IN JAMAICA...THE ORIGINS THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS PEPPERPOT SOUP

  • This is a story we had to tell, hearing that George Washington's favorite Pepper Pot Soup was made from Jamaican products!
    We took the World famous Walter Staib back to Portland, and re-united him with Miss. Betty, who cooks for visitors who raft down the Rio Grande River in Jamaica, using an open flame, and rocks to maintain a cooking temperature...rain or shine.
    Her recipe is the one Walter uses at his restaurant The City Tavern in Philadelphia, and has been the favorite soup served there for years.

    Being in the hospitality business on our lovely island has really exposed me to a lot. I remember rafting down the Rio Grande and hearing about this lady. She had recently passed and her daughter is carrying on the business. The food was really good. Our creativity and drive will always make us succeed.

    This is indigenous from the Tainos, also eaten in the Guyana's in South America. Jamaican food is a mix of Indigenous, African, Indian, Chinese European and Middle Eastern. Many cultures that live close to the land share similar things not just African. If you notice I use an African name, and I'm quite Afrocentric, but I'm also believer in truth not myths.

      It is not a myth. Jamaica's motto is: Out of many, one people. It therefore stands to reason that the Jamaican cuisine is a combination of ALL the cultures you mentioned in your post. Jamaica is unique because we embrace ALL of the cultures that make us who we are. One ❤️ 🇯🇲🇨🇦🙏🏿

    Man, bringing back memories of my great grandma cooking outside in the country side of Manchester Jamaica. Man she knows her ground seasoning and pepper. Her jerk chicken was superb jerking with some type of wood that she rest on tap that Allows the flavour to soak even to the bone.😜

      Honest question. Are there certain groups of Jamaicans who have a pepper pot recipe? My father's side of the family is Jamaican and I've never heard anyone mention the dish. But my Guyanese side of the family eats it every year for Christmas. I did a bit of digging and it seems like the Caribs and the African slaves across the islands had their own variations on the recipe but I'm wondering if there are certain groups within those cultures who don't know that those recipes are a part of their heritage?

    MARCUS GARVEY IS WHO TAUGHT BLACK AMAERICAN PEOPLE DIGNITY!

    • @cjackman74
      @cjackman74 4 месяца назад

      Teach Black Americans dignity? Dude, if Marcus Garvey was so great, why couldn't he end British colonialism in Jamaica? I guess he was ineffective at teaching colonial Jamaicans to have some dignity for themselves instead of embracing their status as colonial British subjects and mimicking their British colonial masters. Check your dirty laundry before you start examining somebody else's. And what does Marcus Garvey and Black Americans have to do with some damn soup, which is the subject of this video? Some of you island people are too full of yourselves, ignorant, backward and intellectually incoherent. Smdh!

    No where in this video do I make the claim that George Washington created Pepperpot soup...only that it is said that he enjoyed a version of it. This story was told to us by the curator of the restaurant, Walter Staib.
    Your claim that this is rubbish is offensive, as is your tone.

    @miggy221 Not just Africa, also India, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Americas. In fact both pepperpot and jerk are indigenous to Jamaica and the cooking methods and spices (pimento(allspice) and scotch bonnet peppers which are indigenous to the Caribbean and Latin America were used by the Tainos (Arawaks) who passed on their traditions to the Maroons who kept the traditions alive. Also our famous, at least to Jamaicans,bammy made from cassava/yucca.

      Leah makes more money than he does, selling to the tourists on the river bank, pays no rent or taxes, no gas or light bill, other than the cost of ingredients it's all profit. Don't feel sorry for her she knows what she is doing.

    You have very clearly missed the entire story man...take off your dark glasses next time, you may see things a bit clearer.
