  • Quail populations, particularly Northern bobwhite, have been declining for years, and the major factor is habitat loss. In Texas, 90% of the state is privately owned, so landowners are the key to restoring quail populations through habitat restoration and management. The Wildlife Habitat Federation serves as a model that can be replicated around the state to get landowners to work together to restore quail. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension joins other groups, such as Texas Parks and Wildlife, in educating landowners on the best habitat management techniques. Visit wildlife.tamu.edu

We have the same issue in Delaware. I don't believe it was just hunting that caused the decline. We had areas in which we were the only ones hunting and they went from 3 or 4 covey's of 20 - 30 birds each on a farm to nothing in about a year or two and we certainly were not taking more than about 10 birds in a year. I haven't seen a wild quail in this area in last 15 years. Not even sure it is habitat loss. The farms we hunt on have the same amount of habitat as they have had for the last 50 years. Is it the herbicide that is being sprayed on the fields?
