I think Bill's goofy and improbable answers are having an unconscious psychological affect on Patti who is tending to give a standard answer more often.
They always match Charles when he writes numerous things, why not with someone else?! That was wrong! Plus the moving and walking should definitely have matched! I think Ira was on the rag this day!
@@randydellinger2996 It was still weird, a little rude even. It was common to share with family and friends after asking, but not everybody did. There were polite ways out of it, such as saying you thought you were coming down with something, or finding a container to pour a bit of your drink in and giving it to them. Unless Gene has actual friendships with these people off-screen, he's stepping over the lines of good manners by even asking them. He likes to push the boundaries of his authority in uncomfortable ways. He could easily ask a stage hand or whatever they're called to bring up a glass kept off stage during commercials, or keep a cup tucked somewhere around the panelists. Instead, he puts people on the spot. I like him as a host, but in this matter, he's gauche.
H/H match update for episode 1437: ... ~~~Today's action: We start with a head-to-head question (our champion's third; he hasn't yet scored a match). The wheel kicks off its week by picking the new kid on the block. Don Galloway. Double. Stats: This is Don's first go at a H/H question. *Today's H/H question: "_______Candle"* (Birthday candle? Wax candle? Roman candle? After a minute, that's all I've come up with. None of them sounds particularly great. I'll go with Roman candle.) Don raises up out of his chair as if to get a better look at the lower tier. Brett watches him write. She approves his answer. He files the card. Ding. For his third H/H attempt, our champ says "Christmas candle." I've got the video on pause, so I haven't heard the audience reaction yet, but I don't think this is a terribly likely answer. Rolling the tape, I hear what Gene describes as "a smattering of applause." I'd rate the audience reaction about a 4 or 5 on the positivity scale. Maybe it's not as bad an answer as I'd initially thought... Oh, I guess that explains the $10,000 check I got from CBS back in 1979 (just kidding): Don's card says "Roman." No H/H match this time. Despite some (unusually) strict judging in the first round, our champ defeats his latest challenger (Don provided the first and winning match), earning his fourth attempt at the big money. *Today's audience match question: "_______Mud"* My thoughts: (Harvey, Roger, Stick in the) - Yes, I'm living by the rule that spelling doesn't count with these answers! (And no, I don't expect the "Star Trek" character to actually be on the board.) The celebs: Bill (Mississippi), Brett (Stick in the), Charles (Clear as) The choice: Mississippi The answers: Mississippi, Clear as, Stick in the Our champ is really taking the slow route to winning money. Another $100 from the audience and the head-to-head will be tomorrow... ~~~Here's our standing leader board (no changes since 1435) showing the 14 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she or he has "retired" from the show and their H/H stats are now complete.) WOW! this is, by far, the WORST episode with Ira! It didn't match because he had 3 answers on the card, even though one of the words was the right word IT NEVER STOPPED HIM BEFORE!
The gorgeous Lee Meriwether on this fun Match Game! Thank you !
Gene's MORE than just a game show host! 🤩👍
I declare this a gold star episode
I try to put my mind in the era for my response to "blank". Howard Cosell instantly came to my mind, and she said the same thing!
My first thought was Ray Charles.
Wow was anything a match to ira? Walking and moving not a match? Don said knife as his first answer and that wasnt a match. Crazy!
I think Patti looks so beautiful with that hairstyle! Lee Meriwether is as lovely as always! Lol Bill's such a hoot.
Yes, Patti is 🔥 and I think Lee looks better now than when she was Miss America, and yes, Bill is a certifiable loon
CNR calling Gene a little Nancy about the tea cozy. Hilarity!
Wow, Bill Daily gives some really bad answers. But I love seeing him on Match Game anyway!

Bill looks good with a beard
1:23 so I guess in 79 people just drank out of the same cup like that even if they didn’t know each other
No. This was weird.
Gene has done the same thing at least 10 times in the past 2 years of the show.
