I grew up going to Vortex Springs and still go frequently, so this story is very near and dear to me. It's an incredibly small operation in the middle of the woods, without much within 20 miles. It's a natural COLD spring. It's miles away from any beach and the pools are very small (they're deep, but the width of the two pools are small). The water is typically very clear and you can stand on shore and watch the divers dive to the entrance of the cave when it's clearest. As a matter of fact, you can actually free dive, without oxygen, to the entrance of the cave with some intermediate experience. The park closes to INCOMING traffic at 5PM, however there are cabins and on-site camping available on the grounds and there is a large lack of life guards or safety measures around the pools for those that are diving deeper below the surface. As a native to the area, I personally believe that their small staff were able to find his remains and the owner somehow covered it up to avoid prosecution for negligence, as there have been dozens of divers that have died in these same caves. Excellent coverage of this story, Georgia! You certainly did his story justice.
Cara Nicole that’s what I thought! They must have found him and covered it up. If it’s a frequently populated place even touristy, they wouldn’t want more bad press after so many prior deaths!
I visited vortex springs in 2016 for a music festival and loved the grounds. It was so beautiful! I’m in shock that this video turned out to be in this location.
Vortex Springs is not too far away from where we live. There’s actually 3 springs in the area (Vortex, Morrison Springs and Ponce De Léon Springs). Vortex is amazing and the entry fee is very reasonable. There is tons of stuff to do there.
Honestly, kudos to people who are brave enough to do things like that. Even THINKING of being deep underwater in a cave gives me a mini panic attack 🤢🤮
Gosh, what a tragic series of events for that family, losing two sons. However I can't believe that they were offering money for people to go diving for his body against the advice of highly trained professionals, especially knowing that this was possibly the way their son had died. $30,000 is a staggering amount of money, and I'm sure that it must've occurred to them that people would attempt it out of desperation. Just a real tragedy.
I'm with the. "Guy has an accident and they removed his body to avoid the business hit" theory, especially with them having opened the gate for him..ect,ect.
This is so insane, I was taught you ALWAYS dive with a partner. Even experienced divers have to dive in pairs, just for safety reasons, so I find it strange that they even let him dive on his own. Very sad overall.
Cave diving is absolutely insane it’s so dangerous, what they managed to do in Thailand and save the lives of all the kids and the coach was near enough incredible x
Right?.. but every time I think of the Thailand cave situation I can't help but feel sad about that diver who lost his life in the rescue efforts. He was an amazing man. :( Such a risky profession. Takes some brave, brave humans
Thank you for covering this Georgia, it's such an interesting case. I find these kind of caves terrifying! My friend had an accident diving, so so scary.
I spent the whole video convinced that it was some kind of accident. I've been diving for a fair few years and I still consider myself a helpless amateur. Things can go wrong so easily and like Georgia said, if you've not practiced the procedures to deal with them till they're instinct, you're in real trouble. Also, always, and I mean always, dive with a buddy. No buddy, no dive. Once when my BCD (buoyancy control) malfunctioned I started shooting to the surface as it wasn't letting the air out. The closer to the surface I got, the more the air in my jacket expanded, pulling me up faster. Luckily my buddy was there to slow my ascent enough that I wasn't injured but it could have ended in disaster for me. Diving can be amazing and so fun if you take the time to learn and follow the protocols put in place for you, the fact that he had such a lax approach to this sport is really alarming. I genuinely think he died due to some complication on the dive. The abandoned air tanks could point to something to do with an emergency exit, maybe ditching as much extra weight as he could before making an emergency ascent back to the surface once out of the cave. That could explain why his extra tanks were found spread through the cave system. Maybe he even made it out of the water before succumbing to whatever caused the emergency exit and was found the next day by the owner. I don't know... just his clear inexperience worries me, even with how many dives he'd wracked up
I live about an hour from Vortex and have gone there every summer for the past few years! Everyone around here goes to drink and have a good time, and not many people actually know a man went down and never came up.It’s eerie knowing this area personally and hearing you speak on it, but love hearing you cover international cases! 💓
Synox Games there would only be decomposition in the water if his body decomposed IN the water. If it was moved soon after death, it wouldn’t have time to decompose in the water. Just my two cents :)

I don't know if it is possible that he emerged too fast and probably suffered some kind of a stroke and died, then this other guy comes in and fearing a police encounter removes the body and hides it in the woods.

I love ask a mortician! That was my first thought when you brought cave diving. The idea of being trapped in a watery cave is the thing of my nightmares.
There is a case in South Africa. It is about a young man called Henri van Breda who killed his family, but a lot of people did not believe he did it. He was recently sentenced to life in prison. This case is quite interesting, because his sister survived but she couldn't remember what happened. Henri told the police that it was intruders, but a lot of people also believe he had a manic episode because of drugs.
I'm so early wow, this was another interesting case, I'm a new subscriber and I LOVE your videos. Been binging them for 2 weeks now and finally decided to subscribe! Thanks for all your great content and sharing these cases with us.
Wow, what a heartbreaking case. My heart goes out to his spirit and loved ones. Ive done quite a bit of research on this case and I have a theory as to what happened. I remember reading an article on his disappearance, and it said that the night he went missing, as he was beginning his dive and descending down, he was passed by two employees who usually went diving after they closed for the day, who also knew him to be a regular at vortex. It was reported that one of them had apparently grown suspicious of him forcing the gate open, so he instead went and opened it for him, because he feared for his safety in him trying to forcibly enter on his own. While reading the article I was talking about earlier, something stuck out to me, like I said before, the 2 employees usually went diving after closing time, Apparently, they would usually wait after they were done to ensure Ben made it back safely as well. However, that night in particular, they said they didn’t stay and instead went to one of their homes to drink coffee. Idk why but this stood out to me as very weird. I think they did wait for him per usual, except this time he didn’t resurface. Fearing repercussions since they granted him access passed the gate although he wasn’t properly certified, they went to retrieve the body that night to dispose of it.
Great job on this Georgia! I always love your videos because of how comprehensive and well planned out they are. I also love to watch them because you give off a vibe of tranquillity - there's no rush in your voice! We can really tell the hard work you're putting in these cases! Lots of love from Greece :)
Why would ANYONE in his situation run away? He had parents that were willing to bankroll his life until he got back on track emotionally and even gave him the keys to their beach house where his only job was diving to his heart’s content-like, what?! Who would run away from a cushy set up like that??? I guess I could see him faking his own (accidental) death to then go and commit suicide (somewhere else) so that he could spare his parents from that kind of pain after losing their first son, but even that’s a long shot. The murder theory feels off to me too. Why would the owner kill his golden goose? And then leave the guy’s van, money etc still parked in the lot? Naw... I think he got too cocky going in those caves, something went wrong and he’s still in the caves stuck under some rocks or debris or he drifted out with a current. Sad either way tho. I feel really bad for his parents.
If the young man was clinically depressed all the money in the world or even emotionally support would have made any difference. If he was determined to commit suicide he would have succeeded no matter what. I think this young man didn't want to be found so he made it looked like he was going into the depths of the cave to keep the search focused there. He probably wanted to ensure that his death wouldn't be discovered.
would you ever want to do a livestream on here where people asked questions/you just talked about your favorite cases/ etc? you could have a friend on too if that makes it less anxiety inducing!! like maybe for a 100k celebration or something like that
While you were talking, I thought of that one Ask a Mortician video I saw, so I went over to her to look for it- and five minutes later, you recommend that very video!
I love your channel, because you always do cases myself & my family have never seen before. ♥️ Can't wait for the next one. Hope you have a great week.
From a medical standpoint that is ALOT of diving in such a short amount of time. It would be interesting to see what the impact of that sort of activity would have had on his brain chemistry...
Please cover the Kim Wall murder case. She was a Swedish journalist who interviewed a man on his submarine in Copenhagen in 2017. The case absolutely shocked us here in DK, as murders are virtually unheard of here. I believe he has just been sentenced, but his story has changed a few times so I think you would find it interesting to cover.
Well-made video as usual! Deep water scares the heck out of me, as do tight spaces, so this case was more unsettling than usual to hear about. I agree that murder seems the only plausible possibility, though I do not think we will ever found out what really happened that night.
I’ve been interested in this case for awhile, so it’s nice to hear some new information. As one with mental health problems I’m starting to wonder if Ben was in a manic state the last few weeks before the disappearance. That would explain why his dive log kept getting sloppier as well as his seeming obsession with diving and taking risks. Great video!
The amount of research this video reflects is astounding. Thank you for making it simple for us to understand the technicality of cave diving. I really appreciate all the hardwork Georgia ❤️ RIP Ben, absolute tragedy to the family.
Maybe I should look into this case because I have so many questions like what were his certifications? Was he a certified solo diver? Was he a tec diver? Was he taking a cave diving course or was it all self taught? How long and at what depth would he dive? Because if he did three long deep dives that day he might have had a decompression accident. Was he prone to narcosis? I’ve been working in a dive shop for over three years now and I’ve met so many reckless divers. Some of the customers I’ve had died while diving or had accident. Not only are they putting themselves in danger but also, they are usually the ones having accident and giving scuba diving a bad reputation. People think diving is dangerous but it is such a wonderful activity as long as you are careful and respect you certification’s limits.
pretty popular case so it might already be on your list but I think the Lars Mittank disappearance is very interesting and might be a good one to cover! thanks for all the work you put into these cases Georgia you do a really really wonderful job
Is it just me that think it was really reckless for the two men to unlock the gate for Ben? He wasn't certified and Ben wouldn't be able to lock the gate when he would be coming back out, so other people without certification could go in and out as they pleased.
It was a little bit reckless in hindsight, BUT Eduardo thought he was doing the right thing at the time. He knew that Ben had been tampering with the gate and was going to get past it regardless, so he thought he would save him 5-6 minutes of precious air time and just open it for him.
I got my diving licence (the basic and junior open water) when I was ten I understand what you mean when divers get spooked when I was on one on my first dives and saw one of the most poisonous fish in the world however this did not scare me but sometimes the smallest thing can scare you like something in a mask and suddenly you realise that you are using your air and need to calm down and concentrate on your breathing. You need to be 18 to cave dive and only 10 to dive this shows how dangerous this is
So about the police searching for signs of decay in the water- how would that differentiate between humans and fish? What if he did actually decay, and the results were misread? And I know the cave only has small fish/eels but is there a possibility scavengers ate his body and other people picked up his stuff/it got lost under soot? So many questions in this case. But thanks for covering it! I’ve never heard anything like it before
I've been diving myself in springs in Florida. I see NO way he could still be down there. I think you are right that he was murdered. I just hope his family finds closure and he is located one day. If he is just out there then that would be a horrible thing to do to his family.
Hey, I remember reading that you have horses and I was wondering if you could do a video on them. I have 2 horses and I would just be interested in seeing yours 🐴 Great video btw, I love watching your videos and they are really interesting. Thank you for doing them.
I don't want to suggest that he did kill himself or run away, BUT if you were depressed and wanted go, staging an accident would be a way to lessen the pain for your loved ones...
This was so good, I’ve gotta look up the case! It’s extra ‘unsolved’, there’s not even one theory that everyone is pretty sure is true. I wanna knoooow! Also I love ask a mortician too! 😁
Hey Georgia! Could you cover the Charlene Downes case? She went missing in Blackpool in 2003 and has never been found - there's a few interesting theories but what made me suggest it was that her mother has recently been interviewed about how the McCanns have been approved another £150,000 for Maddie's search, but Charlene's case has been swept under the carpet! A worthy case to bring some attention to :)
The cave looks and sounds super interesting but also scary even tho i love water. Isnt it super dark in these caves? The poor family had to go through a lot :(
Diving Into the Unknown is a Netflix documentary about a group of friends that cave dive together. 2 or 3 men actually die in a cave and the rest of the friends go down to retrieve the bodies because police deemed it too unsafe to do it themselves. It's really good!
Hi Georgia. Would you please consider covering August Reiger's missing persons case? I have suggested it to other true crime youtubers and have yet to see anyone cover it.
Omg, I didn't know I could adore you more...then you said the magic words... Ask a Mortician...lol...love her, love you, great video, you did amazing.. Its a sad case.
I wonder. Maybe the two employees saw Ben tampering with the gate while they were exiting the caves, meaning he used half a tank of air. Maybe they felt sorry for him based on his bad luck in life, and wanted to allow him into the caves for a good time. So he changes his air tank and explores the caves, and the two employees go about their night. At some point they go back to work and realize that somethings must have gone wrong because his vehicle hadn't budged an inch since the night prior. They find and remove his body to avoid negative press and essentially cover it up.
I *love* Ask a Mortician!! Caitlin is wonderful. I just started listening to her podcast 'Death in the Afternoon', and bought both of her books. Just finished 'From Here to Eternity' and will be reading 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes' next! I have a dedicated playlist just for her. 😊 Proud to be a deathling! 💀
Honestly most plausible theory imo? Ben went for the dive and got stuck/panicked/etc, drowned, and the owner/workers knew that he went down past the gate without certification because one of the workers let him down there, they dived down to find him and they hid the body to avoid a negligence suit and losing the business considering they’ve faced so much death from the place that it almost got shut down already previously. The owner certainly seems sketchy enough to pull a stunt like that. I feel like Eduardo telling authorities that he saw Ben diving and unlocked the gate for him was initially a huge blunder on his part because I’m sure he either knows/has an idea of what truly happened, and I think the dive park just went along with it and turned it into a narrative of Ben going down there and drowning and they just don’t know what happened to his body and they’d just run along with he’s in the cave somewhere and profit off the divers coming in attracted by the story or the reward for his body. I also find it hard to believe that Ben survived and resurfaced without 1. Using more oxygen if he was truly trying to get to the fourth restriction 2. If he did live and exit the lake at some point, why leave the oxygen tanks? Especially ones that aren’t used. Crazy stuff.
Knowing who owned this I would not be surprised at all if his body was removed and was dumped into the Gulf of Mexico. Lowell was part of a Very prominent family with lots of money. He inherited millions. But was known as a loose cannon. Or should I say crazy. Something very questionable happened a long time ago so most people have forgotten. Someone was “allegedly”brought out on a fishing boat and never came back. This man married shortly thereafter. The woman in this second marriage became Lowells grandmother. His grandmother has now passed away and is looked upon as almost a saint. She was not. She was actually a very tough woman who did a lot of unethical things. But she donated a lot of money to the “arts” towards the end of her life. I’ve always felt she did that to clean up her image. And it’s worked. Lowell died during a barbecue at Vortex Springs. He fell down the stairs and sustained a head injury.

From a medical standpoint that is ALOT of diving in such a short amount of time. It would be interesting to see what the impact of that sort of activity would have had on his brain chemistry...
Awe yay I just ordered 2 true crime pins! One for my car and one for my bag. Love it!
thank you so much!!
i’m fascinated by this case, and i think you did an great job covering it
Listening to Georgia at work!!! Its a good day🤩😍🤩😍🤩
hell yeah ive never been more excited for a video
Woooo she’s back at it again🔥
Subbie from Florida here! 🙋🏻♀️
Currently driving home from work listening to your video! 💖
Great case Georgia ; ] ps I heard that ben had wrote in his diary that ben got right near to the end of the cave before.
Oh yeah I remember that
Jasmin Mai people get murdered all the time in Sweden don’t act like no one gets murdered
Thanks for the upload! I’m totally lazy today... thank you for giving me something new to watch, lol.
Another great video, really interesting! Thanks for covering a case that’s not that well known x
Poor guy... Hes probably down there somewhere. Great job as always!
I need to stop watching these when I'm home alone 😅 ANOTHER great video thank you :) x
Tasting decomposition 🤮
Testing
My favourite part of the week!! 💜
Just ordered all three pins!!! I’m soooooo happy!!
This one was so different, loved it!
I have never heard of this case. Thanks for covering it. Could you cover the case of Sam Sayers missing from US on a hike.
Very interesting. Thank you for covering this case!!!
pretty popular case so it might already be on your list but I think the Lars Mittank disappearance is very interesting and might be a good one to cover! thanks for all the work you put into these cases Georgia you do a really really wonderful job
I have 2 horses and I would just be interested in seeing yours 🐴
Great video btw, I love watching your videos and they are really interesting. Thank you for doing them.
I don't want to suggest that he did kill himself or run away, BUT if you were depressed and wanted go, staging an accident would be a way to lessen the pain for your loved ones...
I've been to vortex many many times. Swimming over the basin gives me panic attacks. Can you cover JB Beasley from Dothan, AL.
This was so good, I’ve gotta look up the case! It’s extra ‘unsolved’, there’s not even one theory that everyone is pretty sure is true. I wanna knoooow! Also I love ask a mortician too! 😁
I love Caitlin's work so much!
Hi Georgia just got into your videos and love them, thank you.
Eduardo unlocked the gate for Ben... was it locked or unlocked the next day? I don’t understand
When you cover a case close to where I live 👏🏼👏🏼❤️
The cave looks and sounds super interesting but also scary even tho i love water. Isnt it super dark in these caves?
The poor family had to go through a lot :(
Diving Into the Unknown is a Netflix documentary about a group of friends that cave dive together. 2 or 3 men actually die in a cave and the rest of the friends go down to retrieve the bodies because police deemed it too unsafe to do it themselves. It's really good!
Great video !! Love ur videos
Right on time 💙
Dang I haven’t heard of this and I live in Florida!
Love your channel ❤️!
Ask A Mortician is AMAZING!! 👏🏼
I’ve been watching your channel for probably nearly a year and I’ve just realized now you resemble the actress Joey King... a little haha
WonderLust google confirmed 😂😂⭐️
I believe she looks like Demi Moore when she was young. She's a beautiful young lady that's for sure.
i’ve lived in memphis my whole life and never heard of this.. granted it didn’t happen in memphis it’s still kinda weird i haven’t heard of it at all
Midweek mysteries make my Wednesdays! Also Ask a Mortician is the best!
Reminds me of yuri lipski who filmed his fatal dive....diving is so scary to me!
Very interesting case! Now I am going to watch Ben Vortex, I hope I can handle it...
i don’t know how i didn’t know about this case because it was close to where i am, but this was a very interesting case to me
wow! im still at min2 but thanks for covering this. when i found out about him i found zilch.
How do you always look so beautiful😩
Chloe I know, right
Wow this one just blew my mind!!
