    Awesome video, I missed the days when I was in Western Sichuan years ago searching for these holy grail of orchids in the wild.

      +biozcw It is an incredible place to visit. Finding C. farreri in the wild was the peak of the trip for me. When did you visit SIchuan BTW?

    Love seeing these. I spent my life developing media for Paphiopedilum and Phragmipedium in vitro. Hopefully these never disappear. Love you videos

    Wonderful to see these orchids growing well in situ and we have learned to preserve their natural habitats while commercially reproducing them in the labs and not stripping them off their natural habitats.

      Thankfully there exists a lot of habitat for many Cypripedium in western China, and I suspect even today populations exist in such far flung areas that they are scarcely known about by humans. May they stay that way.

    Awesome video! Thank you for sharing. So sad to hear the loss of Holger😢

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  7 лет назад

      Yes, the loss of Holger was sudden and tragic. Wenqing is still doing the business, so she will be offering Cypripediums and lots of other orchids, especially Paphiopedilums, for sale. She also will continue with the botanical tours of China (which are amazing), and she will be going to shows and speaking around the world as well. Let's all wish her the best of luck!

    It is with great sadness that I have to report that Holger Perner died last month in his adopted home, Chengdu. The loss to his family is of course devastating. The loss to the orchid world and the people's lives he touched throughout the world is also devastating. The efforts of Holger and his wife Wenqing to bring Chinese plants (in particular orchids) to the attention of humanity was unselfish and idealistic - nobody "get's rich" doing this kind of work. In the end their tours and tireless travels around the world lead to his early death.
    He leaves behind not only Wenqing, but two daughters, Isabell and Stefanie. The responsibility of their large nursery operations (they have 15 employees and a large greenhouse complex), the extensive tour schedule, and also the girl's welfare and education now firmly falls on Wenqing's shoulders. In the face of this reality, Wenqing has decided to continue on with their business, but of course the path will not be an easy one. For that reason, they need all the support they can get.
    In the US, their good friend Mary Gerritsen has decided to help by receiving funds that will be direct deposited in Wenqing's account. These will be mostly used to fund Isabell's and Stefanie's education. Here's the information if you are interesting in helping out:
    USA residents can mail their checks, payable to Wenqing Perner to:
    MARY GERRITSEN
    541 Parrott Drive
    San Mateo, CA 94402
    100% of the proceeds will be deposited to Wenqing’s US bank account.
    Outside of the USA, please visit the following link to help out. YouCaring donates 100% of the proceeds to the recipients, but there also is a optional donor fee. These funds will be sent via PayPal directly to Wenqing.

      It was a fantastic nursery to see in person, as were the thousands we saw in the wild. Seeing fields of them in flower all at once is a breathtaking experience. I'm glad I had the chance!

    They are so gorgeous! I hope those mountains aren't that accessible so the orchids and other rare plants still grow and not be destroyed be the consumer society.

      Artificially produced Cypripediums are not cheap, that is true. They can be bought from various vendors in the EU, the USA and Canada, and also Hengduan Biotech in China. Please avoid cheap plants you see on the internet. They most certainly are wild collected, and even if you try growing them they will almost always end up dying. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    are any of those orchid being sold in the U.S.A and where can I find them?

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  8 лет назад +1

      +ohmitered408 Chinese Cypripediums are a bit rare in the states. Check out this article I wrote about American sources: botanyboy.org/where-to-buy-lady-slipper-orchids-online-north-american-sources/ The Perners visit America on a regular basis however, so if you preorder from them, they can bring plants into the US for you. Check out this article about their nursery and contact information: botanyboy.org/hengduan-mountains-biotechnology-a-china-based-orchid-plant-nursery/

      +botanyboy1 thanks for the info and the help. Also I check out Hengduan mountain biotechnology and saw they are doing orchid tissue culture. I remember that you don't need Phytosanitary certificates for international sterile tissue culture orders in the states if I remember right?
