First time i saw this video was probably around 2009. One of the sickest thing i’d heard coming out of a drum. 0:40 still the sickest groove i’ve ever heard man.
Can't believe people are hating on this solo. I feel like there's a lot of people here who don't understand the technicality of this piece. But then again, I'm a damn 17 year old with only marching band/indoor percussion experience and even I can see the skill in this. Come on y'all.
I love this drummer!! He isn't just an amazing, talented drummer, but he's a great entertainer as well! So many unbelievable licks going on in this video. Jeez...
YES. It's that simple: drummers, when soloing, love it to just be a set of EXERCISES... without any groove or beat, which is a huge mistake. Do a great BEAT... and throw in sick chops around the beat!
It really makes me sad that he would just give us that stankface beat at 0:39 and then immediately take it away. You keep wanting it to come back but it doesn't
Classic video. I played the drums for 10 years before I stopped to focus on college in 2013. This makes me miss it so much. Future goal forsure to find a nice set and get back into it when life isn't so busy!
We hate, because he is soooo good. Playing drums for 30 years, practice, just simply can’t be there, ever. Love for Thomas, it just seems simple for him to do this!
Lang is one of my favourites.... Hes so much more than sloppy double bass, he has the feel and he plays everything he gets to so damn tight and with feel!
The reason why it is the best is the fact that he is doing completely different tempos with all four of his limbs, that is the hardest thing to do. You have to be a drummer to appreciate this
1,988 drummers were jealous and clicked unlike./.LOSERS.This guys is AWESOME ! Haters gonna hate.Go practice turds instead of spewing vitriolic nonsense ! GO PRACTICE TROLLS.I am not connected in any way to this drummer. But I know great when I see it.
Jamie Strachan I'm not jealous, I know that this guy is way better than me. I disliked because this is not even close to the greatest solo in the world - it's a drummers preference
This guy is just absolutely phenomenal. The only reason why Keith Moon and Neil Peart got top ratings is because they managed to put it into music that people absolutely loved. I'm not saying he can't do that, I'm sure he could do that... with one hand. But that is just how it is. Who knows, he might just love drumming and may not want all the major attention. Popular music needs some simplicity. He is just way too over peoples heads.
I agree with nikonian1116....There is no "best" when it comes to music or art. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" as once said. Just like there is no best looking woman/man. There is always someone better looking. LOL This gentleman is very, very talented and was in the right place to be noticed. Its amazing how talented we all are in our own ways, just never discovered. Just ramblin'. sorry.
Anybody that makes a list of the 5 best drummers in the world or makes a list of the 10 best drummers ever and doesn't have him in both is bogus and shouldn't even be judging. It started 100 years ago in New Orleans. That was the first drum kit. There have been great ones but like everything, as time goes on, the bar gets raised higher. We don't know how good Buddy Rich could've been today because in his day, he just did what he had to to be the best. Today, I think when you are talking about a complete drummer, it should be someone that isn't stuck in one genre of music. My opinion and all I am is someone who has played a long time on several instruments and wasn't special on any of them. I haven't ever heard anyone I think is better technically and he can do the show, too. JoJo Mayer and Vinnie and close, but they definitely aren't better. Just because a drummer plays fast doesn't make him great. not every song is a drum solo. I see this one woman posting videos of the best female drummer. Why does there need to be a special list for women. Some guys always pick the hottest chick. There are really good women drummers, Sheila E and Hannah Ford for instance. If you listen to them, their drumming stands on its own. They don't need their own list. Back to Thomas. Nobody better.
You just said the TRUTH man. Exactly what I think too. Sad to see that so few people recognize it and consider bad criteria to elect the best drummer. I think there are a lot of jealous guys too.. It's unfair but it's life .. But if we talk about drums and nothing else, I think Thomas Lang is the BEST (or at least one of the very very best). There are a lot of other impressive drummers, but for the moment I have not seen anyone surpassing his technique. For example, I have never seen anyone being capable of such independence by playing complex rythms with 4 (!) pedals, while playing crazy stuff with drumsticks. I have also never seen anyone else that can reverse tempo between hands and feet.. Until now, he is the BEST I've ever seen.
Absolutely despise stick flipping but his footwork and his ability to play with the entire kit throughout was mind blowing. This is not just a talented drummer, but somebody who has fun drumming. Nothing needed to be conventional for even a second. He looked like he had a ball and I'm sure everybody who watched this did too.
Super chops. But where is the musicality? With no space between 128th notes, it's mainly stringing together a bunch of licks. Very well done licks, but one bar from Dave Garibaldi, Vinnie, or Bill Stewart speaks more than this 'solo', great as it is technically.
Totally agree! I guess some drummers practice so much on speed and tricks that they forget they are musicians, and the totally absence of musicality and Groove... I don't believe at all this is the best drum solo...!
+newvultraz It's the recording. They are mixing in too much sound from the room (like 70/30). And who knows about those over-head mics? His home recordings are much better than this.
I remember when my drummer friend showed me this video when it came out. Now I realise that 2007 is nearly 10 years ago. Woah! This is still an awesome drum solo!
I'm not trying to start an argument, but Thomas Lang is up there with Buddy Rich, Neil Peart, ect. Not saying he is better because I love Buddy Rich too, but Thomas Lang is still an amazing drummer.
+Isaac Dunning I didn't say that this guy sucks or anything like that. I was just making a statement. Mostly to whoever said or named this video best drum solo in the world. But since you brought it up or posted a reply to my comment, Just look at all of the comments that say no soul, or where is the drumming, all I hear is can bashing. Buddy invented drum patterns, and putting them together to make solos. he also led a 20 to 35 piece band. He could play more with just his left hand than most drummers can with both hands. Lang is not up there with Buddy Rich. Neil Peart etc. yes. In other words, there is Buddy Rich, and then there is Neil Peart etc.And by the way Buddy Rich invented that stick trick and was doing it way before this Lang dude was born.
+Luke West Neil Peart is great but over rated. More people that don't play drums thinks he's the best, if you're an actual drummer that's been drumming you're whole life you've seen better. Buddy rich is a legend, but for his time he could only learn so much. Thomas Lang is in a different era where he knows so much more because of the time. His knowledge with rudiments and how he applies them with feet and hands, right to left, then left to right is just on a whole different level.
I've played drums since I was 4, but I still love Neil Peart. Then again, it is probably because he was my idol for a long time. How about we just put an end to it and say they all are great drummers.
Thomas is simply amazing. None of his limbs seem connected like mine. Such great independence. One encouraging point is that his snare sounds like mine when not processed through whatever they use. Brilliant.
This is not really an outstanding solo that I would watch again, pretty average, and not really surprising. He's played way better. Definitely not the "best drum solo in the world".
How anyone can criticise Thomas Lang is beyond me. He is the equal of the best drummers. IMO drumming affords the musician more freedom of expression than any other instrument - that is the beauty of drumming... and Thomas expresses himself more freely than most. And I haven't even touched on his mindblowing technical virtuosity - that is a given. If Thomas isn't phenomenal then I clearly have misunderstood the very meaning of the word all these years.
Alberto Villalobos haha, I like the way you edited that so it looked like I agreed with your horseshit answer. Clever. Although, asking 'why' is nothing like asking 'which of these two things is bigger?'
Hendrik 1. it's a bad recording quality 2. it's recorded damn long *15 years ago*! what the hell do you think how good he is today? 3. there is timing. a rhythm. it's clear. I'm a drummer too... dunno what's wrong with your ears. Thomas is one of the best drummers worldwide, and in 2002 he was very good too. I is so good, you can't be as good as him, so please stop talking something negative about a professional
yep i kind of agree partly. but as i have seen thomas lang many times, i can tell you, that he is a showman, a bit technique, but no feeling. watch for example other germans like: jost nickel, moritz mueller or as a drummer you should know benny greb.
and there isnt timing at all btw try to count on it. no chance. he has no feeling for that.crashes landing way too early. a good beat is at ca 40 sec. but he only holds that rythm for 3 bars ^^
Feels an awful lot like when I see people say Vai, Satriani etc can only play fast and with no feeling, because even though they MIGHT be SOMETIMES be right, it seems like they don't know much about said instrument.
yoursola Not all drums solos have to "take you through a story" you can have tons of flashy drum solos that the main purpose is to hype up the audience. Thomas lang plays alot of these types of flashy chops, fast double bass and stick tricks because thats what the audience wants to see. Their are alot of successful drummers that play crazy chops all over solos, guys like Thomas pridgen and Tony royster, Aric Improta and many other drummers. Or their are drummers that can play solos that are verry musical and stick to a nice groove like Gavin harrison. I see alot of guys that can really play alot of both in a solo guys like Matt Garstka and JP Bouvet. I dont think their is a right or a wrong way to play a drum solo. All just personal preference and context.
Dude it's a choice. That's like asking why do some drummers not wear shirts. Serious drummers do whatever they want because they deserve being called a drummer. Peace!
Amrit Mehta Dude, it's a choice... called HOT DOGGING IT in my book. The last I checked one's ability to twirl sticks added NOTHING to their sound. If someone can tell me a PHYSIOLOGICAL edge this practice gives "serious drummers" maybe I can buy it. Peace to you as well!
S.A. Hogan Yeah I know that. Who said it adds to the sound or proves their ability on the batter head? But it's one more thing they're doing while they're playing. And playing is friggin' hard man. So it's pretty impressive when people do that. Not that people who don't stick trick aren't equally good. It's just an added accessory.
Amrit Mehta So, it's got a name: "stick trick," eh? Interesting. NO ONE said it adds anything to the sound (I was trying to figure out if it actually did)---that was my point. I'll always be more impressed by good PLAYING---don't think I've ever seen Peart "stick trick," and don't feel like I've missed anything---than a drummer's ability to twirl his sticks (a distraction, really; I'm always afraid he'll drop one of them). Please, tell me YOU don't stick trick! "He was so young, so talented---and then he got into stick tricking! Before you knew it he was tricking > drumming; that was when we knew we'd lost him!" JUST SAY NO to stick tricking!
I learned the beat at 40,I recorded 40-50 slowed it right down & pitch shifted it so it ended up being about a minute long, let me just say, what he did in that 10sec period without a second thought was INSANELY difficult, the hardest part was not so much learning it but trying to get the speed back up,it was definitely in the too hard basket, but I was determined to nail it!I'd say it took a good 2weeks,felt like 2 yrs though!
All the libraries of techniques are condensed here. Everything is here. This is an official study video. A normal human would spend 30 years only focusing on the strategies that were pulled off on these almost three minutes. Buddy Rich lives.
I agree with Nicolas. I think what it is to appreciate, the evolution of the performer and the instrument through the years. I am drummer and I have admired for his technique is the great Simon Phillips. I like very much Terry Bozzio, Virgil Donati,Stewart Copeland but recognize that drummers as Thomas Lang, technical exceeded in Phillips, Bonham. Collins and most classic drummers
My friend who is a drummer showed me a dvd of this guy about 8 years ago. I'm an average at best guitar player if that. But when I watched this guy play I thought " he can play ANY style". Amazing drummer in my opinion.
He is not the "prettiest" sounding drummer, but that dude's skills are nothing short of stellar! SO clean and precise! Looks as if he is eating lunch! Flawless, effortless, abilities, if nothing else! Plain scary!
Thomas Lang has come a long way, even his 2017. & 2018 Drum Solo's with Tony Royster were Extreme Mode, I guess righting note's mean's nothing, Can't wait for some more from Both of them.
Its about tastes Personally, i think Thomas Langs polirythms are the craziest most difficult to learn stuff ive encountered But as a drummer i understand why most could dislike this, its too technical
I saw him last night at a Drum Scene event. Him and Dave Weckl and Dom Famularo all performed their seperate peices and then they all played together! Each and everyone of them are unique in their drumming aproach and are all unbelievably talented.
I went to one of Thomas Lang's workshops in my country, Romania, and I asked him what his favorite drummers were. He replied with Buddy Rich and John Bonham, and when I said that my favourite drummers are Neil Peart and Bonham he said that Neil's a very great drummer, and then he nodded. Peart has a different style, he's great in his own way, and so is Bonham or Buddy Rich or even Mike Portnoy and Thomas Lang. Music is not a competition, you can't COMPARE artists.
Watching Thomas play, motivated me to give up drumming...
lol
Same...
Yes, me too... and to concentrate on MUSIC again! Nobody needs Stick Twirling...
And me :(
John Agresti that's typical for many good drummers. Otherwise it would be impossible to go that fast.
The fluidity is unbelievable
First time i saw this video was probably around 2009. One of the sickest thing i’d heard coming out of a drum.
0:40 still the sickest groove i’ve ever heard man.

Can't believe people are hating on this solo. I feel like there's a lot of people here who don't understand the technicality of this piece. But then again, I'm a damn 17 year old with only marching band/indoor percussion experience and even I can see the skill in this. Come on y'all.
He's amazing... maybe the best ever. I'm 55 .... drumming is just fun for me. Great part time job too though.
Hey man, now you are a 28 yo grown man. How has it been for you? Haha
Most amazing drummer in existence, absolutely gifted!
yes
100%✌️🏴
Mike Thorne from Saga?
I love this drummer!! He isn't just an amazing, talented drummer, but he's a great entertainer as well! So many unbelievable licks going on in this video. Jeez...
0:40 is SO DAMN GROOVY!!!!!
best part 0:39 - 0:47 damn it would be awsome to hear that beat in a song :D
YES. It's that simple: drummers, when soloing, love it to just be a set of EXERCISES... without any groove or beat, which is a huge mistake. Do a great BEAT... and throw in sick chops around the beat!
wow...everything he plays is insanely smooth and clean.....love it
I wish he'd have based more of his solo around that sick beat a :40
Amen
word
Definitely... It almost seems like it's so second nature to him that he doesn't even realize how cool of a groove that was.
It really makes me sad that he would just give us that stankface beat at 0:39 and then immediately take it away. You keep wanting it to come back but it doesn't
^THIS
Exactly!
indeed
Boo fucking hoo

Bobcat Sykes but the title is so wrong. No solo is the best.
@Y O J I M B O 用心棒 SKINNY Lang looks like... Benny Greb (maybe the tastiest drummer out there)

It's void of much and with such a bold title it's quite simple. Flash and tempo changing noise as you can't get into it.

+Eric Lee My thought exactly first time I saw this video. I was like "he probably can play more complicated rhythms than this."
Just 2 minutes long and one of the best drum solos I've ever seen. That is how good Thomas is.
The reason why it is the best is the fact that he is doing completely different tempos with all four of his limbs, that is the hardest thing to do. You have to be a drummer to appreciate this

this is probably the best solo I have seen from him and I have been following him for years, I wish he kept up the groove!
The groove from 40 seconds in is savage

very fun solo with an awesome technique, i have watched this more than 20 times and still enjoy it. :-)
Amazing. Don't you agree?
Haha, a recommendation from this video: "Lars Ulrich drum solo - best drum solos ever!"
The internet... Lies.... Lies everywhere. XD
Thomas lang back then was so much more enjoyable than he is now....
yeah, gotta b young to maximize d drums
Absolutely despise stick flipping but his footwork and his ability to play with the entire kit throughout was mind blowing. This is not just a talented drummer, but somebody who has fun drumming. Nothing needed to be conventional for even a second. He looked like he had a ball and I'm sure everybody who watched this did too.
Fun Fact: he is the only member of ZZ Top WITHOUT a beard.
Trying to find out who this guy looks like more: Matt Damon, mark wahlberg or JOHN CENA
HAHAHAHA real shit
mark wahlberg
None! Thomas Lang was born in 1967 so whomever you compare can only look like him. Aaron Eckhart kind of looks like Thomas Lang to be more accurate.
Probably Marky Mark or even FRED DURST
What the fck does John Cena look like???
I wanted to play drums...i just got done burning my kit😂
このドラマーは大したことないね😭
やはりバディ・リッチが上手くて凄すぎる✨
No homo, but dude has gained some muscle over the years.
have you seem him now JAJA?
joey jordison > thomas lang
@@valliant811 Jordison is shite!
@@valliant811 Joey Jordison shouldn't be mentioned even in a decent drummer's conversation.
holy shit he is fast on the base
double kick
Probably uses a trigger
bass* and yes triggers

That doesn't make it easier.

Not quite my tempo

this is definitly the best drummer i've never seen! he deserves to be the KING of alldrummers of the WORLD

What’s dubstep got to do this? 🤔
Max 240 p for over 9000 p solo. How depressing..

There's absolutely nothing funky about this solo. Didn't like it at all.
Do serious drummers twirl their sticks so much? Don't think I've seen Peart or Bonzo or Palmer---or, for that matter, Rich---EVER twirl his sticks.
I have to agree with ya. Could have done WITHOUT the goddamn stick twirls. It aint drumline......
This solo is trash compared to the other stuff he does.
I just randomly remembered watching this video a lot as a kid, and I was able to find it. Isn't it great when that happens?
He was one of my drum tutor's at MI London Great man and amazing drummer
Yes that is True
I learned the beat at 40,I recorded 40-50 slowed it right down & pitch shifted it so it ended up being about a minute long, let me just say, what he did in that 10sec period without a second thought was INSANELY difficult, the hardest part was not so much learning it but trying to get the speed back up,it was definitely in the too hard basket, but I was determined to nail it!I'd say it took a good 2weeks,felt like 2 yrs though!
Best ive ever seen honestly that shouldnt be humanly possible to be that good.
Watched this for tenth time still blows me away, all you technique freaks should learn from this guy.
This is hypnotic both visually and sound-wise.
I hear you Toby, I have never heard of this guy and found him by accident. He is BAAAAADD !
This dude is out of this universe and I only had the vid playing for about a minute!!!
Mr. Lang is a true Monster... How ever there is only one true drumming God and Professor.... Mr. Buddy Rich.....
As Austrian I watched this with 37 years and as guitar player and thought of learning drums before. I was dumb 😂
Absolutely amazing. Noticed he wasn't wearing any ear protection though. That snare was so loud!
The greatest of all time period
All the libraries of techniques are condensed here. Everything is here. This is an official study video. A normal human would spend 30 years only focusing on the strategies that were pulled off on these almost three minutes.
Buddy Rich lives.
Thomas Lang is on a level of his own. killing it!
YEAH MAN! So quick and clean. He make it look easy. Dig his footwork... oh heck IT'S ALL GOOD
He is not the "prettiest" sounding drummer, but that dude's skills are nothing short of stellar! SO clean and precise! Looks as if he is eating lunch! Flawless, effortless, abilities, if nothing else! Plain scary!
Literally everything you want in a drum solo
That cymbal choke at 0:28 gets me every time.
I have yet to find a drummer who is better then Thomas (who is alive) I can't even describe him, his ability is out of this world
Probably just about every non-drummer gets tired of a drum solo after about a minute.
*Comes back from the restroom* "Did I miss anything?"
It’s 2023 and this song was made in 2009
One of the best solos I`ver ever heard and kinda funny!
Thomas Lang has come a long way, even his 2017. & 2018 Drum Solo's with Tony Royster were Extreme Mode, I guess righting note's mean's nothing, Can't wait for some more from Both of them.
Thomas Lang is a drummer that is always at the right gig.
Its about tastes
Personally, i think Thomas Langs polirythms are the craziest most difficult to learn stuff ive encountered
But as a drummer i understand why most could dislike this, its too technical
I saw him last night at a Drum Scene event. Him and Dave Weckl and Dom Famularo all performed their seperate peices and then they all played together! Each and everyone of them are unique in their drumming aproach and are all unbelievably talented.
this performance makes me wanna buy a sonor kitttt! that snare boom and those flat toms an kickkk, dayummmnn
Awesome so glad to have his drumsticks which are signed :)
u have to be a drummer to know that this is marvelous.>!!!! so screw the people who disliked it. !
Its just not long enough!!! Incredible!
Its really fun to watch. ONE of my favorite drummers.
Such a great Drummer.
I discovered Thomas Lang years ago with this video and now I noticed how skinny was him in those years,...He is a real Genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
