree more. I sometimes wonder if the software is not the problem as much as the office guy running it.

    PRIME INC. is a perfect example. They convince the driver that they are making a killing. If you don't believe me, look on Utube. There are many channels of Utube truckers showing the world how much money they make. They don't even understand that those wages they are so proud of, are that of a well payed company driver.

    If 100 people, probably less would refuse to work for a week at all the megas then all drivers would be paid for all their time. If you work for free they'll happily accept the donation of your time.

    There's only one way to deal with the contempt, derision and low pay in this industry. And that is to abandon it altogether. No has to drive trucks for a living and if you do because you love it, then quit bitchin' about it. I drove OTR for a few years back when I could run and it was still fun. The moment it became lower paying with higher risk of regulatory fines I quit driving and worked in construction. A lot more money and a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. Demand the best of yourself and you'll prosper in any other industry and have a better quality of life.
