- After a long period of development, the final 1.0 version of Black Mesa has been released today, a full-fledged fan remake of Half-Life 1. Half-Life was released in 1998 and is considered a milestone in shooter history due to its scripted storytelling. It's impressive what hobby developers have done with the remake: all assets and environments have been rebuilt and some new features like a new physics engine have been added; and at the same time they stayed very close to the events and sequences of the original story. Too many uninspired remakes and remasters are released these days, but Black Mesa is a great example of how you can re-release an old game with great attention to detail and thus satisfy old fans as well as gain new ones.

Black Mesa, a wonderfully done remake of an old classic, and you can see the developers put their passion into remaking half-life 1. But if you guys can, play the original first, that way you can really appreciate just how much progress video-games have made today.

With this remake I see no reason to back to the original tbh
I really want to do so, to experience the game as it intended to be, but its outdated and causing me headaches only by looking at! The same thing happened to me when I played Halo MCC the first two games were disastrous and I couldn't stand them even though I've been a gamer since the N64 days but things are different now and we got used to modern technical level

BM looks for me now like like HL looked for me back then, extraordinary and exciting. Expectations according to their times.

Black Mesa is incredible. The first time I played it I had a huge grin on my face the whole time. It's quite a privilege to have your favorite game of all time remade to near perfection 20 years later. Big props to CC.

Easily one of the biggest trips must be playing a video game and then playing a significantly updated version 20 years later.

Black Mesa is one of the best remakes/remasters ever made. It's very faithful to the 1999 version.

Original Half Life sound effects give me such a nostalgia trip. Black Mesa is a masterful remake with a wonderful soundtrack. Xen levels are amazing.
I love the bsod in screens :D
The lighting update in 1.5 gives the game a lot more atmosphere. I love this remake.
Now we just need blue shift and opposing force dlc

I never played the first Half Life, and decided to try out Black Mesa last week, and finished the campaign yesterday. From a total newb's perspective who doesn't have nostalgia for the OG, I gotta say I really enjoyed it, but man, it felt like it just dragged a bit too much near the end especially after entering Xen. And I understand that the BM team actually put a lot of effort to make it even less tedious than the original, so I think I did the right choice by just playing Black Mesa straight away instead of playing the OG.

Black mesa definitely has some map differences and layouts.
Now crowbar collective should remake HL2 and call it "City 17." But regardless of that, HL2 graphics still holds up great like a fine wine to this day.
Hl2 doesnt need it. And I wish that black mesa kept some things like same music

Capcom made 2 of the best remakes in videogame history: Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, the first considered by many as the best remake ever done, so don't come to tell him how he has to do them just because the RE3 remake was lazy.

@VillRezint in fairness RE1make is the best remake ever made, re2make pales in comparison to the faithfulness, as good and fun as it is when compared to the original A and b scenario there should have been more added in the same vain as Lisa Trevor and her back story instead of being shorter and incoherent. let's not talk about re3make

In Half Life / HL2 I could bind the num pad and right ctrl and right shift, and could actually play the game.
You have bad pc i guess but i would recommend you to play Black Mesa on Lowest Settings

While the audio quality of Black Mesa is better than that of the original, I much prefer the voice acting of half life.

its a remake but its not a 1:1 remake they improved it just like resident evil remake 2/3/4 improved the game, this remake basically add the physics feature form half life 2 and make the graphics similar so it feels tehy are all the same universe.

you know what the biggest difference is Black-Mesa has a huge difficulty spike, its way harder than the original, there were times i swore i was playing dark souls with guns. clipping is still an issue they never fixed and the original never had, so thats disappointing a platformer with bad hit detection, prepare to fall alot thanks to invisible walls on... walls. besides those two things its good, but ill stick to the original, ive beaten both and i still feel the original is the superior product.
Black Mesa by all counts should have been as good gunplay as HL1 (or even HL2) But they spent all the focus on level design and less on making the enemies satisfying to fight. The only part I'd say the reverse comparison happens is the xen levels
@@naturesquad9174 Frankly, I found Black Mesa much more enjoyable than Half Life when it came to gunfights.The enemies had a huge difficulty increase without as much bullshit as the OG:
-HECU Troopers can actually shoot while moving this time, making them more of a threat than a simple annoyance.
-Vorts can dodge really well and can ACTUALLY MISS (My biggest complaint in HL1 was how the Vorts would take 60% of your HP because of their aimbot energy blasts).
-Assassins aren't as bad as in the OG, bit still present a lot of challenge.
-The level design WORKS FOR ONCE, making all conflict better.
Tbh I only disliked Black Mesa in Interloper, otherwise to me it's a much better Half Life.

Don’t know what that means but black mesa is the whole game. Half-life 2 is the one with the episodes and that game isn’t dated enough to need a remake

If you're talking about the Barneys, that was from the Blue Shift expansion. It updated the Barneys across the game. Considering Valve and Gearbox made Blue Shift in 2001, it is still technically original. It's not from a fanpack or anything.
