  • In this video I show you a detailed overview of the glass rear window aftermarket convertible top including some pros and cons of doing this upgrade.
This top was on the car when I purchased it and I didn't receive any documentation about the top but I'm 99% sure it is made by "Sierra Auto Tops and Seats" and is sold by numerous Auto Top companies. Below are links to the top and the fabric inner headliner that I believe to be the one in my Boxster in this video.

My 01S has the additional fabric piece on the inside which I believe was standard on the S models. I am the original owner and the car has just over 70k miles. I originally intended to buy a 996, but after test driving both, it was an easy decision due to the much better handling characteristics of the mid-engine design. I live in Colorado and have taken many trips in it from El Paso to Banff, and all of the western states including the Pacific Coast highway. Our longest trip was for three weeks and was easy to do given the ample luggage space these little cars have. I’m enjoying your videos!

Oh interesting, I didn’t realize the additional fabric came with any of the Boxsters as standard. Good to know!
Yes I agree on roadtrips in these cars. Super comfortable in my opinion.
Thanks for the kind words also! Glad these videos are enjoyable to watch. 😎

My 986 was purchased just for driving the mountain roads from Montana down to southern Colorado. Worth every penny and headache!

I upgraded to the same after market glass window you have but in hindsight I should have paid the extra and gone with Porsche OEM from 2003/2004 instead.
The Porsche one has a much bigger glass window plus the fourth frame for more compactness in a variety of colour choices that imo is worth the extra money.

I wasn’t ever sure if the 2003/2004 Porsche OEM with the new frame could be put on the 1997-2002 models. I had loosely heard it could be but never really read/found an official answer. Are you saying that it definitely CAN be put on the 1997-2002 models? That would be great question to finally have an answer to. 🙂

If @kevinsboxster2310 can see this, I accidentally deleted your comment while trying to reply. If you could re-post that would be great! In case he doesn’t see this, what he said was that he put a 2004 OEM convertible top on his 2000 so it sounds like it’s compatible. What I was wondering is if it needed the newer convertible top frame or if it fit on the original frame from the 2000?

My glass rear window makes it very hard to access the engine from the top. It doesn't "fold" out of the way.

Yes indeed that is the biggest downside to the glass window option😕

@@Boxster986Fan It still isn't my real obstacle to getting the old AOS out. The middle hose connected is just too difficult to remove with a sprained wrist!

Yeah I’m not looking forward to the time when I need to replace my AOS. I know it’ll come soon. Be sure to order this clamp as it makes the job 10x easier when reattaching the lower hose:

@@Boxster986Fan When it does come time to change your AOS, take note that the base is offset a little from the vertical "tower" of the AOS. The AOS wont push into the engine at the nozzle if you are holding it vertically. Only took me three days to figure that one out. Went right in and install completed in 20 minutes once I figured out what I was wrong.

I have the original vinyl window and very annoying getting out and doing the karate chop to fold vinyl in correct place to avoid splitting. Have been wanting to upgrade to glass window, Are there any issues with folding down?

    • @Boxster986Fan

Window folds perfectly without any need to get out. Some people are bothered by the smaller window but I guess since I’ve only had the smaller one I’m used to it and it doesn’t bother me.
As shown in the video the biggest thing to be aware of is the much smaller opening when accessing the top engine compartment. That can be a deal breaker for a lot of people. If say money wasn’t a problem, you could do some research to see if it’s possible to put the newer frame with the Porsche OEM glass window top on your car. I believe that’s the only way to get glass and a window that allows full opening access to the engine.
