Cutting up broken cymbals - make a smaler cymbal! NO LATHE!

- I had some broken Zildjians lying around, so i tried to cut them into smaler cymbals without using fancy tools.
Don't try any of this at home. This is not a how-to-video, it's just entertainment, like the A-Team.
Very cool, good work!!
Back in the 70’s, I got a 24” Zildjian from a pawn shop, it had a big bell and sounded great untill it developed a crack that turned into a 3” by 2” chunk out of it! My brother, a Welder, took it to work and had a machinist turn it on a lathe. The end result was a 17and 3/4” ride that sounded amazing!!
I always got compliments on how it sounded, and offers to buy it! It sounded kind of like an AAX metal ride but much better! It was one of a kind!
nice! what a cool story
Josef, I cannot thank you enough for this instructional video. I've watched a few homemade lathe videos, but this is the easiest and safest way to repair cymbals. THANK YOU!!! VERY INGENIOUS!!
thank you!
but as i stated in the description: this is no instructional video, just entertainment ;) (bc it's still pretty dangerous)
@@josefschwengdrums7990, sorry about that. You're right, I can see the danger aspect of this. Still an excellent video, and superior technique. Lathes can be very dangerous too. Thanks again for sharing!!
@@CBRansom35 You are right tho, some of the DIY lathe set ups I've seen while researching options to cut cymbals looked pretty sketchy to me. I'm glad my idea helped you. Drum on!
Want to turn a cracked 18" paiste crash into a 14" hi hat top. You just showed me how! Brilliant video
thanks so much!
My brother cracked my 16" 2002 crash and I cut it down to 12", drilled a nice pattern of holes and now it's part of a 12"/10" stack👍🏻
That bell is the best of them all
thanks!
cool that you like it!
haha, did it look like I used CGI on this million dollar production? ;)
but for real, i like that you did it!
Holy shit. Just gave my old cracked cymbals a whole new purpose. Thanks for the vid. This beats drilling holes to stop cracks
absolutely. i find that holes don't work, really.
the cable ties scene is really smart 😂. instead of buying longer one you cut a bit the wood. i admire your idea
Man, you literally answered the question I asked the internet)I hope now the cymbals still serve you) even the cymbals set on the trim is about the same. Thanks a lot and may the groove be with you)
Hey man, thank you. I still use the cymbals and they didn't break more! Glad i could help.
Great mods! I love cutting up old cymbals. Though usually I deburr the edges with a Dremel and the carbon steel brush tip :)
Nice, i don#t have one, so i just used a file
I knew there was a reason I've saved years worth of cracked cymbals...this is gold..and I have a shop ready to do the magic..THANKS!!! Wa-hooo!
nice! tell me how it worked... also check out my new video with ideas on what else to do with them :)
Really excellent technique/application. I never thought to do it like that.
holy smokes! i watched some of your vids when i was researching cymbal mods and now this comment! thanks man, great work on your side, too.
I think you should also scratch the surface of the cymbal. The reduced thickness would produce a sound more suited to the smaller diameter. If you do, please register it in a new video and let us know!
thanks for the comment! I did that with a file on the small bell later on, but didnt film it. maybe i will make a video about that in the future...
I took a friends cracked cymbals to work and plasma cut the edge off with a circle cutting attachment.
Cleaned up the edge with a flap disc. Works a treat.
good job! did you give it back to him afterwards? :D
@@josefschwengdrums7990 yes sir. Did three cymbals .
Also had an engineer from work shoot the cymbals with a device that analyses material content.
It's good to see the amount of copper and tin and other ingredients in cymbals.
@@Customwinder1 so you know the exact cymbal recipe?
@@jayvalle50 I know the percentage of materials going into the cymbals.
And found out some of the secret ingredients 👍
@@Customwinder1 thats freaking wicked😎🤘
Lol. Back in my drumming years I never tossed away broken cymbals. I found and or made use by either making them worse or reshaping them just messing around. The hard part was placement of the odd shape. Lol
Dang, yo. The baby bell is actually great.
thanks so much!
that way you attack the dishes there is no dish on this planet that will not break, attack the dishes by whipping, scraping sideways.no attack from the front and straight as you do at the beginning of the video, this will only generate a new crack, it is a question of time, I leave this tip for all drummers, I have been teaching drums for over 27 years. embrace of the Eddrums Brasil drum institute.
i know, i know. but it's fun that way on stage :)
Congratulations you have a load of splash cymbals now haha
kinda true ;)
I just got an angle grinder, specifically for this purpose. But I’m going to cut mine straight across, cut the segment that includes the cracks. Cut it past the visible crack line. Hypothesis being that the weight of the other side will pull it down, toward the striking area. This should preserve much of the sound character, and allow the cymbal to be played a few more years before getting the circular cut-down.
tell me if it works, i would really love to know!
(i would suspect it would lose a lot of sustain, because there is a reason for the circular shape of most cymbals...)
It's great when you don't have to reduce the diameter too much. In most cases I try to just cut a wide U shape and use more drastic solutions when I'm not satisfied with the more conservative way
i get that. but most times i find the Us shaped cuts tend to dampen the cymbal too much for my taste
Just discovered this video now. Really amazed by the creative and manufacturing process!
Question though, what about the rings that you cut? Did you throw them away like regular garbage, or is there a brand of cymbal which can collect them and maybe recycle them into new cymbals?
I kept them and made stuff out of it. I got a new video, where i used some of it, go check it out! It's such a beatiful material, that i already made jewelry out of it for my gf. she loves it.
also you can sell it to a recycling facility, it's 80% copper!
@@josefschwengdrums7990 I'll check it out thanks.
And thanks for the tip about recycling the cymbals!
great job. i'm gonna reduce a 20' ride to 18' using your "method". the bell sounds cool ! rock on !!!
thx man, good luck with that 20"
So,
The idea is actually pretty genius. Use acetone to remove the labels, because it’ll look better, and make sure those edges are de burred. And good to go. Might try this when I get some broke cymbals. Just got back into drumming last year, after a hiatus and selling off all the gear. Good to see what you can do with a little imagination.
thanks! good thing you started playing again.
Dude, congrats for the work!
Obs: the sound of the regular HiHats are better, but if you really want to use the cut-hat I think that the sound of the bottom is batter than the up set
thanks for the input! drum on
If you could make them thinner that probably sound way better. Cuz now they're the size of splashes and splashes are very thin. Cool trick.
yeah, i thought about that. i think i will try it with one and see how it works
Hi Josef. Just found your channel and I had to sub you. You are a genius. I absolutely loved your device for cutting down cymbals.....As you said, top sounded better to me too. The cut down to a bell cymbal upside down on the ride works too. Good job buddy!......ps, I would have liked a little ride out on your bike with you......next time please put 30sec's or so of your journey.
Wow, if you ask me THIS NICE, i probably will :) Thank you!
After all, it's a very nice bike.
Man, stack those 3 together! Should get a dope clap sound out of them
...invert the top one tho😏
someone else recommended that too. i will try it! didn't occur to me before
i'll try that too
Genious, man! Just absolutely genious! I did not know that could be done w old cymbals.
neither did I, i just tried it :)
I think I'm too late to make a comment haha, when you decrease the size of a cymbal it usually gets too thick and loses the curved shape, in which case you would have to re-hammer and lathe it.
there are several channels of cymbals smiths here on youtube, that would give you a superficial idea of what to do. I
personally recommend Bruno Schell channel, he recovers broken cymbals and transforms simple b8 in magnificent cymbals.
I never did this type of job, it is only knowledge that I have of what I have seen until today.
I'm gonna check it out. The cymbals could probably have profitted from a little lathe work, but that would be the topic of another vid.
At *FIRST* I thought those *INCHES* where *SPLEENS* for *AF1's*🙉
Well done 🍻
thanks so much!
Dude, I'm not sure what kind of crazy... Aerosmith 1971 cocaine / muppet babies "Animal style" drumming you got going down to bust your A's up like you have.....but hey, it does not matter!!!! You my man, are a genius!! As simple as it is....and it just never slapped me upside the head, to screw it down with a hinge. Take it easy on that brass homeboy and thanks for the video....so I can now handle this cutting of the brass like the Viking warlord I am.Later
i'm laughing my ass off here :D great comment! i guess i'm hitting pretty hard when i'm on stage with my thrash metal band. also the occasional singer might have dropped the occasional cymbal bag while on tour -.-
The Reso Ride looked like it was just lathed too thin where it cracked. That one was bound to happen sooned then later.
THANK YOU, finally! i said the same thing to the guy in the store but he refused to send it in (to be checked if that was the case)
I tried this a long time ago, it does not work the cut down cymbal needs lathing as it far too thick for it size towards the edge. stacks or hithat bottom is the only think I thing they work for.
How are you cracking the cymbal in between the nut and outside edge of the cymbal without cracking the outside edges?
That´s widely considered a flaw in the material. Cracks from the outside edge come from brute force, cracks in the middle can come from misbalanced cymbals, a flaw in the bronce or when one drops a cymbal and it gets a tiny dent on the edge (than its also not balanced any more).
I have a couple cracked ones. I am totally gonna do that! Thankyou!
go ahead, it's fun
I just appreciate the extra taps at 10:35
thx
I like all of them. Your smart dude. I also used a angle grinder to cut my 18inch z custom China it's now a 10.5 inch splash bell sounds kool.bbut your ideas of used a hinge and bolt to make like a lathe machine is engineering skill. Ima go make same out of mine. Hope you ok me steal idea . thanks you should be an engineer go rock kit you play solid beats too buddy. Happy drumming.
thank you so much. of course you can "steal" the idea, I put it out there for inspiration! :)
Helpful. safety glasses though.
At about 3:50 you can see them on the table and later on you can't, because I'm wearing them. I didnt know if this set up was going to blow up in my face, so ofc I put them on :) thx tho
Jossf, Nice innovative solution! Here’s my question, Because I think I’m going to do this. What type of cutting blade did you have on your grinder?
Hey man, i used a high quality abrasive disc made for cutting different metals and metal alloys like bronze, which is what most cymbals are made out off. One should use a NEW cutting disc, but any regular metal cutting disc should work fine.
Crisper sound after cleaning for sure.
if you call this "cleaning", you are hardcore :D
This is some rdavidr next level type shit
thank you so much. i love the guy
This is gold. Thank you!
you are really welcome
I never abused or beat my cymbals, I was in an accident and my cymbal bag along with others fell to the ground, 3of my cymbals had edge cracks, fairly small
you're ok tho, right?
I think when the cymbal cracks, you stop hitting on it until it spreads this bad.
Low cost , high , and best sounds....
thx
Sehr geile Idee! Ich habe da immer Uhren draus gebaut früher 😉.
haha, der klassiker. aber irgendwann hat man genug uhren ;)
gran trabajo, era lo que buscaba ! gracias
de nada!
Pro tip, stop side hammering the cymbals, change the nylon bushing to prevent key holes.......
thanks, they got mistreated badly on tour, but it's fine
Genio es el que inventó....
gracias!
Can someone help me. I have a 12” pair of zildjian new beat hi hats and I’m wanting to cut them down to 10”s. I was sort of curious if I used a grinder or something like this guy used, would the cymbals still sit together good. Like there wouldn’t be big ole gaps between the cymbals when placed together/on top of each other.
if you know how to work with high precission with an angle grinder, they will fit. but if you are not experienced, it might turn out bad. maybe ask a friend who has more experience. the metal must not get too hot or the cymbals might lose their tempering and that's bad.
Awsum idea I'm looking at getting a Sabian aa18 metal X crack is just on the 5th lathe line from the outer edge would I need to go in more than that?? Ideally I want it to be 17" any ideas???? 🥁🤘🥁🤘 Also looking at a pair of 14 Sabian fusion hats with 2 small cracks on top hat what's the best way to cut em down ?
on the 18" you should be fine, if you cut he cymbal just above the crack (check bottom too, to see where the crack is running), on the 14" hats i would probably do nothing, as most HiHats have a sizzly sound anyways. if the hats really sound bad, this method should still work on them too
Очень круто !!! Самое сложное теперь попасть по самой маленькой!)))
спасибо
The bonus bell
Excellent

Super Anleitung!

That was an interesting experiment, but these wouldn't work in my set.
Hi.i see.after doing the cutting. I want to had .all the old cymbals. To become useful tools.soon.
cool, do it
5 decade drummer here. I have never broken a cymbal. That's gotta be abuse right?
well, 5 decades of drumming say you are right! Nevertheless Ravi Shankar gave an interview, where he said that when he saw Jimi Hendrix abuse his guitar on stage it didn't feel good to him, because in his understanding a musicians instrument is in a way a holy thing. I understand both poits of view and never having decided what i think is right i try to be as antural on stage, as i can. so when i play a wedding band or a symphony orchestra, i am very aware of the way i play. but when i play with my metal band in some smokey music bar to 150 people banging their heads of, i let her rip :)
Hitting too hard,wrong angle
exactly!
Unless you play jazz, eventually your cymbals are going to break, even if you use the right technique, nothing lasts forever
@@minnesotaskinny5518 well, I don't play jazz, mostly rock and metal, and didn't break a cymbal for 20+ years. I only broke a couple when I was a begginer, back in the 90's. Tomorrow never knows, maybe I'll break another one, but so far so good. So I'd say that a proper technique and setting actually has way more to do with cymbal durability than the musical gender you play.
Hi hat too thick up top . . curious how that would sound if you made that upper hi hat about a little thinner across it's entire diameter especially by the bell, try to get a nice crisp sizzle out of that, I don't mind a heavy top hi hat but I just couldn't work with anything that low, resonates way too long.
I might have to find out for myself but I can't do it with an angle grinder, I don't feel like I'll ever be able to get it perfectly round and that has got to be a pretty important factor, whether in feel, reaction or sound or all
hmm, i dont know. if you have time, you could sand it by hand i guess
Old , and very large cymbals. Waiting for ......
...for what? :)
I was going to write my comment just after you tested the cut ones that the bell would be a nice addition stacked somewhere on your set up. Didnt really like the other two. Cool video though.
thanks! the bell has a lot of fans it seems...
Those 3 as a stack would have been kewl c:
I din't think of that! i will try it, thanks.
Genius man🔥
thank you !
Great, what about the cut offs they could be modified as drum rings.
Thats what i'm working at atm ;)
In the meantime i uploaded a new vid, where I use the cut offs to make a Ribbon Crasher: ruclips.net/video/ExN5RE-xdfI/видео.html
Who is the band @ about the 7:00 mark? Nice groove!
Not a real band, but royalty free music from the internet
The idea was good... the risult was bad!!!😖😖😖🤷♂️
I think for a proof of concept it's fine. also they sound better in reality, then over the 30$ cam mic ;)
Good video
thank you!
I’ve modified numerous cymbals that were basically trashed for 1 reason or another. Somebody loved a cymbal mod that I had Loved For several years, that they stole it. Hope you’re enjoying MY cymbal unless you’ve pawned it for whatever bad habits
that you love more than your own dark soul 🙄🙄
Hhat nice. Why didnt use those mic?
they were set up, but not connected to anything yet (preparations for a recording later that week)
I know that big bell ride
Don't use power tools. It distempers the metal and makes them brittle...i.e. won't last long.
if you go slow and cut them without colour changes in the material, you get pretty good results. no dampening (as the bell proves)
Awesome !
thank you!
Just Go for broke, lathe and hammer on em too, any gain from a broken cymbal is profit!
thats the spirit!
I would have liked to have heard the hi-hat fully opened up. Other than that, cool video
good input, thanks!
What size cutting disk did you use on the angle grinder?
a 125mm disc, which is the standart size, i think. It's a little worn, so maybe thats why it looks smaller
That was a lot of work to cut those. But better than pitching em.
Figuring out how to do it took waaaaay longer :D
This guy thinks he's Lance Campeau! 🤣
I wish! Lance commented on this video 3 years ago tho, i felt honoured :)
lol way to use the hatchet
I made a cranky bell with an 14' old crash,
Have you thought of making your new 14' as O-zone?
yes, i have. i will in the future, especially with the "doingy" little crash. thanks for the input, tho
Did you got a Zildjan cymbal in a Meinl bag?
I found it funny 😂
Derp
lol :D BLASPHEMY
Use a sheet metal sheer.
Thx, but I don't have one. I would assume there are more ppl with an angle grinder at home, than a sheet metal sheer strong enough to cut up to 3 millimeter thick bronze. That would need a bench sheer at least or Hulk like grip strengh :D
also the fact that the sheers basically only cut straight lines one might assume the clean up afterwards, to get the cymbal perfectly round again, would take more efford.
Good idea.
One better is to stop using Zildjians.
Sabians, Paistes and Meinl break less often, especially Sabians.
would be interesting to set up a laboratory test with a machine hitting 10.000 times on each one...
@@josefschwengdrums7990 Dont trust me on this but Ive heard in Zildjian tours that they do have one, although Ive never heard of the results theyve had.

Hey Josef, I didn't see a way on your channel to personally message you, but I was wondering if you would be interested in cutting down a cymbal for me? 18" Zildjian A Custom Projection Crash to a 17.5" due to a crack. If so lemme know what you would charge. None of the machine shops in my area say they are set up to do this. Thanks!
Send it to me. I will do it for you.

anyways, i live in Germany so shipping would probably be more expensive then buying a new one.
Still sound like crap lol 😂
lol
Rick Delair I only have 2002 and Zildjians!! Both brands are over 60yrs old. I can’t stand the tone of the others!
Hahaha, some other dude wrote the same thing. I like the 2002, we use one in an orchestra i teach and when i grow up and can buy all the cymbals i want, those will be part of it. right now i see a lot of small cymbal smithys in turkey coming strong and handforged cymbals sound best to me right now. maybe my next one will be from some tiny brand.
How on Earth did you break those cymbals? You hit so light.
It was a 3 week tour through europe with 2 bands and the whole backline including cainets and drums stuffed in a VW. To get in or out we had to climb over all the stuff. The cymbals were in a softcase for logistical reasons and got dropped, kicked, stepped on and such. A cymbal with a dent will break way faster, so...
@@josefschwengdrums7990 Ah, yes. Great playing btw!!
Ehmm the bell... But the test sounds do crappy
i invested in microphones since then. we'll see how the next one sounds :)
Great but save tose drumming hand. Wear some Gloves ALWAYS with a grinder
true. but i've seen ppl getting their gloves or sleeves stuck in rotating tools, so i take the risk for myself. i recommend wearing protective gear all the time tho.
Yeah till the glove gets caught and tears your hand off.
Never wear gloves with rotating machinery ,NEVER!!!!
What exactly makes a cymbal crappy ? 🤔
i would say a cymbal is crappy when it sounds so crappy, that it makes the whole drumset sound bad. like instead of rounding the kit up soundwise it makes you cringe every time it's played...
Hey great video, perhaps you can advise me. I have some Paiste Signature hihats that lve had for years. The top is now keyhole but still sounds great. I want to turn the bottom hat into something like a quick beat bottom hat with the four air holes to let out the air quicker. How would you go about this.....? Many thanks in anticipation. Best wishes Steve T, UK drummer....
sorry for the late answer, but here you go: i would use a hole cutting saw on a drillpress. but measure EXTREMELY exact as to not throw it off. @rdavidr has some videos on that: ruclips.net/user/rdavidr
if you are not shure you can pull off a perfect hole, ask a friend or someone who has a drillpress and knows how to jig the cymbal up.
Rick Delair, are you on a quest? :D
thats actually a good answer.
eso es por que sos un caballo tocando !!! tiralos a la basura !!! que queres inventar ? jajaja
