Only the Pontiac performance engine option W72 with 220 horsepower came with the T/A 6.6 call-outs on the shaker. The 180 horsepower L78 Pontiac 400 and the Olds 403 came with 6.6 liter callouts. An easy way to tell looking at the engine is the factory crome valve covers on the W72 Pontiac 400.

1977 Trans Am was a PIG couldn't even get out of it's own way in a race. This car was fast, in the 60's. It was a pig in the seventies all you got was a fire chicken and a paint job. The car produced an anemic 195 HP or 205 HP depending on the engine selection. All the Trans Am really ever had was Smokie and the Bandit fame!
Scoff all you want about these anemic cars but you wouldn’t have the Camaro, Mustang or Challenger of today without these cars being produced. Pontiac was the ONLY one at the time trying to make performance cars. The W72 400 offered in these cars was created because GM cancelled the 455 after 1976. It matched the HP of the last 455 (but obviously fell short in the torque department). You have to remember what they were up against during this era. A properly equipped 79 T/A with the W72 400 with a 4 speed could run a mid 14 second 1/4 mile off the showroom floor. This was garden variety muscle car era performance with an 8.2:1 compression 400 with the hideous pellet type catalytic converter plugging up the single exhaust. There was really nothing from 1980 to about 1985 until Buick got the GN right, GM started putting TPI engines in F bodies and Ford got the 5.0 Mustangs rolling. The Detroit horsepower wars got reignited when GM put the 350 TPI in the F bodies in the late 80s to one up the 5.0 Ford. So keeping the performance flame alive during the darkest days for American performance cars makes it legit.
Really?, 400K for something you're NEVER going to drive?, but, if you have that kind of coin, you could definitely afford another one of these to beat the snot out of!🤣🤣🤣
This is ridiculous! I love T/A's but that kind of money is stupid. I had one just like it my senior year of high school("83) It would be so easy to fake the 14 miles. You could disconnect the speedo cable easily and drive it. It could have 1400 miles and you most likely wouldn't know the difference.
I agree. There is no way that this car is worth $400,000. You could buy a Bloomington Gold certified, numbers matching, 1967 big block Corvette for less money than this.
@@Corvetteman True. But if the 14 original is legitimate there are only a handful. If it was a 67 big block Vette with 14 original miles the price would probably be in the $4,000,000 range.
@@NuclearBalls1 It seems like pretty much everyone who bought the Ford GT40 had the same idea. They put ‘em away to resell. They come along all the time in auctions but if the 14 miles on this T/A are legitimate, this is about the only chance you’d get to buy one. I remember reading a few years back about a 72 Pinto with like 1400 original miles selling for something ridiculous like $32,000 at one of these auctions.
I don't know how anyone could buy a car and put it away for the next guy. That's like not consummating your marriage and waiting 45 years for the divorce so the next guy can consummate the marriage.
I've owned a 79 tata- 4-speed since 84. Ironic seeing these cars again with crazy low mileage #s bet it's extremely hard to roll it back😉 like the 8-track players that were installed LMAO🤣
because no one produce these beautiful cars anymore and they become a sort of museum piece thus keeping a high value but with a low mileage at the same time.
Holy grail of Trans Ams? Not the 1969 Trans Am convertible? Not the SD-455s? For one of the slowest T/As ever made. I still like them, but they are what they are. The complete collection you could have for this. Who cares if it has 14 miles? You can't drive it, so it just atrophies.
I agree. The 77-78 T/A is my least favorite years of the 2nd gens but you still wouldn’t be able to touch a 69 T/A convertible for $400,000 even if it was a basket case in pieces.
I saw a 69 Trans Am convertible at a show around 1992-93ish. I knew it was valuable then but didn't even consider it would be a million dollar car some day.
In all likelihood, they already got a collection, perhaps this is the cheapest car in it.... Also, the car also in all likelihood havent been driven a single feet since it left the dealership so far, 14 miles is delivery mile numbers, and it will keep being locked up in a climate controlled room, just as it has been for 45 years. A private museum, if you will.
Yes, I hear your response. You're correct. I love firebirds, but 400k. But you gotta understand some people have so much money, they don't even know what to do with it.That's how crazy this world is sometimes

Some sucker paid $100,00 for a '77 Trans Am? Must have been a car owned by Burt Reynolds. I could see paying that price for a mint 73-74 Trans Am 455-SD.
Hey you folks that grew up with the Trans Ams. Let me know what you think...Did you notice a couple of things about this 1977 that just sold? This one is missing the grab strap that was located above the handle on the door, AND the vinyl seats do not look like the better grade vinyl used on the special editions. To me, these are not the vinyl seats that came with 1977's. Strange how this sold for so much if what I said is true.
I agree. The SD T/A is by far my favorite. If you were fortunate enough to find one with 14 original miles, you’d pay much more than $400,000 for it without doubt. But I like the looks of the 73 over the 74 but would certainly take either.
The proves P.T. Barnum was right! The 1977 Trans Am was junk when it came out and it is STILL junk. The REALLY king of the Pontiac Trans Am's is the 1973 -74 455 Super Duty, one of the best engines Pontiac had ever built at the time. Greed and stupidity go hand in hand.

I can't imagine why fewer and fewer people can't afford Pony/Muscle/High performance cars anymore...
When people can't afford them, the price comes down.
Eastbound and DOWN
Haha!
cant wait to bring my 1978 Y88 4spd Ttop car im 2 owner 48k ticker all original full number matching car on to mecum in june .. restore will be done in april
Lovely
Anybody that would pay $400,000 for a Pontic Trans Am, needs their Head examined. Some People have more Money then Brains.
WOW
Wow .14teen miles.
Laundering cash in plain sight
Works for
Nanshee…
1977 Trans Am was a PIG couldn't even get out of it's own way in a race. This car was fast, in the 60's. It was a pig in the seventies all you got was a fire chicken and a paint job. The car produced an anemic 195 HP or 205 HP depending on the engine selection. All the Trans Am really ever had was Smokie and the Bandit fame!
Yes but what did Ford and Mopar Have in the mid to late 70,s Absolutely Nothing! Gorgeous car!
@@Teabag697 Yes I would take a 427 Camaro or Big Block Corvette
I totally agree here. Some Ford GTs have sold for less, and who would trade that, for this. These people need to do a reality check, before bidding.
easy to reset the odometer
This is the kind of car that needs to be driven. Not to sit in a damn garage. 14 miles is such cheek. 400k for a glorified garage queen oy.
I've owned a 79 tata- 4-speed since 84. Ironic seeing these cars again with crazy low mileage #s bet it's extremely hard to roll it back😉 like the 8-track players that were installed LMAO🤣
Who the crap buys a car like that and doesn't drive the snot out of it???
someone now rich
id rather own one to drive, driving it will depreciate it.
Beautiful car but anything over 80k to 100k maximum is insane.
It’s only FRNs…
And it’s Adamatic wow
I bought my 78 t/a for 4000 Grand back in 1995 it only had 240000miles sold it for 4500 3 yrs later boy did i under price my t/a
More money then common sense ! 😳 Jus don’t see it ! 🤷🏻♀️
Wow, I will never understand why anyone would sit on a car like this and not drive it...
Sit on this one and drive another similar.
because no one produce these beautiful cars anymore and they become a sort of museum piece thus keeping a high value but with a low mileage at the same time.
@@VortexDnB Not when it was made... when it was made it was as common as ground beef.
@@michaelthebarbarian3380 i was talking about nowadays ofc.
@@VortexDnB And I was clearly talking about the dude who sat on this care since new ofc.
Welp now its not gonna go fore cheap in the market anymore.
If it was a manual add another $ 300k :)
Too bad it wasn't. Would be so much more fun. (At least for people who still know how to use a clutch.)
I bought a 1976 TA brand new while serving in the U.S. Army.
Paid under 5 gs. That car was a dog POS! My 1957 Chevy
Nomad was 10x the car!!
1:47 "SOLD!"
SHEEESH🔥😍
even though I love trans ams, I would never ever pay 400k for any car that has rolled up windows. Ridiculous
It's worth whatever someone willing to pay, as my Dad told me years ago.
Pure insanity
If you have the money ... why not? Can't take it with you. Drive it home & take the loss off your taxes! LOL
Love these cars but they ain’t worth a penny over 40K. They can’t hold a candle to the 60’s Firebirds and GTO’s.
Yes, I hear your response. You're correct. I love firebirds, but 400k. But you gotta understand some people have so much money, they don't even know what to do with it.That's how crazy this world is sometimes
Maybe it has to do with scarcity, from the fact that its an all original with 14 miles. But we all know its not 400 grand
Car has things that are not right. Like standard interior with the passenger dash grab bar . It didn't leave the factory like that. Just saying .
I have a 77 Formula and a 78 Trans Am and they left the factory that way for sure.
Fully restored car they picked up for a couple of thousand bucks somewhere gave it a new paint job and went through the interior and drive train and rolled back the odometer bought some pamphlets for it it's called eBay got some dumbass to give them $400,000 for it I had one gave them $1500 big whopping bucks for it what a joke
Crazy you could have a 30k dollar car sitting side by side with this one and couldn't even tell the difference
He baught two of them to maintain his will power.
Nope! Would rather have a 74' Trans Am Super Duty 455 at a much cheaper price.
I agree. The SD T/A is by far my favorite. If you were fortunate enough to find one with 14 original miles, you’d pay much more than $400,000 for it without doubt. But I like the looks of the 73 over the 74 but would certainly take either.
id drive the weelz off it...n hav to 4 ofm 👍🤣🔥🔥🍻😝
Beautiful car but who is the brain dead person who paid 400; 000 ???????
1:50 You'll see the brain dead person. He's the one in the dark shirt wearing a $150,000 Rolex Daytona watch.
He's the brain dead guy who is smart enough to be able to afford 400k for a Trans Am. Must have been doing something right.
I'd rather have one with the sprint 6
Belleza negra
$400K for an automatic, good grief
Honey hush....Trans Am, whats your pleasure
Hope you get your money worth cars like that yeah with a diaper money needs go somewhere else to munch man never be drove for that munch money don’t see it
Not a mask in site!
Chinese people been wearing the mask for 100 years tho😂 we saw them doing that forever in america too since 1998... What's the difference
