    In this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, I will show you how to eat passion fruit. I will also let you know what passion fruit tastes like. Passion fruit is a fantastic fruit native to Brazil through Paraguay and northern parts of Argentina, however, they are cultivated and grown all over the world in tropical and subtropical areas. Fun fact for you, passion fruit grows well here in the Phoenix area of Arizona! Pretty awesome right?
    How do you eat passion fruit? Well, you simply just cut it in half and scoop out the inside. Easy as that.
    What does a passion fruit taste like? Depending on the variety and when you pick it, it can be slightly sour or really sweet. The ones I get at the store tend to be on the more sour side. The ones off my friend's plant are on the sweeter side. Then they have these little seeds that are crunchy but they are encased in the jelly-like material which is what you want to eat or juice. The seeds are easy to eat so I just chomp on them. Or you can just juice the passion fruit and put them in a smoothie.
    Passion fruit are quite healthy and pack lots of vitamins and minerals in the low-calorie fruit. They are high in fiber as well.

    They are absolutely delicious. $2.50 a piece is so expensive, though. I live in the Netherlands, and at my local supermarket you can get six for just Є3. That's just $3.50 in USD! What makes it even more surprising is that you can actually grow them in Arizona, and there's no way you'd be able to grow them in this country without a greenhouse. I think you've got a great opportunity to corner the passion fruit market in Arizona. ;P

    • @inthekitchenwithmatt
      @inthekitchenwithmatt  2 года назад +8

      Yes, so expensive! I don't even bother buying them at the store. I took some clippings from that one I planted in my friends yard and planted it in my parents yard, haha. So now I have two yards with them. This past season I probably got 50 of them for free from my friends yard. I know right? If I had a big yard I would grow several of these and set up a little fruit stand and sell them, lol :)

We haven't tried them yet and I had no idea what they looked like inside so it's pretty cool to see your video. I was going to google passion fruit so I knew what to expect lol I can't wait to try them but I'm wondering if I should leave them out on the counter for a couple of days first. I put them right in my fridge when I got home from the store.

      @inthekitchenwithmatt  3 года назад +2

      Awesome! :) They may be a bit tart, it depends on when they were picked. Unfortunately they won't ripen a ton off of the vine. But the flavor should develop a bit more. Storing in the fridge and then allowing them to come to room temp for a day or two will be fine. :) Although you can eat them right out of the fridge too. Let me know your thoughts once you try them!

    In Ireland I bought 3 passion fruit for 40 cents. I don't chew the seeds nor spit them out I just swallow them. The seeds are tiny and easy to swallow, which makes it simple to eat them for me. It tastes somewhat like a sour, sherbet mango. The skin/shell halves when you are done with them remind me the green shell of a horse chestnut in the colour of a chestnut, without the prickles. I reckon they are probably better in a fresh juice blend, to add some flavour, than eating on their own.

And the taste will range from sweet to sour as well, all on the same vine. The Maracuja is type a passion fruit, meaning they belong to the same family, but they are two different fruits. :) Here is an interesting article: www.lsg-group.com/news/stories/global-food-myths-2-is-passion-fruit-and-maracuja-the-same-fruit/

    You say the one from your friends is sweet, but the one from supermarket is sour. That is my problem with basically all fruit from supermarket; big producers simply pick them too early and don't let the fruit mature enough; so fruit like berries ends up being sour, while others taste like grass. I bet many people, especially in big cities, grow up not liking fruit, because they never even had the chance to taste the real thing. I for example wonder how a fresh and ripe banana should really taste, because we know they pick them still completely green and they turn yellow in transport.

    • @inthekitchenwithmatt
      @inthekitchenwithmatt  2 года назад +2

      You are not wrong! If you can, try specialty markets and farmer's markets their fruit are usually fresher and tastier. But yes, the big supermarket chains, import from super far away and they have to buy them unripe for longer shelf life. Or just grow your own, haha. But that of course is not feasible for most people. Nothing like fresh ripe fruit right off the tree or vine. :)

    • @biloz2988
      @biloz2988 11 месяцев назад

      Matt, you sound so amateur. The fruits have to be picked before ripening bec by the time they get to the stores where people can buy them they will ripe. One should buy all fruits in different age so they can eat the ripe ones first then the next the ones that ripened and so forth. That way you never miss any ripe fruit or throw any. The trick is to know how to pick.
      Not every town and city has farmers market so to suggest going to one is not appropriate.
