I am from Tennessee and this is my idea of what a warrior is -
Years after these events LTC Howard was the commander of Special Troops Battalion HQ VII Corps in Stuttgart Germany. He was my Battalion CO and was respected by every man and woman in that unit. I got to know him a little and he was a truly amazing man.
Colonel Howard I served in the 173 Airborne,

I took my son and his 8th grade class to Arlington and read his citation to the class at his graveside. One of the most moving experiences I've ever had. Hero is a gross understatement when it comes to this man.

He was trooping the line at Kelly Barracks in 1986 during the deployment of the 1/16th IN to protect the facility after the F111 attacks on Libya. He was an amazing man, and at the time I was 18 years old and had no idea who was coaching me. He did point out that I did not have to bust out the window of the dependents house, because the window opened …amazing combat logic to an 18-year-old. Now I know exactly who he is and I’m a better man for learning such a simple lesson.

It wasn't just this action but his entire service in macv-sog running missions into laos. This was one hard charging warrior...

I served under Cpt. Howard in 1973 “C” Rangers 1/29 at Ft. Benning, Ga. Shortly after he he left to start the new Ranger Bn. Change of command took place from Cpt.Petri to Cpt.Howard about later part of 73 or 74.
This was a bright light mission just into laos to rescue the guys from operation nightcap
The Other Half of the MOH is Command and Leadership. People ask "Why did MacArthur get a MOH?,... it was a sop to his personal withdrawal from Corrrigedor" or some such folderol. Xerxes was the equivalent to a Corporal in his army. Yet he lead the Greatest Withdrawal in History; Leadership and Command Have just as Great a role in the MOH as Courage. That's the Characteristic this man had that won the day for his people.
