The Wii U’s biggest problem was first & foremost, people didn’t know it was a new console. They focused so much on the controller that even some hardcore gamers weren’t sure. Wii U was fun and had great games, just terrible marketing
It was not just terrible marketing. The very concept just fundamentally didn’t work. The gamepad drove the price WAY up, but it didn’t entice people to buy it, third parties didn’t want to work around it, and even Nintendo themselves rarely did anything worthwhile with it. The bad marketing was simply the final nail in the coffin.
Even if everybody knew the Wii U was a separate console and didn’t cringe at all the commercials, I doubt it would’ve sold very well. I’d estimate it would’ve sold about as much as the GameCube, and that’s being generous. They shot themselves in the foot centering their whole console’s identity around an idea that nobody liked.
EDIT: oh and the launch lineup was fucking abysmal
@@dannybright8708 the concepts not the issue they just did not set stuff up well enough to make everything workout better like how with the Joy-cons an other parts of Switch they just don't get shown off well enough to work an even that's not everything
Yeah. I think it's due to it's terrible name and the fact that it looks like a Wii already.

@@89v1s10n wrong consoles great Miiverse integration and sound design/music in menus all made the device feel alive while the Switch just feels like looking at a brick
I still remember being in the Times Square Toys "R" Us before it shut down, staring down at a rack of boxed Wii Us sitting in the middle of the Nintendo/Gaming section and thinking "What tf is this? Is it a console??"
I remember standing there trying to recall the ads I saw months before and still not being sure if it was an add on, a controller or something else. It's a weirdly vivid memory for me, the florescent blue-purple lights, the twist to my face and the heavy helping of confusion.
Then a few years I later learned that the release didn't go over so well and it all made sense. The reason I was so confused was because Nintendo was too. Crazy how hard they missed with the marketing on this one.
If they had removed the “Wii” part of the name and done something different, I think it would’ve gone over better in terms of marketing

In a way I felt the Wii U's lifespan followed a very similar path like Windows 8. Even though they both didn't perform well compared to their predecessors, without their existence (the ideas, framework, etc.) we wouldn't have a strong successor down the line.
Wii U deserved better, is a special console that has sadly been underrated and has a sad death

You bought your wii u with the sole intention of modding it. I can bet money on that lol. No one, literally no one from when the switch released until the end of time, will purchase a wii u without the intention of modding it. This comment is so damn pointless
I recently just bought my first Wii U and it was one of the best gaming purchases I've ever made. I've been having so much fun experiencing the titles I missed out on, and even revisiting ones that'd been ported to Switch! It also immediately became my go-to retro console due to it running games from pretty much every Nintendo system before it. I'm happy seeing all the love it's been getting now since the servers died. Long live the Wii U!
I also really enjoyed the wii u. I got it soon after it launched and enjoyed it all the way through it's life. I think it could go down like the game cube. Bad launch and bad lifetime being completely outdone by it's successor. But a great library of games and a really interesting study topic.
I think maybe a few years from now people will really start to appreciate the Wii U
Hey, at least we got Xenoblade X and Tropical Freeze. Not to mention Mario Kart 8 is the best selling Switch game.
The Wii U was an overall necessary step to get to where we are today. Nintendo knew that the concept of playing console games on a tablet was a good idea.

The Wii U was the first console I bought myself in 2016, and I loved every moment of it. The GamePad was the main attraction, but just a few games made full use of it. WaraWara and Inkopolis Plaza made you feel part of a community, and the eShop always had nice music while browsing games.
What if every console had a 5-year lifespan? While always on years ending with 0's and 5's. Like Gamecube in 2000, Wii in 2005, and Wii U in 2010. How'd that have been like?
The Wii U has been one of the core memory I still have with my family. As of last year I had been without family since University Grad. I really saw Wii U as an escape and now playing game with my family brings back so many core memories. Your videos are amazing! Will use on my research project on Consoles!
It's weird how the Wii U is so foundly remembered, I remember owning one and I mainly used it for Wii backwards compatiblity and there weren't even a whole lot of Wii games I was even interested in. I only ever bought a Wii U at all because I didn't know how Dolphin emulator worked for Wii games or the options were limited for it.
I remember getting a Wii U back in 2013, when I turned 7. This console introduced me to E3, online communities for games, and the idea of learning about upcoming releases and getting excited.
Mario 3D World, Mario Maker, and Mario Kart 8 are probably the first games I ever first learned of from Nintendo's showcases and got excited about, even when their release was nearly or over a year away.
nahhh the console was bad, pricing and memory was terrible for a console compared to xbox and ps4. switch indeed took those games and made it better on a much better design console.

The Wii U was definitely a flawed console and looking back at it it's not a surprise that it failed, but there were a lot of great games for it for sure. As fun as the gamepad can be I think it might have been one of the worst gimmicks for Nintendo possibly the worst one because a lot of games just never really took advantage of the exclusive features of the gamepad and the gamepad really just was a controller in most cases.
I remember when I first owned a Wii U back in 2012 and by the way I was the first person in my hometown of Santa Rosa to get a Wii U at Target which actually looking back at it goes to show how unpopular the console was considering how hard it was to get the original Wii at launch, but anyways the Wii U did have some pretty solid games on it. But even back in 2012 I was under the expectation that if I switched the game to play on just the gamepad and not the TV that I could actually take it with me portably. That was something I expected which is not far off from what the switch actually turned out to be. It's too bad that wasn't the case but at least we got the switch now
Oh yeah the really small distance that you could move the tablet away from the console before it stopped working did suck
Despite its faults, I loved the Wii U, and still do. Nintendo's aesthetic from the launch of the DS to the Wii U was perfect, in my opinion. Playing these consoles is almost blissful in a way. Even though the Switch is a better piece of tech, I get more joy out of my Wii U.
Many people will cite one issue as the killing blow, but it wasn't one fatal mistake. The Wii U died to a thousand cuts.
With that said, I loved my Wii U, and don't regret buying it. Sadly, my gamepad died, so my Wii U has been shelved for years.
Im using it as of this moment and it feels more alive than ever (thanks pretendo for reviving the wii u)
I decided to get a Wii U for my birthday last year and im happy with it, its the only Nintendo device I own besides a Gameboy Color. While some of the kids at school play on their Switch, I plug in my Wii U and play on it using the Gamepad
Wii U is essentially the Home Console version of the DS but if they called it "Nintendo U", it could've been sell at least 3 times more than supposed 13 mil.

My introduction to the Wii U is the very thing that got me to love it from the start. My friend from around 2015-2016 and I always played Mario Kart 8 over at their house, and I pushed us to try out the online together, and whenever we'd spectate we would find the person running in 1st and cheer them on. Those experiences literally drove me to love mario kart as much as I do today. Hell when I got into Splatoon i said fuck it and got a wii u to play the original game and the wii u mario kart 8.
I bought a Wii U back in 2013 and i regret the purchase. Did i have fun with it and had a lot of great memories.
But since i couod only afford one console. I wish i bought an XOne or PS4 instead.
Thinking about the Wii U's launch lineup. New Super Mario Bros U was a pretty terrible idea as a launch title as nothing within NSMBU couldn’t have been done on the Wii.

I come here only to scream that Xenoblade X did amazing use of the gamepad, to such point that all the other Xenoblade games are playable on switch except X. And it's a pity because for me it's one of the best optimized (with the free dlc for optimizing loads) and one of the best games in the series and Wii U catalogue
There’s no doubt I love the Wii U it’s sad to see it go but it will always have at least 5 of my top 25 games

The reason the Wii U was a dead console during its run was because Nintendo didn't market the Wii U enough and people thought the Gamepad was an expensive add on to the Wii. I remember when I worked at EBGames (Australian Gamestop) at the time and a woman came in and said that Rayman Legends game didn't work on her son's Wii and I told her that the game was for Wii U Nintendo new console and she was so confused and end up returning the game.

I don't get it. Why do gamerz care what people say. If you love the wii u that's a win for the gamer. Who cares about the console sales. I don't like it when people say that if a console flop, so it's trash. The game boy to me was complete garbage, but it outsold every gaming device on the planet. Same with the ps2, complete garbage, but it outsold everything! Just because a console doesn't become a commercial success doesn't mean it's trash, and just because a console is a commercial success doesn't mean it's great. If you love the games you play you win, so what I'm trying to say is if you love video games why should it matter if others don't like it!? That's why gaming is great there is something for everyone!!!
